Just a little fourward planning . We are all looking forward to another thread of fabulous pictures. It can be a quiet time but I am sure some of us will have autumnal colours to share . The trees are starting to turn here . I have just picked an allium from my photo collection to start the thread off .
You are very welcome to finish or visit the old thread . I do not know how to do ... this is the old thread here thing .

Leaf of Ensete ventricosum 'Maureli' (that's a poncey banana to you and me) in the evening sunshine.

Sweetpea1532
Thank you.
Yes these are the suffragette colours.
People stop and chat if I'm in the garden and I'm always happy to promote the cause!

Sweetpea1532 · 17/06/2021 06:17

Thank you! @AnneKipanki and @setthecontrols
I have learned something new today!
I'm going to plant a suffragette garden, too...such a sacrifice that our foremothers made..

Furries · 17/06/2021 06:34

@Beebumble2 - thank you. I love my house too, but to be honest it’s a bit of a warning re don’t let your heart rule your head! I thought “it’s been standing over 200 years, what could go wrong?”

Answer - blooming everything!

But my front garden has been a 3 year project. No idea what I’m doing, credit has to go to the good shrubs I bought. This is what it looked like before.

You have transformed it . Fabulous job .

No job is ever small in an old house.

@AnneKipanki - thank you for teaching me a new word, I’ve never come across floriferous before, probably because I’ve never been interested in gardening. I love learning new words, hope I can remember this one!

Furries · 17/06/2021 06:55

@Sweetpea1532 - hand on heart, I am not talented! I just chose well with the roses I picked. The company that sells them gave me a vague idea of what to do with the space - and the quality of the plants did the rest.

Completely second your advice re bees and flowers. Last summer, I was dead heading pelargoniums and grabbed one head to cut it. My hand started “buzzing” and realised there was a bee in there. Thankfully the cute little furry didn’t sting me.

Saw your posts earlier, hope all is ok as possible re the fires. I think most of us in the UK can’t comprehend that kind of risk on a regular basis - and on the flip side, probably seems weird to you that a few days of heavy rain here can cause big problems. I always wish for constant sun, but seeing your posts bring back the reality of what a dry climate can be like.

Furries · 17/06/2021 06:59

@AnneKipanki - you’re not wrong there! I need to follow this thread more, it’s a very uplifting place. Thank you for keeping it going.

Furries · 17/06/2021 07:12

@AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet - there is no secret from me, I am not green-fingered and am clueless with regards to gardening!

I had a “picture” in my head of roughly how I wanted the garden to look. With regards to the Rose section, I emailed David Austin as they have a “design” service and asked what can I do with this space. They sent back a simple design of standards mixed with shrubs and I then chose what I wanted.

I then just followed their guidance (online and in their booklets) re planting, feeding/mulching (twice a year), deadheading and cutting back first quarter of the UK year.

Will reiterate again. I am NOTa gardener, I haven’t got a clue about most stuff. But creating this has been “easier” as it’s only one plant to think of, yet creates maximum impact. I haven’t got to worry about different needs of plants throughout the year, I can just maintain the same regimen for all of them.

The front garden is what people will see as they pass by. My back garden is “functional” (looks like shit!)

AlwaysLatte · 17/06/2021 07:21

The roses are doing well, and the vegetables have enjoyed last night's rain. This year potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes, carrots, spring onions, leeks, courgette, beetroot spinach and lettuce. Hopefully it won't end up being caterpillar food like the broccoli was last year!

What a lovely thread. My garden is in south west France. My roses and nigella have nearly finished flowering, hoping for a good second bloom. I’ve also been carefully mowing round the billy goat orchids. This one is called a rose “des artistes”( or it might be “peintres”) smells amazing and flowers throughout the summer

@AlwaysLatte - wow, I love your roses over the porch, absolutely stunning! What are they and what is the scent like?

Very impressed with the veg you’re growing. I’ve never tried as don’t think I can commit to the nurturing process!

Furries · 17/06/2021 07:35

Had some random poppy plants spring up. They weren’t where I “wanted” them to be, but left them as was interested to see what they looked like.

They flowered last week, and I think the colour is lovely - got a few friends and family that I’m saving the seed pods for - hopefully we will all get a colourful display next year.

I'm way behind on thanking everyone for their photosSmile

@Furries , yes the fires are terrifying and sometimes can devastate large areas...a village near me lost over 400 homes in one go from a wild fire.years ago...thank goodness for insurance and also that not a single life was lost!
I am amazed at your home! I love it! But as you said, much work is involved in keeping it up...you are doing a magnificent job...and I still have to give you many praises for your front garden! I do think the quality of the shrubs and plants have a lot to do with their success, like you've said.

@AnneKipanki
What on Earth have you gotten up to now?! Have you taken up house refurbishment along with gardening and photography? That's right professional scaffolding you've shown us..... you must take some more aerial shots of your gardens for us whilst you're up there Grin😂

Sweetpea1532 · 18/06/2021 19:11

@AnneKipanki BTW, what's that delicate pink flowering Bush in the first photo?Wink

AnneKipanki · 18/06/2021 19:36

I have taken some shots .
The photos are Gertrude Jekyll rose from David Austin, then there is a pale pink geranium .
My philadelphus is starting to flower. It’s my favourite.

@Sweetpea1532 - 400 homes, that’s awful, and amazing no lives were lost in that.

I’m definitely a lurker on this thread, but I’ve enjoyed seeing the kind of plants that thrive where you are - looks so different to what we get naturally in the UK.

Thanks re my home. Front garden looks a bit different today. We’ve had torrential rain over the last 24 hours, so lots of the Rose stems are completely flattened. Outlook doesn’t look good for the next week or so. I’m taking a relaxed approach - they bounced back magnificently after early year pruning, so all will be ok!

Furries · 19/06/2021 02:13

@AnneKipanki - no photos showing just fyi. Really want to see some more shots if GJ as it’s one I’m thinking of adding to the garden.
