Artificial grass - yes or no?

ChicagoBears · 01/05/2023 21:40

I have a substantial garden, some has porcelain tiles but it’s mostly loose stone which looks bare and is difficult to use so I was considering artificial grass.

I know there’s lots of grades of grass, I’d opt for the premium grade but wanted to garner opinion, what (if any) are the drawbacks of artificial grass? Will I love to regret it?

We are not talking a little bit. But hey ho if you want to take the piss out of a child with special needs go for it .

Conchersbonkers · 03/05/2023 19:18

Wtf are people talking about car fumes? So if you drive, you can't do any other environmentally friendly actions? This is a rather simple choice, not having plastic paved over wildlife on purpose. If you don't drive even better. If you don't do other damaging actions, even better. We're talking about this single action of fake grass not about other unrelated issues. Only Greta is allowed to criticise?

Thing is, when people come to my house, I don't mention the fake grass. Same as when I go to somebody else's house who has fake grass, it doesn't get mentioned either.

I feel for your friends if all you do is judge 🙂

They have eyes though. They see it and most will thing it looks hideous.

Lonelycrab · 03/05/2023 19:56

It is different, though. Right outside your back door is a place where nature lives

It’s pretty much that. Caring about the “environment” isn’t like tokens you can exchange or somethingHmm

This is about the living organisms all around you, us, anywhere outside of the places we live, and helping those ecosystems to thrive. Because at the end of the day, plastic is bad.

none of my friends have it. So I don’t judge them, as there is nothing to judge. if however they did put it in, which I can’t imagine, I would absolutely judge. As would most other people.

'As would most other people'

Thank goodness we are not friends then.

Yeah but no one’s taking the piss out your child. They’re disagreeing with your argument. That you bought your child into.
I know you thought you’d close down the debate but actually it doesn’t matter what you’re circumstances are, fake grass is unnecessary and horrible for the environment. There’s always a better choice than plastic grass.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 03/05/2023 20:44

I surprised that so many posters are so defensive about having fake grass.

You think it's right for you? Fine, but no one else has to say they like it.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 03/05/2023 20:54

Or why so many are pretending they HAD to get fake grass for spurious reasons. You chose it because you like it, no need to make up an excuse.

People are defensive because they've spent a lot of time and money making the garden how they like it and so it's accessible for them/caters their needs/exactly how they want it.

Yet so many RUDE posters on Mumsnet are being precisely that - rude - about artificial grass. Tacky, fake, shit... if you have nothing nice to say, don't bother 🙂

OP asked for opinions on fake grass, you silly goose!

Lonelycrab · 03/05/2023 21:37

time and money making the garden how they like

Very good for your efforts but nobody else likes it. Certainly not the plants or animals in the garden.

We should be encouraging plant and animal life. Not sanitising and getting rid of it.

The production of this stuff is a nightmare. Horrendous petro chemical stuff, and then you dump it in the earth six years later because you’re bored of it and/or it’s gone all manky.

Just grow grass, or if it’s shady grow stuff that will grow in the shade.

Don’t plate it in plastic

People shouldn't be quiet about the issue though, it needs calling out so that hopefully societal pressure will mean fewer people choose it in future (as we wait for a total ban.) It isn't rude to say it's fake and shit. It IS fake, by its very nature and it's utterly shit for the environment at every stage.

It's not being rude.

It is about spreading awareness of how damaging it is for our ecosystem, habitats, the insects that share our green spaces and our environment plastic fake shit 'grass' actually is.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/05/2023 22:13

It's a vile abomination. Cannot stand the stuff.

That’s not how chat forums work, the op asked for opinions, so people have given them, it really isn’t a case of people can only respond and say nice things. That’s not a thing.

if people feel it’s those things you say then they are allowed to give their honest opinions, if you struggle with the fact so many people feel so negatively about plastic grass, then it’s best to hide the thread.

The way she said her son eats grass is supposedly the reason she has put down fake 'grass'

Shock horror.
Imagine if he picks up a worm to eat!

Extra nutritional value for the worm, alongside the grass.

@OddsocksinmyDocs

Are you seriously upset that people are calling artificial grass, fake?

It is literally fake grass.

This, 100%

My comment was in return to the poster who suggested those with fake grass are getting defensive. Though it's those without it that are mainly being the defensive ones...

That makes literally no sense. No one is defensive about not having fake grass !
