Just a little fourward planning . We are all looking forward to another thread of fabulous pictures. It can be a quiet time but I am sure some of us will have autumnal colours to share . The trees are starting to turn here . I have just picked an allium from my photo collection to start the thread off .
You are very welcome to finish or visit the old thread . I do not know how to do ... this is the old thread here thing .

@WobblyLondoner
Lol! Good one!
When I was staying with my friend who lives across the River Thames from Battersea she was busy during the days...that gave me tonnes of time to walk ALL AROUND! I was a bit intimidated with the tube and buses so I just walked every where...I had the best time peeping into gardens. I walked so much I had to buy a new pair of trainersGrin.

@AnneKipanki wow, I had no idea the berberis is so big...it must be quite a beautiful sight. Is it located in your back garden where you showed us last year?

Sweetpea1532 · 23/05/2021 19:04

Yes, I've had trouble with fruits and vegetables, too. Although my daughter brought me some world famous Vidalia onion sets that I'm attempting to grow. I'll send photos...they are very interesting.
She also gave me a lemon tree. She's had really good luck with it the past few years, but she found a hypodermic needle syringe in the pot.Shock she lives in a very urban area with lots of homeless so now she is afraid to grow any edibles for fear of someone injecting them with poison, drugs, etc.Confused🙄 she is so disappointed because she was doing very well with gardening..her strawberries were big and juicy. No more...so now on top of having grand-dogs, I have grand-plants!Grin

Tumbleweed there is a section on a woodland zone on episode 8 of gardeners world if you are looking for inspiration, looked great with ferns, cowslips, bluebells and all sorts..

Sweetpea don't grow much veg as haven't got much space. My daughter has grown some rainbow chard which just keeps going all through winter, just cut and come again. Have a few herbs, a Basil was here when we moved in and a lemon thyme.

beautyisfoundwithin · 23/05/2021 21:39

Love that 'pot luck' container @waltzingparrot, lovely vibrant colours.

Beautiful blooms @applecatchers36.

That Berberis is stunning @AnneKipanki, amazing contrasting colours.

What a gorgeous space you have @Tumbleweed101!

I'm curious @Sweetpea1532, are you American? I know you live in the US, but I was wondering if you're American or if you moved there? As I've mentioned before I live in Germany in the Bavarian Alps, but I'm English, moved here 7 years ago. I do grow fruit and vegetables (or at least I try to!).

beautyisfoundwithin · 23/05/2021 21:48

I was just gifted this plant from my neighbour. I complimented hers a while ago as I loved the colours and she kindly took cuttings and created a new plant for me! I think it's a Coleus of some kind?

@beautyisfoundwithin That is indeed a coleus, what a gorgeous plant.

I'm trying to grow them from seed this year. They used to be a huge favourite of my grandfathers (sadly long gone) and I suddenly had an urge to try some.

Tumbleweed101 · 23/05/2021 23:00

Thank you - yes, I really learned to appreciate the garden and local area through this last year and it's inspired me to work on it much more. My children are all secondary age/adults so I can use much more of the space for plants now. The trampoline will hopefully be able to go in the next year or two, but the younger ones still want it for now.

I'll have a look at that gardeners world episode, thank you.

Sweetpea1532 · 24/05/2021 00:47

@applecatchers36
That rainbow chard sounds interesting...all winter, you say? I might try some of that.

@beautyisfoundwithin
Yes, I'm second and third generation American and have never lived outside of the US...
Most of my good friends are British. We've been on many holidays together.some live here, some in the UK. I do have my teapot, and tea cozy, etc. Does that make me a bit British since I only brew loose leaf Yorkshire Gold in it?Grin
That coleus from your neighbour is spectacular!

AnneKipanki · 24/05/2021 07:14

I like loose leaf Yorkshire Gold too . Especially on a weekend!

OP posts:
Sweetpea1532 · 25/05/2021 00:45

Yorkshire Gold is so delicious ...I even drink it cold with ice!
Since I brought up vegetable gardens, I felt it only right that I show you my efforts...
We are going to starve! That one little tomato cost me $10 so farGrin
Isn't it interesting how the onions grow? These are my first...it appears the earth is standing still since they've only gotten this big in 3 weeks. I'm not patient enough to grow vegetables Grin
Anyway, see how the onion actually sits on top of the dirt to grow and only the roots are under the soil? A squirrel will probably come and snatch them just when they are ready to harvest. Hmm
I saw a baby squirrel eating the leaves off my neighbours lemon tree 2 days ago!ShockConfused
@beautyisfoundwithin..it appears it's up to you to grow the world's food supply since I'm not having much luck

I've been inactive since I've killed most of my plants from last year I'll probably buy some more soon.

