@Terralee your garden is gorgeous, you have the one thing I wish I had, shade!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/06/2020 18:08

Great minds think alike (or just that the bees make a racket while borrowing in a poppy...

The tentacled succulent in continuing to flower up!

I'm enjoying the lushness of my winter squash and cucumber patch at the moment - today's flowers have sadly withered in the pic - they had been looking very cheery earlier in the day.

Also, hebe in flower, and I like the euphorbia, mullein and nepeta together - even though the euphorbia is past it's best. And a proto winter squash, looking all perky and hopeful. Grin

Wow! So many beautiful flowers since I last looked at the thread!

I've had really busy few days and only just checked in. I agree with AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet, I can't keep up with the thread either!

Not sure whether everyone's photos give me inspiration, or just act as a bad influence to encourage me to spend more money on new things! 😂

My contribution is an 'upcycled' planter using a rusty old BBQ that wasn't any use anymore.

Thanks 😊 I was a bit worried it would turn out to be one of those things that I thought was great but in actual fact was hideous! 😂

That's gorgeous @RaptorInaPorkPieHat! My sunflowers (those that survived the slugs that is 😡) don't seem to be anywhere close to flowering yet.

Crazzzycat · 25/06/2020 10:28

Lovely sunflower @RaptorInaPorkPieHat

I haven’t been out in my garden much this week as the pollen count is sky high, but did manage to snap this picture of one of my Astrantia during one of my very short visits. Looks like I’ll have to enjoy my garden from indoors for a bit! 🤧

It's a dwarf one so only a couple of feet (pic for scale) my giant ones are more crispy are nowhere near flowering yet.

I may have been to the garden centre this morning and bought a DA rose Wink Olivia Rose Austin.

I’ve never heard of Astrantia, Crazzzycat, those are gorgeous flowers! Is it easy to grow?

Lots more amazing and interesting plants here today & the painted barbecue is genius, beauty! Is it on wheels so you can chase the sun?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/06/2020 11:20

I love Astrantia........ mine is sulking this year, I weeded too aggressively around it in march and obviously broke too many roots so no flowers for me Wink (and it wilts at the first sign of sun despite being in the dampest bit of the garden).

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 11:38

@RaptorInaPorkPieHat is it planted in the garden or in a pot? Mine are nowhere near flowering either, I'm trying to growing giant and teddy bear sunflowers.

AnneKipanki · 25/06/2020 11:49

More blooms

@GiantKitten I find Astrantia pretty easy to grow, but @RaptorInaPorkPieHat ‘s experience shows that there are some things they do and don’t like.

Astrantias hate having their roots disturbed. They also like a bit of shade and love a good rich soil.

Having said that, I grow a few in less than perfect soil in full sun and they’re still doing ok. I do give those a bit of a feed from time to time.

I think Astrantia are one of those types of plants that most people would just walk past in a garden centre as they look a bit uninspiring in a little pot. But once they’re planted out in the garden, they become little stars!

They’re great for bees, slugs hate them and they form a nice tight clump so are also good for suppressing weeds

I’m a bit of a fan, in case you can’t tell 😄 I grow all mine in groups of three for impact. I have quite a few of them and still want more 🙈

AnneKipanki · 25/06/2020 13:25

Yes, it is a good idea to plant things in groups for impact rather than have them dotted about.👍🏻

@popgoesperfection they're all in pots, if I plant them out the slugs eat them (I've been very lucky this year because of the dry spring - I tried teddy bear ones a few years back and all were eaten except the ones I gave to my dad). My giant ones are in pots that are too small really, but I was over eager this year (bought too many, sowed too many) so they'll have to make do.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 25/06/2020 13:49

@RaptorInaPorkPieHat Olivia is beautiful. I always admire it at the rose centre I go to. The owner there told me that Olivia was David's favourite rose. Although sometimes I wonder if he tells me these things to encourage me to buy more 😂

Crazzzycat You just reminded me to take an antihistamine 😂
You should try Cetrine, they are non drowsy but need to be taken hours before you're in the garden. I need to mow the lawn this evening and couldn't do it otherwise. Pollen allergy is such a pain when you're a keen gardener and flower lover 😒

I love all your pictures 🌸

Not a garden picture exactly but my little spiky friend was snuffling around the other morning.... I put a big pile of dead wood behind the bush to the left in hope that s/he would set up campSmile

popgoesperfection · 25/06/2020 14:04

Mine are all in pots too, recently re potted into bigger ones. Slugs are such a bloody pest !!!! How big are your giants so far @RaptorInaPorkPieHat ?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 25/06/2020 16:02

@popgoesperfection About my height so a little over 5 ft (including the pot) each pot has copper tape on (although I think the slugs laff at it) and normally I put a top dressing of gravel on everything (but I couldn't get any this year so they've had to do without apart from some I scraped off last years). I'm amazed the slugs havent eaten the dahlias yet Wink
@AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet I love geraniums and roses, such a fab combo.
@Lonelycrab DD bought DH a hedgehog house for fathers day as we apparently get an evening visitor. No idea whether it will get used
