Unless the container is undercover and is watered manually then it must have drainage holes. Hardly anything outside of aquatic plants can spend any time with waterlogged roots.

Crazzzycat · 16/06/2020 18:27

I’m loving all the pictures of pots too and I see the roses are still going strong for many of us. Most of mine are coming towards the end of their first flush now and it’s only the climbers and Thomas A Beckett that are still covered in flowers. I’m sure it won’t be too long before the second flush appears though!

My floral contribution for today is this Gaura. Ugly name for such a pretty flower 😁

My roses have barely started (I must be further north) lots of buds though!

I love gauras, such delicate flowers Smile

Crazzzycat · 16/06/2020 19:09

I never realised that things flower earlier than average in my garden, until I joined this thread Raptor.

I’m in sunny north Wales 😎 I guess the very mild winters here help to get things going a bit earlier.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 16/06/2020 19:25

We're pretty level then Crazzzycat, Just on the other side of the country (Mid Lincolnshire). Funny isn't it, you wouldn't think it would make that much difference. If you ever watch Beechgrove (BBC Scotland or BBC 2 on a sunday morning- I prefer it to Gardeners World but don't tell Monty) they're always talking about things starting much later in Scotland.

I think our roses will be properly flowering in the next week or so (fingers crossed).

Oldraver · 17/06/2020 06:37

I've never seen the lightening petunia before but will definitely get them again. My local garden centre do their own plants so they have some nice stuff, though they didn't have the pink one this time

Talking of not finding stuff in the garden centre... has anyone seen Tagetes this year ? It seems harder and harder to get but us a lovely annual

ditavonteesed · 17/06/2020 06:43

So I had a lovely day yesterday, my mum who is a mega Gardner, has her garden in the yellow book and has been on gardeners world before came round for the first time since lockdown and since I started re doing my garden.
She was so impressed, I've been so excited for her to see it. She's been helping me with lots of advice and obviously I've been sending pictures. Also my neighbour who is also garden mad told me yesterday that the garden is looking absolutely beautiful and she loves it when she opens the gate to come through. So I'm feeling a bit proud of myself.

Initially at the start of lockdown I decided I wanted to do the garden, initially I decided I would pay to get it all paved so I can use it as I'm rubbish at gardening and then I couldn't organise it so I just started and got the bug. Thanks for all the help.

Love these pics

Crazzzycat · 17/06/2020 10:56

That’s lovely Dita. You should be proud of yourself! I think you’ll be very happy in years to come that you didn’t just pave the whole thing. A bit of greenery is so much nicer to look at!

Oldraver · 17/06/2020 12:04

Green is so much nicer to live with

The road I live on has been slowly paved over (well all seem to go for Cotswold Stone) . I understand the ease but it just looks barren

I got a tray of tagetes from Lidl in mid-May, the same week they had potted bidens (which were new to me).

They didn’t have many though. They are gorgeous, & amazingly I’ve managed to keep the slugs off them so far 🤞🏻

GiantKitten · 17/06/2020 13:39

@ditavonteesed your garden is glorious! You are so lucky to be able to have grass Smile

Crazzzycat · 17/06/2020 14:26

The second and final bud on my pink peony has finally opened. It’s all looking a bit pink!

I'm Shock that your mum was on Gardeners' World Dita
Did she get to meet Monty?
Did they visit her garden, or was she a viewer they featured, who sent in footage? I love both. The gardens they visit are usually a specialised interest, e.g. Peony or Clematis, and the viewers footage are always so natural and simple, not all carefully manicured gardens that look unattainable for the average viewer. And they are always so cheerful and enthusiastic Smile So they have a good balance of beginners, more knowledgeable and experienced Gardeners, formal v informal. I'll stop talking about that show now 😂

She must be very proud of you, and you should be too Star

My first (almost) Delphinium, weeks behind you all, rockrose and GK in a pot

Your garden looks great @ditavonteesed! I bet you're so pleased you didn't pave it all now!

That Evening Primrose is lovely @Oldraver. Do they need a lot of care and attention? I tried to grow Moonflower from seed as I liked the idea of something that would bloom in the evening (in normal circumstances this would be when we mostly sit out in the garden), but I had no luck at all Sad

Beautiful Peony @Crazzzycat

My contribution today is a Rhododendron that's just started to bloom.

Alwaysonadiet they visited I think it must have been at snowdrop time she has a lot of snow drops.

My flowers seem to be later than everyone's as well, must be being up north and perhaps because they are all new.

Lovely flowers everyone.

AnneKipanki · 17/06/2020 17:09

I am north as well @ditavonteesed.
Here are some pictures from today of my rosa officianalis , pots , philadelphus.

God, these are so, so beautiful...

Oldraver · 17/06/2020 19:32

@GiantKitten I think Tagetes are grown as a 'companion plant' especially for carotts to keep some bug off so maybe slugs dont like them. They can have a glorious scent if you run your fingers through them. I used to palnt yellow, orange and a mixed one but haven't seen them for years

@beautyisfoundwithin the original EP came from a wild box mix from Aldi and have self seeded. This one out the front, is in the topsoil from next door that I allowed them to tip... so I reckon my plant seeded to next door.

popgoesperfection · 17/06/2020 19:58

@ditavonteesed your garden looks lovely! You should be very proud !! I'm going to share my wlldflower/country garden trough today as I have a few things in bud but seem to be taking aaaagges to open I'm very impatient

@Oldraver I bought some tagetes seeds last year on eBay. They all came in packets with Polish (I think) writing, but luckily there were pictures too so easy enough to work out. There were lots left so I just sowed them all this spring thinking that lots would fail, and probably 90% made it, and are now planted all over the garden!

No flowers yet but they were so pretty last year. I bought yellow, orange and red, the red were the least successful. And I've just googled - Sarah Raven has seeds, so I'll order some for next year now Smile