@Sweetpea1532 I'm probably very wrong and inexperienced but shouldn't you be mulching around the onions? So they're always covered in a mound of soil?

Sweetpea1532 · 27/05/2021 03:54

@Notsogreenthumb
Thank you for being ever so polite with your question!
Truth is, I have no earthly idea...
I'll have to check Farmer Google since this is my first year trying to grow them.
Last year my daughter grew some at her home without mulch and they grew okay...but mother-like-daughter, she didn't know that either Grin
Thank you for pointing that out to me.
Although, these onions are special onions that for years were only grown in Southeast Georgia USA in a tiny town called Vidalia, Ga. These special onions claim to fame was that they were sooo sweet that people would eat them like apples. And they are huge! The farmers there were the only ones who could grow these onions because there was something special about the sandy soil round those parts....I guess the trademark or whatever ran out so now they sell the onion sets on line...problem is...only that area in SE Ga. has the right soil composition to turn them sweet as apples...I think it is something to do with the absence or presence of sulfur in the make up.
I know you had no idea you were going to get a wee dissertation on Vidalia onions but just think of how many people you can now dazzle with your new found agricultural knowledge.
I'll keep you postedSmile

Sweetpea1532 · 27/05/2021 04:10

@Notsogreenthumb
I have just sent off an enquiry to the Vidalia Onion Committee asking them if these onions should be grown in mounds..I will keep you posted as to their reply. Thanks for bringing this growing technique to my attention!
BTW, whilst having a look around their website I discovered that there is an actual Vidalia Onion Museum in Vidalia! I thought you might want to know this so you can put the Museum on your bucket list when you plan your future vacations to the USGrin

AnneKipanki · 27/05/2021 07:55

I thought that said “ with US”😂

When I moved into this house there were raised vegetable beds . There were carrots, onions, and beetroot

I spent all day pickling the beetroot to get 2 jars .We grow flowers in it now .

OP posts:
Sweetpea1532 · 27/05/2021 08:17

Yes, come one, come all to Sweetpea1532 's @AnneKipanki😂
Great beetroot story!

AnneKipanki · 27/05/2021 08:35

You should be asleep @Sweetpea1532. Your Mom is right .... too much screen time ! 😂
Mind you , my H says I am like a teenager with my phone. I left it in the car by accident on Saturday when we had lunch with friends.
He jokingly said they should watch my face ...I just left it in the car . I was VERY good .

Ha! Has my mum somehow worked out a way to have you spy on me and report back? I wish I could share your joke with her, but that would be telling on myself 😂
Love the lunch with friends conundrum!
And yes, I am going to sleep now!🤤😴

Sweetpea1532 · 27/05/2021 08:58

@AnneKipanki
Forgot to thank you for the info about a fen....they are beautiful... I never even knew they existed...so colourful!

beautyisfoundwithin · 27/05/2021 16:54

That's a bit too much responsibility for me @Sweetpea1532, and my efforts are most certainly not up to the job! 😂😂

I'll try to remember to take some more photos of what I'm growing but it's pouring with rain at the moment (again 🙄).

Here's a mixture of Courgette and Marrow plants that I've got, photo is from a couple of weeks ago now. I grew them all from seed and they seem to be doing ok so fingers crossed. A typical example of me sowing too much as always though, I have a whole other tray full as well!

Oh - also a tray of wild salad leaves (not sure exactly what, I just sowed a mixed packet of seeds). It may not look all that exciting but it was a triumph to me as it was the first time I managed to keep the slugs at bay and actually eat all of the salad myself! 😆

@beautyisfoundwithin

I am so impressed with your farming skills..being able to grow actual food is farming...not just gardening, in my book.
Keep us updated, ok? Have you ever let any edibles go to seed? I love how some of them turn into beautiful flowers when they do. Does the courgette produce a colourful flower before the veg starts to grow? In Mexican fare the orange flowers are used in quite a few squash dishes...yum, delicious!

@AnneKipanki Ok, MissyHmm
My mum must have gotten to you after my last posts as when I awoke I couldn't get into my phone...it had a security code on it and my normal lock pattern that I only use when away from home failed! The magical IT mind that I possess has allowed to me work around it, though so there! 😛
It's a real shame I'm not able though to post all the gorgeous colour that I woke up to this morning...my gardens have turned into a spring fest of blossoms...oh well Grin
@Notsogreenthumb. I'm still awaiting the answer from the VO Committee Wink
