Six years into our garden which was lawn laid fence to fence, and I’m finally seeing the border coming together. No planning involved, just a question of constantly moving things to fit spaces or grow them until I know what they’ll do! My peony was a Wilko’s buy, and is starting to look fabulous. Geum is the orange, which I am loving for contrast against the black elder, purples & pinks.
We’re on clay so my roses are great, but only just opening now, and I never know quite how to prune them.
My headache this year is an iris I got from a neighbour where they flourish, but in my garden are about to be devoured by slugs... the dry weather has helped, as has coffee grounds around it, but it’s at the limit of what I’ll do to nurture a plant! It’s kind of sink or swim in my garden Grin

I have one last poppy flower not quite white but almost there, though nowhere near as stunning as the white poppy up thread. The last two years we' be had mostly purpled

Another two years for one flower, though it's a bit spindly. And a Salix which OH calls a stick with bits on the top

I woke up to rain too Smile

GiantKitten I am very glad that I now know what and where my beloved Harlow Carr rose is named after. Have a lovely time there next week Smile

@ditavonteesed Your Rhododendron is probably just finished flowering? I've noticed you all say 'going over', I say fading. They can look quite unsightly when they're finished, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it. Smile

So many gorgeous flowers Shock

@AnneKipanki
How do you do that Scottish face? I want an Irish one Grin

There is not an Irish face as far as I know . There is a shamrock. Use [ then write the word shamrock with NO spaces ,]

@AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet oh - I didn’t know Harlow Carr is a rose! Grin

When you said “my Harlow Carr” I thought you meant looking at all the pics here was like looking at the gardens!

So we’ve both learnt something. (& your Harlow Carr is gorgeous Smile)

It is really cold & windy here today - 10 degrees Shock The rain has stopped here, but it’s still going in Yorkshire. Not a nice day for a stroll in the gardens (esp when Betty’s isn’t open for warming up afterwards!)

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 03/06/2020 13:01

Well then you must have been very confused if you thought I meant that this thread is my Harlow Carr, and then I replied back and said I had never heard of Harlow Carr 😂
I looked at pictures of it on TripAdvisor - wow, it looks incredible.

@AnneKipanki just testing these... [Irish] Shamrock Grin

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2020 13:13

The second pic is one of my favourite roses. The sun swings round behind it which makes them glow even more.

Plus big bountiful pink ones. My garden is lots of DA roses

Absolutely beautiful MarshaBradyo
Do you know what they are called?

AnneKipanki · 03/06/2020 13:23

They are gorgeous @MarshaBradyo .
Can you remember their names?

And you both beat me to that question !

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2020 13:45

Thanks! The deep darker pink one is Sir John Betjeman from David Austin, need to find the other name same shop. Have misplaced pw will find it and see if I can look at account.

Now I can feel another order coming on 🙈 love their roses a lot!

AnneKipanki · 03/06/2020 13:48

We have 2 from DA. We did buy one previously but it died soon after planting.

That is an amazing poppy. Thank you Marsha, they are gorgeous.

I am impatiently awaiting 6 more roses, only 1 of which is Austin bred, but I already have 5 DAs , the 2 from last year doing well the 3 new ones a bit stalled but looking healthy. But I swear no more roses , at least till bare root season.

Crazzzycat · 03/06/2020 15:54

This thread is seriously enabling for rose lovers 🙈 At the last count I had 13 David Austin roses (!), but I still want more.

For the time being though my focus is on getting more pollinator friendly plants in my garden. I bought a book called “Wild your garden” this week and I’ve been getting lots of ideas from it. I now want a wildlife pond, an insect hotel, a wild lawn, bat boxes...I want too much! We’ll see what actually gets put into practice 😁

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 03/06/2020 16:31

Crazzzycat Snap, I have exactly 13 David Austin roses too, including my newest (Gertrude Jekyll) that I bought last weekend 🙈🙊🙊 @AnneKipanki
I didn't mention it because I was embarrassed and thought it might appear a bit crass to repeatedly post pictures of expensive purchases?
Anyway, I saw beautiful pictures of it online and in my book, in a pot. I've never had a rose in a pot, so I decided to go for it. Although the weather is so windy here and the rose is quite flimsy, so I hope it will be ok. The pot is too heavy to move 😑 I should have put the pot in a sheltered area, but I have it on the paving in the open area where I sit.
GK was the weakest looking rose at the garden centre, only beginning to bud. They had gigantic Winchester Cathedrals in full bloom, and they were stunning Shock Do you have one?

I love all your ideas for your garden 😊 It's great to make it as wildlife and bee friendly as possible. People always ask me how come my flowers don't get eaten by snails, and it's because I've made it wildlife friendly, nature will then look after it and regulate itself, e.g. the blackbirds and hedgehogs.

Looking forward to seeing yours 🌹 @Noflora Smile

Noflora · 03/06/2020 17:11

Will post pics as they flower. So far only GG and Claire Austin but Strawberry Hill and Charles Darwin showing colour in the buds. In the meantime another Royal william shot. That bloom on the right is 6 days open (yesterday's pic, still going strong today) and 6" diameter.

I'm loving seeing all of these stunning roses, even if I can't join in, I don't have any roses anywhere near as beautiful as the ones that have been shared here!

But coincidentally I've just taken some photos that fit in with the wildlife topic! I try my best to make the garden as wildlife friendly as possible too. Just managed to get some pretty good close ups by crawling around on the floor like a crazy person 😂

From a quick Google I think it's a Hummingbird Hawk Moth? Might be really common for all I know, I just found it really fascinating to watch.

I love the pale pink rose (coming round to roses)

@WitchWindows, the double poppies (dont know the technical name) are gorgeous aren't they ? I never knew poppies came like that

Crazzzycat · 03/06/2020 18:19

Oh wow @beautyisfoundwithin! I don’t think those are common at all, or at least not where I live.

I had one that came to visit my garden a few years ago. I’m pretty sure it was always the same one as it would show up at exactly the same time every day. Nature is pretty amazing like that!

Coincidentally, what’s that flower you photographed it on?

beautyisfoundwithin · 03/06/2020 21:05

@Crazzzycat it's a Rhododendron. I got a bit too close to get good photos of the flower itself in my quest to get a decent photo of the moth!

AnneKipanki · 03/06/2020 21:07

Looks like a rhododendron !
