Artificial grass - yes or no?

ChicagoBears · 01/05/2023 21:40

I have a substantial garden, some has porcelain tiles but it’s mostly loose stone which looks bare and is difficult to use so I was considering artificial grass.

I know there’s lots of grades of grass, I’d opt for the premium grade but wanted to garner opinion, what (if any) are the drawbacks of artificial grass? Will I love to regret it?

Absolutely no. Fine for people who are unable to mow their lawns due to disabilities etc otherwise it's horrible stuff and so bad for the environment

SideBob · 03/05/2023 12:28

No one seems to want to admit that everyone does things that upset the environment. Apparently its all down to fake grass alone.

This is a silly line of reasoning. So nobody can meet your impossible standard to criticise fake grass then, basically?

^Can't criticise needless plastic bags and packaging at supermarkets if you've ever bought an item new, ever!

Can't criticise bad farming practices if you eat food!^

I think you'll find most people who criticise plastic grass also criticise things like unnecessary car use, too. Nobody thinks fake grass is causing the end of the world - mostly because few people choose to use it.

SideBob · 03/05/2023 12:29

Ultimately it's up to the individual to install it, there's no regulations yet. That doesn't mean it's a good thing or cenotaph from criticism.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 03/05/2023 10:30

Not that people should have to explain their reasoning for having it but hey, thank goodness not everybody is as judgemental as you 🙂

Trying to justify your reasoning behind tacky fake ' grass' 🤔

megletthesecond · 03/05/2023 14:21

Yes. I criticise lazy car use (1 mile up the road to the shops ffs) in the same way I criticise plastic gardens.

It depends on people's situations. I have a child with disability. So does another poster on this thread. Also disabled and elderly who can't keep up with the garden anymore

Why would plastic better than real grass for a disabled child?

If people can’t keep up with mowing the grass then there’s loads of alternatives which actually involve nature. So selfish to fuck up your patch of earth because you can.

A person up thread explained about her child. And I cam honestly understand in get situation why she had done it.

In my case my child eats grass. So it was safer to put down fake grass. He can play and enjoy it more freely.

Indeed. So i don't drive so I shall have my fake grass instead. Whilst others may drive, but have real grass. People may drink bottle water whilst I may drink tap water. Someone may have a paved/gravel drive way whilst I may have grass . It all swings in circles.

Um ok. Confused

enhoy your plastic lawn.

agentshreddie · 03/05/2023 15:40

as many people including myself mentioned, fake grass is tacky and horrible in general. no amount of ah but I like it will change my judgement as I had it (when I moved into my new house and factored in cost of removal) and experienced it first hand, couldn't wait to rip the thing off.

I really don't understand this love of plastic which destroys the environment through its whole lifecycle of production, use and end of its life when it will go to landfill. there are so many other options if you don't want real grass.

For those who "absolutely need" it, I am first wondering what they were doing before this invention, and also wondering perhaps an alternative is some natural stones with no concrete underneath and grass/moss/something natural (I hear creeping thyme is great for bugs) with potted wildlife loving plants could be an option?

You know you can eat grass though. And not plastic. It’s just an excuse because you want plastic in your garden.
And the poster who’s kid no longer has a waterlogged garden is too. Plastic doesn’t absorb water so where’s its going do you think?

There is sand and soil underneath the grass which is obviously helping. Its not waterlogged underneath so it's helped.

It depends what's under the fake grass. Alm through this thread people have spoken about water sitting in top/dog pee/it being hot. None of this is the case

It's the hoovering the grass that makes me laugh 😂

Backtothegym · 03/05/2023 18:08

If I’m completely honest, I’d be very embarrassed to have a plastic lawn. I’d also have to take it up smartish. I can’t imagine sitting outside looking at my plastic grass, or inviting guests round and being outside sitting round the plastic grass.

the thing is if you know someone who has it, you need to look straight faced and say it looks great, that it looks real, pretend you’d consider it yourself, jealous of rhe no mowing thjng, as you can’t look them in the eye and say fuck me that’s appalling.

It’s an unwritten rule of social etiquette, no matter what level of hideousness some one has, in their home or garden, you need to exclaim you love it.

It is different, though. Right outside your back door is a place where nature lives, a space you share with other living things. To think, oh I'll just rip it up and smother it with plastic, fuck all the little creatures that live there and play an important part for the other animals that live there. It is so selfish. All you have to do to make a difference in this case is to not actually do anything.

Thing is, when people come to my house, I don't mention the fake grass. Same as when I go to somebody else's house who has fake grass, it doesn't get mentioned either.

I feel for your friends if all you do is judge 🙂

You're still arguing the toss about your bloody shit fake grass. 🤷‍♀️

Because you don't drive, I'm assuming you never go in a taxi, use public transport etc?

Face it, it's tacky, ugly and no matter how much time and effort people put into it, it will always look hideous.

I said that where? You don't want to share your little bit of land, with other living creatures that play an important part in the food chain, fine. Hopefully those of us that do will help ensure food is available for you in the years to come.

I honestly sometimes think the sooner the human race is wiped out, the better.

Yep, even if you are a multi millionaire, your fake grass will still be nasty.

Good news on the human extinction front…

none of my friends have it. So I don’t judge them, as there is nothing to judge. if however they did put it in, which I can’t imagine, I would absolutely judge. As would most other people.

😁 I guess even fake grass has a silver lining.
