Thread 22 Covid Cohort - Creeping towards the Future - Personal Statements and Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@20newnames it's a fracture rather than a displaced break so no wiring - or anything actually.

singingstones · 12/11/2021 09:33

Updated as far as I know with offers and a couple of new people, sorry for any omissions.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn
Oh that's good. Obviously not ideal but hopefully it should heal on its own with time, very painful for him though :-(

Heifer · 12/11/2021 09:45

no advice re trap nerve I'm afraid. Hope it eases soon. It's a nightmare when you're already busy and things go wrong.

Need a check. As we really aren't sure what is best for DD to apply for BSc, BSC with work placement or MSci/MBiol I thought as DD was so keen on becoming a clinical scientist, I would email the recruitment team and ask their advice ie do they have a preference when look at applicants. I emailed as DD (I know it's not a good look for Mum to do it) ;-) I did tell her and she was fine about it. Anyway received this reply

The .......recruitment team are unable to confirm degree eligibility. All applicants will need to apply to have any degrees or qualifications checked for eligibility, this will happen throughout the shortlisting process. You will find the degree requirements and guidance on relevant degrees at ......
It is your decision on which course you choose to study*.

If DD had thought to do this helf self and received this reply she would have been really embarrassed - we tell them all the time to email and ask - is it just me that thinks this reply is quite unhelpful and offputting? or am I being oversenstive (ps my feelings aren't hurt) but I am sure DDs would have been had she actually sent it.

Fruitygal · 12/11/2021 09:49

@Heifer not sure which uni this is? DD could email the head of the department or course instead - well if DD is busy I would write a quick email and get her to send it to them. The main recruitment teams often no nothing. DD sent one to Sheffield and one to Exeter Penryn in the summer and they were super helpful.

singingstones · 12/11/2021 09:55

I would be annoyed by that @Heifer, what a way to engage with a young person (as far as they knew Smile ) keen on entering their profession.

crazycrofter · 12/11/2021 10:04

That's not particularly helpful is it @heifer!?

Hope you feel better soon @Alsoplayspiccolo, these things always happen at the wrong time don't they?

Dd has been applying online for part time jobs with no success and I've been telling her for ages that she might do better just to pop into places with her CV. She wasn't convinced, but finally agreed to hand it in in Sainsbury's on Wednesday - and she has an interview today at 4! It's so nice to be right Grin

Shimy · 12/11/2021 10:10

So sorry for your loss @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. Sincere condolences to you and your family.

Fruitygal · 12/11/2021 10:18

@crazycrofter love being able to be the smug parent with the DCs sometimes - fingers crossed on the job

Heifer · 12/11/2021 10:32

It wasn't to a uni.. it was to the provider of the course DD would do after her degree (didn't want to say in case they blacklisted DD ;-)
Heifer · 12/11/2021 11:07

I didn;t mean to reply to my own post - I meant it for @Fruitygal

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/11/2021 11:23

@Heifer how useless is that?! Why can't they just be clear, if they have no preference then say so and if they do then say that instead!

@crazycrofter good luck to your DD today.

ealingwestmum · 12/11/2021 11:24

Much love to you all Orange

Wheresthebeach · 12/11/2021 11:32

@heifer - well yes that reply just makes you feel a bit silly for asking. Not idea and my DD would have been either irritated or embarrassed to receive that.

Fast moving thread ! @Shimy hope the trip was okay in the end, that message would cause me stress too.
Great news about the driving test @Delphigirl
@AnneOfCleavage glad the form has gone in, the whole thing is such a stress. Move from form stress, to offer stress, to exam/grades stress.
@estherfrewen - Appendix can be so painful, I hope they sort it soon. I feel for you with the timings.

DD very happy - got an offer for the Masters Course from Southampton so she's delighted. Now she'll have to come up with a backup, but it looks like all the offers will be the same so she'll just chose based on the Uni she likes second best from the offers she gets.

I'm impressed by how fast they've been, but that may be because she's deferred for a year.

ealingwestmum · 12/11/2021 11:49

Fantastic news Wheresthebeach!

Shimy · 12/11/2021 11:58

Great news @Wheresthebeach! long may they keep rolling in. Finally got the dreaded news.
Basically, DS was bullied on the trip and called names by a couple of boys, then the rest of the yr group joined in as they thought it was funny. Then it got more serious and DS said he used logic and reasoning to defend himself something he had learnt in CBT when he starts to have anxiety and OCD thoughts. But I was told not to report this to a teacher as this is 'Not what we do!'.. Hmm.

Wheresthebeach · 12/11/2021 12:23

Oh @Shimy that's awful. DD has something similar in primary, which lasted quite a while. I got involved but obviously its easy in primary to wade in. Much harder now. Those boys need dealing with!

Can you convince him to confide to a teacher he likes/trusts (not necessarily the teacher on the trip)? Or does he just want to brush it under the carpet?

singingstones · 12/11/2021 12:40

Oh that doesn't sound good Shimy, infuriating that some feel it's ok to behave like this. I think you should try to persuade him to report. It's so important I think that these things are not just forgotten as if they don't matter.

crazycrofter · 12/11/2021 13:18

Oh no @Shimy, your poor ds. It’s so much worse when it happens away from home too.

It’s really positive he was able to use strategies he’s learned in CBT to defend himself though. I know it’s hard to take any positives out of the situation but it does sound like he dealt with it well.

I’m not sure if I’d wade in at this point in his school career, given he’s only got a few months left. But I would want to! I’d just be worried it would make things worse at such a crucial time and it might overshadow the year. Hope things do blow over. The bullies shouldn’t get away with it though Sad

Hattifatteners · 12/11/2021 13:20

So sorry for your loss @OrangeCinnamonCocktail Flowers

Shimy · 12/11/2021 13:45

@Wheresthebeach & @singingstones He's absolutely adamant that you do not report such things.
@crazycrofter You are correct it is positive he was able to use his CBT strategies but I get what you mean, he shouldn't have had to be in that situation in the firstplace. The thing is DS, always has a bright outlook to life and experiencing new things. He went on the trip thinking it'll be a fun few days, sorting our his geography project, larking around with his mates on the trip and he's come back saying, 'Mum it is not what I thought, it was horrible, they all piled up on me'.
I'm so angry and worried it doesn't set him back again mental health wise because he replays things.
I also agree it might not achieve much and actually spoil things for him more at this stage of his schooling.
