Just a little fourward planning . We are all looking forward to another thread of fabulous pictures. It can be a quiet time but I am sure some of us will have autumnal colours to share . The trees are starting to turn here . I have just picked an allium from my photo collection to start the thread off .
You are very welcome to finish or visit the old thread . I do not know how to do ... this is the old thread here thing .

I am enjoying your winter photos..I like to see the skeletons of the beautiful spring and summer Gardens and what is actually underneath them. Also how you've taken a relatively blank space and worked the flowers, etc into it to create a beautiful spot.Flowers

AnneKipanki · 07/01/2021 18:53

Thank you @Sweetpea1532 and @beautyisfoundwithin .
Do the ground squirrels get drunk if it makes tequila?
I am sure there is footage on the internet of a red squirrel that got drunk eating fermented fruit .

I was wondering the same thing! Grin
How sad about your blue Agave.

Sweetpea1532 · 07/01/2021 20:50

@AnneKipanki
Is your grass artificial?Grin
It's so lush...have you planted a winter winter variety?

I'm getting a little paranoid that I'm clogging up MN with my numerous posts. I guess members can hide my posts if I'm annoying them.

Here's something interesting that popped up today on my phone...I had to screenshot the address since I don't know how to even begin to do links..
I think probably most of us can relate to the gardeners in the article who don't take the easy way out

Some of my roses haven’t stopped flowering. They look quite striking after last night’s deep frost.

Thanks for the link @Sweetpea1532.

Wow, so beautiful @VenusClapTrap!

My grass is mainly moss too @AnneKipanki!

Sweetpea1532 · 09/01/2021 01:45

@AnneKipanki
No wonder your "grass" looks so lushGrin

@VenusClapTrap
Gorgeous colours on your roses
Have they thawed out yet? I hope the frost didn't kill them
Such unusual photos...the roses look like something from a science project gone rogue

They must have discovered how to make tequila because I found another decimated plant on my back slope....this means WAR. I was ok with losing a few agave over the years but 2 in 2 days is not ok! And the 2 plants weren't even near each other...one in the side garden and the one today is in the back garden...I was so gutted that I turned on the garden hose and stuck it in the tunnel under where the fallen leaves were. I did some weeding for about 15 minutes during the baptism and not a drop of water was seen again after it went in the hole....which means that the tunnel is very, very long...at least my slope got some deep wateringGrin

Thanks! It looks like I'm going to need it...as you can see in the photo the little stinker back filled the hole last night after my deep watering session...I can just imagine him saying to himself, " humph, I'll show that Sweetpea who's boss"

On another front....(there is always something) My fake grass had several spots that had become lumpy...I decided to investigate. When I peeled back the turf and liner I was quite surprised to find several bulbs starting to come up. But, of course they would come up after I'd forgotten all about them and put the turf down over them...I forgot about them because in 2 years they never made an appearance, cheeky monkeys!

This photo is of a very interesting flowering scrub(?) that I believe is a native wildflower...the little flowers are yellow when they bloom and then after the bees extract the nectar, the flowers turn red. Bees can't see red very well so God made it so they don't waste their energy trying to get nectar from an empty flower since they can't see them..Nature is so amazing!
You might need to zoom in

Here is my Stanhopea orchid, which smells exactly like Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream.

I hope you've had better luck in the war against the squirrels @Sweetpea1532! 😂And thanks for sharing the wildflower, you're right nature really is amazing!

Gorgeous orchid @echt. And scented too! I have lots of orchids indoors but none of them are scented.

In the winter we have a large flock of Alpine Choughs visit everyday for food (in the summer they are higher up in the mountains). They're very tame and I feed them on an upstairs windowsill where they will often eat right out of my hand!

Just snapped some photos of today's visit.

Beautiful flower and I just love that cocoa butter smell...reminds me of beach days of my teen years
@beautyisfoundwithin
Thanks for the encouragement
Since my last hole clearance I haven't seen any signs of squirrels...ha, but I know they are under the ground waiting for me to relax
Thanks for the photos of the Alpine choughs...like AK pointed out they are so sleek..I love that they made your evergreen look like a Christmas tree all decked out

Sweetpea1532 · 15/01/2021 21:20

Another posting of an easy to grow succulent...don't know the proper name, but it's called a maternity plant....because it drops off the little bits on the ends of the leaves and reseeds itself

As can be seen in the photos my garden is very dull and soggy - except for this Hellebore argutifolius (I think it is). Such a nice bright green and has survived the -6C we had a couple of weeks ago. I am not sure how to propogate but I think I will pot it for next winter so there is some bright green by the front door. It has jagged leaf edges.
I am in a wet part of Scotland.
The wine bottle wasn't left by a passing drunk but is for a size comparison.
BTW I have a rhododendron in my garden, 15ft+ high, large leaves, lovely creamy white flowers with yellow centres and a pungent vanilla perfume, flowers in June.
Does anyone know what it might be??? I've lost the name tag.....

That's a massive hellebore .

OP posts:
PinkyParrot · 21/01/2021 18:59

It's about 3 years old I think. I don't remember buying it- I'm just surprised how good it looks at this time of year. The flowers are green/ yellow so don't show up much.

Sweetpea1532 · 21/01/2021 22:50

@PinkyParrot
Your hellebore adds a real pop of green to your landscape...thanks for dragging through the sogginess to get a photo ..And thank you for taking one for the team by drinking down a bottle of wine so you could show us the size comparison... such a sacrifice you made...hard job, but somebody's gotta do itGrinWine
Actually, having the green bottle in the photo made for a nice still life scene Flowers
