Artificial grass - yes or no?

ChicagoBears · 01/05/2023 21:40

I have a substantial garden, some has porcelain tiles but it’s mostly loose stone which looks bare and is difficult to use so I was considering artificial grass.

I know there’s lots of grades of grass, I’d opt for the premium grade but wanted to garner opinion, what (if any) are the drawbacks of artificial grass? Will I love to regret it?

@Mademetoxic You said it served no purpose and as I explained (quite simply!) it served me a purpose as my little girl can go exploring in her garden. Would you prefer her to stay indoors as the garden was so unsafe for her? Talk a out selfish.

As I also explained, we have lots of plants in pots that attract bugs, bees etc. Again, as that doesn't suit you, obviously we are wrong.

Nobody is interested in 'shitlawns' - I'm just finding it laughable but you carry on. It's hilarious 🙂

Well loads of people are interested in shit lawns. Because they are shit.

You're laughable.

You twist things, people have said on this thread. Not just me.

99% of people on this thread have backed me up, but you continue to argue your case.
99% of people on this thread have said fake grass is awful for the environment, tacky, ugly.
Yet YOU think you're right and gloss over all this.

Educate your daughter on hedgehogs. They live in fields and in grass. (Real grass)
They're in decline.
Their population is down and by 2025 the way things are going they'll be extinct.

Shit artificial lawns fuck up their habitats.
Shit artificial lawns play a part in their decline.

Also it will put potential buyers off buying your home if you do ever want to sell up.

Just trying to think if there is anything uglier in the world than fake grass... no, can't think of anything .

@Mademetoxic Well unluckily for you, I won't be searching 'shitlawns' because guess what - I like mine! 🙂 because it's served a purpose that my little girl can now play outside (just repeating that so you don't conveniently forget!).

Again, people are entitled to their own opinions. Just because an overall amount have their opinion, doesn't mean the minority are wrong either in having their own opinion.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 05/05/2023 22:46

'Could' being the focus word.

Real life experiences tell me homes with artificial grass sell just as quick as those without. You carry on with your own agenda though.

Educate your daughter about hedgehogs. Your selfish reasons are a part to play in their decline.
By 2025 they will be extinct.

But ofc if you're happy, that is all that matters I guess.

It's not an opinion, they're facts. Everybody has backed me up on this.

@Mademetoxic 'Everybody has backed me up on this' - MOST people have agreed with you that fake grass is not good. SOME people have said they like it.

MOST and SOME suggest that it's not EVERYBODY as you say.

We do educate our daughter thanks. We also teach her that people are also entitled to their own opinions. Perhaps you need educating on that?

Kendodd · 05/05/2023 22:50

And yes, I would judge people with a fake grass lawn. What a horrible environment and example for your children. Just get a moss lawn instead or let your children play in mud, honestly, I would prefer my children got dirty in loads of mud that a toxic, shit, plastic fake grass carpet in the garden.

I think you're now a troll.

Have you told your daughter that your garden is a part to play in the decline of hedgehogs?

Have you told your daughter that wildlife habitats were destroyed to put your garden the way it is?

You think I'm a troll because I don't agree with you? Hilarious.

She is two. She is learning about animals. She likes to do gardening and she loves the insects we have in our garden, despite the fake grass.

By the time she is 8 hedgehogs will be no more.

Your selfish actions are a part to play in their decline.

Hedgehogs also die due to:
Getting killed on the road.
Open tin cans (they get stuck)
Slug pellets
Rat poison
Bonfires
The list goes on...

So if you've ever travelled by car or put rat poison down, you're also posing a risk to hedgehogs. Fact!

You're either some sort of troll who just likes the thrill or just very odd (hence the name in your username)

You're just not listening to a word anybody has said on this thread. (Not just me, everyone else) you twist things, you change subjects, you just don't listen.

I've not listened to you?

You've repeatedly told me it's toxic when I haven't disagreed.
You've said it serves no purpose and when I explained why, you still didn't listen.
I wasn't allowed to bring cars into it but you're allowed to bring hedgehogs into it.
You blame me for the decline of hedgehogs and when I suggested the above, I'm suddenly a troll.

@Mynewhome I agree but some people just need to realise life doesn't always go their way 🙂

Are you the poster who said that you had fake grass too? If so, how do you find it? 🙂

I'm in the process of putting mine down. I don't think there will be a problem though. I have done lots of research as I have dogs and had read about smells so I have done my subbase different to standard. And will be having a non latex backing . My sister has fake grass and she has never said it gets hot or anything like that.

We have a dog too and wash it down regularly, we've never noticed a smell 🙂 ours doesn't get hot either 🙂

PatAndMat · 06/05/2023 03:26

it Is bad for the soil and insects underneath. It restricts new food sources such as grass clippings, leaves etc from feeding the insects below. In so doing they feed the soil and keep it healthy. Insects feed our bird life, hedgehogs etc and so life goes on.

The soil underneath eventually turns arid.

In 2022 there was a call for people laying artificial grass to pay more council tax due to the damage it does. This was raised again recently in 2023. The Government are ‘ not doing anything at the moment’ but will be keeping everything under review.

Marchintospring · 06/05/2023 07:46

@OddsocksinmyDocs I think this is not about “opinions” though. The only good thing about artificial lawns is it keeps the installers in business. The amount of plastic you have given your daughters generation to deal with is obscene. It can’t be recycled and you’ll be lucky if it still looks “good” in 10 years.

I know you said the grass lawn flooded but then it makes no sense putting plastic down which doesn’t absorb water. Clearly it was a fixable issue with an improved sub structure.

Mynewhome · 06/05/2023 07:55

Where?

Even single type plastic ( which most lawns aren’t ) will need to be clean. Unlikely after being used outside. And then you have to find a facility. Which you won’t because it’s pretty much theoretically possible and not actually practical.
