No new pictures yet, but the bees were out in force this morning

The last one had five bees fighting for pollen

I live a lavatera as well. My neighbour has an envious one that is dark pink and flourishes, though is probably 18 years old now

I bought a bi- coloured one and it struggled for years and we called it the mardy plant. It used to droop without lots of water and some years hardly flowered. I wonder if plants that have been 'twatted' around with are more delicate

So many beautiful pictures to catch up with ☕️ Smile

Speaking of Geraniums, I promise I'll stop talking about Gardeners' World 🙈 but on Friday's episode, Carol showed us how to propagate using the seeds and also from cuttings of the roots.

Enormous Clematis (again), Rose and very first Hydrangea bloom

I saw that segment on geraniums AlwaysOnABloodyDiet (and the rest of Gardeners’ World!).

I really like the idea of buying a plant for its “genetic material” and using it as the basis for creating more. I’ve certainly started to do more of that since lockdown.

I currently have a few different clematis, budleigha, honeysuckle and fuchsia cuttings that have taken root. And I bought a single phlox plant to use for cuttings. I want about 4 of them and at £12/ plant I’m quite happy to wait and see if I can create more myself 🤓

I’ve also sown some Nigellas WitchWindows using some out of date seeds. I don’t normally have the patience, but I think lockdown is making me a more thrifty & resourceful gardener. Yours look lovely! And I’m excited to know they self-seed. That will save me a job next year 😄

GiantKitten · 07/06/2020 12:29
**@GiantKitten* can you grown clematis in a big pot with an obelisk? I really want a clematis but unsure where to put one and that would solve a massive problem. @Davethecat* absolutely lovely, I am also a novice and I'm really enjoying watching things mature.
Yes you can! My blue one has been in the same pot for 8 years, apparently (first photo is 2012 & it looks pretty new there)

Some years it does better than others - this year is particularly bloomy, partly the spring weather I assume but also I cut it down to new shoots early on, which I often miss doing & then it’s too tangled.

This pot is 45cm. I reckon it could do with a bigger one by now but the logistics are beyond me Grin
You could probably start off with an even bigger one, if you weren’t planning to move it?

@Crazzzycat And then Monty (!!!) said something about the weather being too cold for roses to bloom, and it's only been something like 10 degrees here the past few days, so it was such a lovely surprise that Princess Anne Kipanki bloomed yesterday Smile

I think it looks exactly like my pink Camellia, which actually lasted until a week or so ago

Good luck with your Phlox.

I'm going to try those geranium root cuttings. The only problem is it stops me buying different varieties, or is that a good thing?

Such lovely flowers, such gorgeous colours.

Speaking of which , some plugs I bought in April have turned into the brightest pelargoniums I've ever seen. Here is my first Charles Darwin flower, smells fabulous.

@GiantKitten Wow, your Peonies in the vase are gorgeous. I'm definitely jealous seeing as I only had the one single flower!

Great flowerbed @DavetheCat2001. Certainly better than my effort! I have had issues with plants growing much bigger than I anticipated (or wanted!) so my main flowerbed is complete chaos 🤦🏼‍♀️

Plus, where I've been feeding the birds, lots of sunflowers that I did not sow are now growing all through the flowerbed! I feel like it's a waste to get rid of them all... I have moved some to a more suitable location but there's just so many! I'll just have to pretend I was going for a 'wild' look 😂

Great photos @ditavonteesed. I like your umbrella bird feeder/water holder. I actually bought one for someone as a Christmas present and then I was a bit jealous and wished I'd bought myself one too!

Noflora · 07/06/2020 15:24

Gosh, rabbits are not something a gardener wants to see on her own patch AnneKipanki

I moved a much loved hydrangea Always, some cuttings have taken but this is my first year with no flowers, nice to see yours.

I'm back on Taylors clematis site, this thread is to blame. Luckily the ones I covet most are unavailable.

I envy planning and planting up a virgin flower bed. My garden now is very full of mature shrubs, it was beautifully planned (not by me)for year-round interest and I am trying really hard not to turf out the winter staples of euonymous, mahonia, berberis and plant things for right now. Planting always involves cutting through loads of roots (and stones). It is hard work.

Crazzzycat · 07/06/2020 16:08

Wow, that is quite some clematis GiantKitten! 😮 Beautiful roses AlwaysOnABloodyDiet and NoFlora. That Charles Darwin rose looks a really unusual colour

My floral contribution for the day is this Verbena. It’s only the 2nd year that these are flowering, so I’m not entirely sure, but I thought these weren’t supposed to flower until July?! I think everything in my garden has just gone a bit crazy after the hot weather

Also, not in my garden, but I spotted this magnificent sea holly on my walk today. I love mean looking plants like that 😄

GiantKitten is that a thunbergia (black-eyed Susan Vine) I spy? I have had not much luck with those from seed but the one I bought years ago that was .5m up a cane already did really well.I haven't found any online this year. I do think they are so simple and impactful with their clear colouring and a shape that a child might draw.

Ooh lovely @DavetheCat2001 😍

What kind of flowers are you growing in your wildflower bed? And did you grow them from seed?

I’m looking for some inspiration...😎

GiantKitten · 07/06/2020 17:35

Noflora yes it is, good spot! I’ve previously bought an established one, on a triangular cane support, in late June, & those have raced away but then faded rather. This year Lidl had baby ones in late April & I got 2 orange, 1 yellow & 1 red; planted them much too soon, min temp should be 10 Shock but they survived several mild frosts & are just taking off now. First pic is the first 2 flowers out, in mid-May. I was relieved to see them!

I agree about the flowers, perfectly designed little outlines Smile Very delicate & short-lived but there are always more to come.

(I’m pretty sure I bought my late June ones at B&M, so it might be worth looking there if there’s one near you - 3rd pic is from 2 years ago, taken in early July.)
