Artificial grass - yes or no?

ChicagoBears · 01/05/2023 21:40

I have a substantial garden, some has porcelain tiles but it’s mostly loose stone which looks bare and is difficult to use so I was considering artificial grass.

I know there’s lots of grades of grass, I’d opt for the premium grade but wanted to garner opinion, what (if any) are the drawbacks of artificial grass? Will I love to regret it?

My comment was in return to the poster who suggested those with fake grass are getting defensive. Though it's those without it that are mainly being the defensive ones...

Wtf are you on about?

I love seeing wildlife thrive in my garden. It's a haven for wildlife.

It depends what's under the fake grass. Alm through this thread people have spoken about water sitting in top/dog pee/it being hot. None of this is the case

I didn't see anyone claiming water sat on top of fake grass. I saw plenty of people saying it adds to flooding issues, which it does, and I saw that most (all?) of the people defending the use of fake grass misunderstood what that meant.

For your benefit:

It's not that the specific patch where the artificial grass is laid gets flooded. It's that artificial grass doesn't absorb any moisture itself in the way that the roots, stems, and leaves of natural grass do. It's all just drains into the ground beneath, increasing the risk of flooding in the locality.

'Wtf are you on about?'

The types of comments I'm on about.

Wildlife thrives in my front garden where we have real grass. Wildlife thrives in the back garden with the plants and flowers I have in pots.

Thanks for your concern though.

There is no excuse for plastic fake grass. It should be banned. The sooner it is the better.

Tell me 10 ways how it benefits the environment and ecosystem around us? Oh yes. You can't. Because it's just plastic.

It's fake. It's tacky. It's cheap no matter how much is spent on it. Awful for the environment.

How are people that deluded to even not realise the effects it has on the environment in years to come is beyond me.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 04/05/2023 11:02

A lot of things should be banned but they aren't. A lot of things affect the planet but we still do them/use them.

You have your opinions and I have mine. I have mine for reasons I've listed above - not that people should have to justify their reasoning for doing so.

Have a lovely day 🙂

That is not the point of this thread.

What is the purpose of fake grass? Nothing.

Please tell me 10 positive ways that plastic grass can have on the environment?
You still have not answered that have you.

It will always look shit and there are always other alternatives out there than putting plastic down.

No matter what people say and try to justify themselves with, it's awful tacky, fake and horrendous for the environment and ecosystem around us.

Springbuds38 · 04/05/2023 11:12

I have it (to cover a concrete yard as we couldn’t afford the other options) and we also have a small dog so I’d say, because of the dog, it’s higher maintenance that real grass as we need to clean it at least once or twice a day and ensure it remains cool on hot days. I would totally have real grass if I could!

Goldbar · 04/05/2023 11:13

I agree that we should all drive less and use public transport more. Maybe it should be made illegal for households to own more than one car.

And given the environmental impact of having children, maybe it's time for a "One child" policy like China had (ignoring for a moment the ethical, libertarian and economic counter-arguments).

And maybe we should all go meat-free and consuming more than a certain amount of meat per week should be criminalised.

But none of these are the subject-matter of this thread. Artificial grass is.

The point of the thread wasn't about how it affects the environment either but here you are...🙂

How are people that thick to NOT realise that it is a fact and not an opinion.

That by ripping up and putting tacky fake shit plastic affects the ecosystem and environment that helps us to survive.

Good job we all don't think like you. 🙄

'That is not the point of this thread' but hang on a minute, that doesn't suit me so ill just carry on bleating about how rubbish something is for the environment, despite that not being the point of the thread either.

Good job we don't all think like you either 🙂

That was the OP. Apologies if you didn't read it first. Nothing on there states the OP wanted 10 reasons on how it affects the eco system. People have voiced their opinions on it - including myself and you - and that's what the OP asked for.

It's you who's resorting to implying people are 'thick as pigshit' which shows just how mature you are. Well done you 🙂

Thankfully, my friend's and I are very open with each other. 'I don't like that paint colour, it looks like 💩' and 'Don't get that sofa, it's very tacky'. It's your friends I feel sorry for if you're as judgemental as you are.

I'm glad you all have nice gardens though. Mine wasn't nice, hence the fake grass.

Hopefully that's clear enough 🙂

But again, it is not an opinion that fake grass is terrible for ecosystems and the environment.

If everybody decided to have fake grass for their own selfish reasons, the human race would die out.

How is that hard to understand.

It's not being judgmental. It's all facts about fake grass.

There is nothing good about the tacky stuff no matter how much people try to justify themselves over it.

I don’t think it is reasonable or ok to try to police a thread to answer only your own very specific interpretation of a question asked just because you don’t like the answers.

the op asked specifically “what are the draw backs of artificial grass” and all, things mentioned, from its environmentally damaging to someone thinking it looks like shit are all valid responses,as for them that’s a drawback.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 04/05/2023 12:12

But again, where in the OP was it asked about the environment element? It wasn't. Honestly, it's really not that hard to understand 🙂

You've made it very clear you hate fake grass. That is fine. Other people like it. That is also fine.

Again, it's not hard to understand 🙂

I don't think it's reasonable for other posters to be hypocrites either - saying my response 'isn't what was asked' when there reasoning wasn't what was asked either.

There's also no need for posters to imply people are 'thick' either but obviously that isn't unreasonable 🙃

She didn’t specify it was an open question. She said what is the draw backs of artificial grass. As such, environmental damage or it looks like shit are valid responses.

you are undertaking a very unusual argument. If you feel that people should not be able to put forward environmental concerns as a drawback of artificial grass, please message @mnhq. They will say if this is within guidelines. At that point. I suggest you abide by their decision and stop trying to police the thread and dictate the direction of responses allowed.

The OP also wanted opinions on people who have fake grass too. It works both ways.

Nobody said that environmental concerns shouldn't be spoken about. How strange you've come to that conclusion...

I also suggest you stop being a hypocrite too, policing how people should post. Hilarious.

Because it is people like you who need educating in this matter.
Who clearly has no idea about how detrimental it is.
That you just gloss over the fact.
Or that you just don't give a damn.

If everybody thought like you and put plastic in their gardens, the human race would die off.

If you weren't so rude 'people are as thick as pigshit', people may be more obliged to listen to you.

Now, this thread is about artificial grass. If you'd like to educate people, perhaps start your own thread 🙂

Are we not allowed to be concerned about environmental damage that fake 'grass' has on the ecosystem?

People like you clearly need educating in this.
