Does the gravel normally keep the slugs off @RaptorInaPorkPieHat ? I keep seeing all these beautiful hostas in peoples gardens on our walks and think to myself, how the heck have you grown that!?! In my garden the slugs and snails demolish hostas and delphiniums before they get more than 2 leafs!!!

beautyisfoundwithin · 25/06/2020 16:45

I haven't heard of Astrantia either, but they're gorgeous! I'll definitely add to my never-ending wish list!

Thanks @GiantKitten, yes it is on wheels so I can chase the sun, and also avoid the rain if there's too much of it!

@popgoesperfection it's funny you say that as I have two big Hostas in my garden and the slugs have never so much as touched them. Which I always thought was strange as I thought Hosta was a slug favourite... The amount of plants I have lost to the slugs on the other hand is endless!

Lovely roses as always @AnneKipanki and @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet!

@Lonelycrab s/he is so cute!

Crazzzycat · 25/06/2020 16:51

Same here @popgoesperfection. I’ve long given up the hope of growing a nice hosta and now use my single hosta as an “indicator plant”. I’ve put it by the front door and when I see it develop lots of holes, I know it’s time to order more nematodes! 😂

Having a hedgehog in your garden is so lovely @Lonelycrab! I’m a tiny bit jealous 🙈

And thanks for the antihistamine tip Always. I definitely need to get me some of that!

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 17:44

😂 I might have to order some!! Where do you get yours from @Crazzzycat?

Are your hostas in pots @beautyisfoundwithin? I've just dug mine out of the garden a couple of days ago and put it in a pot as the massive ones I see in gardens are always in pots 🤔

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/06/2020 17:47

I think so @popgoesperfection, they don't like the sharp bits. My dad has the most amazing Hostas, but his garden is all pots and gravel. I know better than to even try. Maybe our resident hedgehog is why we haven't had as many slugs this year.... We've actually got some sea shells instead this year (because Sarah Raven was the only place delivering top dressing).

I've long given up on lupins (another slug favourite).

I order antihistamines in bulk of the internet, much cheaper even than supermarket prices (house full of hayfever/allergic people).

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 18:01

My lupin just about managed to flower before slugs and snails made there way up onto the leaves 😡 I've got some seashells I might crush them up and try them around the hosta and lupin 🙂
Please share if you have any other tips @RaptorInaPorkPieHat 🙂

beautyisfoundwithin · 25/06/2020 18:07

@popgoesperfection They were both in the ground until very recently. They were actually already here when I moved in, although much smaller. I've recently dug one up and put it in a pot as I wanted the ground space for something else, and wanted something shade tolerant in a pot in another location. There's no reason I can think of as to why the slugs aren't interested!

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 19:54

It's strange how they affect some and it others isn't it @beautyisfoundwithin
I'll see how it goes now it's in a pot 🤞🏻
Maybe I should think about growing plants that they don't like 🤔😂
So it seems the rain we have had in between the glorious sunshine is the reason my rose isn't happy, the container it was in didn't have drainage holes (why do they make them without holes!??) and it was soaked so I think the roots were 'flooded' 😭 can anybody suggest the best thing to do to try and save it, I have risked moving it into the ground in the hopes that will make it happier 🤞🏻🤞🏻

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 19:54

Oh and it's a DA iceburg

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 25/06/2020 20:03

From hydrangea to hedgehogs... this is just too much! Shock
I know that my guy was on his usual patrol of the garden until a few weeks ago, but I believe it was then mating season, so he left me in search of romance. I'm hoping that he will soon realise that fatherhood is not what he had envisaged, and that I have far more to offer him than she ever could.
Can you tell that I've had a glass of wine? 😂
But seriously, they are great for slugs. My Lupins are still going strong. And I think it's important to have a birdbath too, I have a male blackbird who spends his days in it. Everything appears to be untouched by slugs 🤞

Japanese Anemone “September’s Charm”. I think my garden is now officially mixing up its seasons 🤔

@popgoesperfection I get my nematodes from Nematodes Direct. You can even take out a subscription for them, but l use them once in spring and once in Autumn with the occasional top up in between if too many new holes appear in the hosta.

As you can tell from the snail trails on this Anemone picture, with that level of nematode application slugs and snails are still very much present, but there’s not so many that they totally eradicate the garden

Thanks @Crazzzycat I'll have a look.
I don't think it helps that we have decking so somewhere dark damp and out of the way for them to hide !!
I did think for a second @AnneKipanki haha
Here is the one flower my dianthus has grown....how can it only have made one !?! 😕

popgoesperfection · 26/06/2020 13:36

Well a big box arrived, I wasn't expecting it for a week or so, and even though I've got the soil, it's too hot to dig holes

I just went to the garden centre to buy 2 big pots for the David Austin roses I am planning on buying, however I can't decide which ones, anyone fancy helping me with your favourites?

beautyisfoundwithin · 26/06/2020 14:41

Some photos I've taken today...

One of my small Geraniums in a pot, and a Petunia that has particularly huge flowers for some reason!

@ditavonteesed Oh, how exciting! I bought 2 DA roses today 🙈 I think this is the first summer ever where we haven't gone on holiday (usually this week), so instead, I've spent the money in the garden.
I've seen gorgeous pictures of Gertrude Jekyll and Princess Alexandra of Kent, in pots (check google)

I bought ''Olivia'' and The Ancient Mariner

I don't think I could choose a favourite.

@Crazzzycat I think the theory that it's a different clematis is probably the most likely but I have a clematis that is dark pink with a purple stripe that fades to the palest pink but I ran out of clematis food during lockdown and have been using Tomorite instead and now it has turned purple so the stripe and petals are almost the same colour. I also have white trailing ivy leaf geraniums that have dark purple insect guidelines that sometimes get very pale pink petals depending on the NPK ratio of the food I am using.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 26/06/2020 14:59

Winchester Cathedral is stunning (the white) It has a pink stripe

The pink is my Princess Alexandra

Thomas A Becket is beautiful, but it was my only rose to get damaged by wind last weekend Sad

I sow'd some wild flowers a few months ago, in a border we never really know what to do with. Just chucked them down and watered. Looking amazing now. I feel all righteous watching all the bees and butterfly's around the garden. The photos are when it just started to flower.
