Thread 22 Covid Cohort - Creeping towards the Future - Personal Statements and Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

How weird, I obv didn't refresh from last browsing. So glad the mock went well Zitti.

Termly (that also autocorrected to trembly for me too Zebra) exams sound like the right idea as who knows what else could happen in years to come.

esther oh no. Poor DS. I've also had that and had to have emergency op as they took too long deciding what Was wrong so similar to crofter's DD.

JustherewithmypopcornI somehow missed your post about your DS's fractured jaw 😲 How is he doing?

singingstones · 11/11/2021 18:52

Gosh this thread moves fast - well done to drivers, mock sitters, form senders and anyone with beautiful legs, get well soon to sufferers of broken jaws, appendicitis and Covid, and thinking of you Orange and your DM.
I am on a course this week, hated today but have just one more day to go.

singingstones · 11/11/2021 18:54

(There are official zoom drinks with the trainer tomorrow evening after the last day but we are currently arranging a secret alternative zoom because he is so disliked)

ProggyMat · 11/11/2021 18:55

@estherfrewen hoping all is well with your DS.

Monkey2001 · 11/11/2021 19:13

Well done @AnneOfCleavage DD, let the waiting begin!

If you do get Covid, I hope you get through it as easily as I did. Isolating in my bedroom for a week was quite nice in some ways even if DH was not great at the shopping!

Decorhate · 11/11/2021 21:09

Well done to all the drivers, wishing all those who are unwell a speedy recovery & anyone trying to sort out diagnoses or help with SEN the best of luck.

I have to confess I was one of “those” parents tonight - have emailed the head of 6th form to see what is happening with Ds’ application. Ds thinks it’s held up because his form tutor hasn’t done the reference yet. I work in a school myself & know everyone is busy & short of time, but still... they’ve had it for 2 weeks now.

Fruitygal · 11/11/2021 22:02

@AnneOfCleavage great news the form is sent !! We’ve had 4/5 acknowledgements in the last 24hrs - Exeter uni no sign of acknowledgment but we know they are super slow. Durham 3 emails and accommodation form for colleges to sort already. DD planning to tackle at the weekend.

@Heifer push for assessment as exam extra time will be useful but cut off is normally some time in January for requesting from exam boards. Good luck with others with SEN - DS1 it was a slog but so worth it - DD so much easier once you know what you are doing plus supportive school once diagnosis known - even though only dyslexic in the year group until 6th form.

20newnames · 11/11/2021 22:52

Blimey, this thread flies fast sometimes! Lots of congratulations due and also sadly lots of tricky times for many. Fingers crossed for a swift recovery for all those with illnesses and injuries.

For those that applied to Durham, did you put a college on the UCAS form and still have to them place them in order directly with Durham. If that is the case does it matter which college you put on the form?? DS is applying but it’s not his favourite so he hasn’t yet looked at the colleges.

estherfrewen · 11/11/2021 22:58

Thanks everyone. He's been admitted and they are going to reassess in the morning but sounds as though definitely appendicitis. He said it came on so quickly this morning about 10 but he didn't want to miss school. He's already panicking re mocks etc

Fruitygal · 11/11/2021 23:48

@20newnames DD has put Durham and put South college on form (just in case it did count) as wants self catering but has now had info to rank colleges after Durham have received her ucas form (which is the new system this year) - so will look in more detail

Fruitygal · 12/11/2021 00:10

@estherfrewen let’s hope they find the problem xx

ealingwestmum · 12/11/2021 05:02

He’ll feel so much better if it is taken out quickly with faster recovery than letting it rumble on; when are the mocks, and is it more than one set of them esther?

Oblomov21 · 12/11/2021 06:55

Well done Delphi 🚗
Hopes Esther is ok. And Popcorn jaw.

Monkey2001 · 12/11/2021 06:58

@estherfrewen I hope he is sorted soon and that he trusts the school to adjust his results for whatever he misses. The last thing you want when recovering is exam stress.

20newnames · 12/11/2021 07:02

Thanks @Fruitygal

Hope he’s sorted soon @estherfrewen. Better now affecting mocks rather than the main exams.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/11/2021 07:16

Congrats on the driving test pass @Delphigirl still waiting for another test date for DS here.

@estherfrewen hope all is well with your DS today.

@AnneOfCleavage fingers crossed it’s not Covid, hopefully just a seasonal cold. Thanks for asking after DS he’s still off school, still extremely tired and in pain. GP have given him cocodamol which helps a bit.

DS pressed submit on UCAS form last night and I paid. Presumably the school does something with it now?

We have our mocks timetable, as usual, exams are literally the first days back after Christmas so another holiday with no relaxation. I really wish they would do them before or a few weeks later so they can actually enjoy the break.

estherfrewen · 12/11/2021 07:23

Well DS finally got a ward bed at just after midnight! Yes I would far rather they just got on and removed it if that’s what it is - really don’t want it grumbling away for months. Just one set of mocks which are beginning of December. He has such bad luck with things like this - can’t tell you many things he has missed throughout the years due to last minute injury or illness! Certainly didn’t see this one coming. Just wondering how early I can ring the ward…..!

Monkey2001 · 12/11/2021 07:35

@estherfrewen wards are staffed 24 hours, I think you can call any time.

BlueMarigold · 12/11/2021 07:36

Sending get well wishes to your DS @estherfrewen Flowers

estherfrewen · 12/11/2021 07:38

Thanks - yes just rung now. He is where he said he was and they said he's fine and is on antibiotics and they're assessing this morning. Only one person can visit for 1/2 hour - stupid covid!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 07:58

Hi all,

DM died on Weds morn. She was peaceful after suffering so much with various illnesses over the years (arthritis, depression, dementia). There was a stage of terminal agitation and active dying which was hard to deal with, but at the beginning of this week she was just quiet and sleeping until the end. Which was the best we hoped for. Dd is so upset and now scared it will happen to other members of family Sad.

Anyway, all that to say I'll start a new thread in a minute to save forgetting over the weekend! Thank you @singingstones for the incredible list. Do carry on with this one all.. until it runs out.

That is so tough! At least it means the ward should be quiet and he can hopefully catch up on some of the missed sleep.

Decorhate · 12/11/2021 08:17

@estherfrewen Yes the visiting restrictions are still tough (though understandable). Dh was in hospital last week and was also only allowed one visitor for a set period of time, which had to be prearranged. I hope your Ds does get it sorted.

BlueMarigold · 12/11/2021 08:17

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail sending lots of love Flowers
