Thread 22 Covid Cohort - Creeping towards the Future - Personal Statements and Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Oh just read your update just. OUCH!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 16:46

Thanks piggy that about sums it up! Grin

The driving off gently is literally just trying it a billion times and having the patience of a saint. I found that making DS wear lightweight trainers helped him feel the pedals a bit more (until he was used to it) and to get him to recognise that biting point. It's also not pulling off the clutch too quickly, make them do it by millimetres. I remember weeks in DS moaning how it was impossible and he wanted an automatic, now it's second nature (even if though he failed his test!) . Good luck with it and stay calm.

EwwSprouts · 09/11/2021 17:00

Zitti a huge step. Well done to her.

Wheresthebeach · 09/11/2021 17:02

Oh gosh @JustHereWithMyPopcorn a fractured jaw? That's going to be painful for a while.

With the concussion will he be able to put off the exam? Seems a good enough reason to me!

EwwSprouts · 09/11/2021 17:05

Congrats to Fruitygal DD, she's having a storming day.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn That sounds nasty. Pleased the scan was clear. Fingers crossed as a teen he heals quickly.

Wheresthebeach · 09/11/2021 17:15

And phew...Southampton have emailed confirming if DD doesn't make the grade for Masters, she will automatically be offered the BA during confirmation/clearing. So not an official dual offer, but it means DD will leave the application as it is as she has the predicted grades needed and had always planned to do a Masters but thought she'd apply after first year. @EwwSprouts and @Heifer thanks for the info. Was pleased with how quickly they responded, and DD very happy.

Now to put it all out of my mind (ha!) for a good couple of weeks while the applications are all processed.

@Wheresthebeach, that is great - a Firm and Insurance all in one!

@Monkey2001Grin Brilliant way to think of it!

ealingwestmum · 09/11/2021 17:22

I love hearing about unis that are super efficient with their admin, takes away so much stress from students and parents. Well done Southampton.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/11/2021 17:30

Hi all, just in a dreadful waiting game with DM at the moment thanks for the thoughts x

Anyone else applying to Sussex? Dd had an email where they claimed to have lowered their offers for our "covid cohort" by one or two grades. The website for her course says ABB to BBB. I'm pretty sure that is actually the same as we've seen before covid. (Suspicous of marketing ploy)

I'm not sure if anyone can help with this query but am I right in thinking that if an english student applied to Edinburgh for nursing they would not get the NHS bursary from either England or Scotland? Thanks

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 17:33

@Wheresthebeach

Oh gosh *@JustHereWithMyPopcorn* a fractured jaw? That's going to be painful for a while.

With the concussion will he be able to put off the exam? Seems a good enough reason to me!

He's already moved it once, I'm loathe to do it again as he has mocks coming up too.
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 17:34

Great news on the offers @Wheresthebeach, we still haven't sent off so I'm finding it interesting to see offers coming thick and fast but no-oone seems to have interviews? Is this the norm now or is it because they have excellent predictions?

Oblomov21 · 09/11/2021 17:37

Well done Zitti and Fruity. 🚗
Ouch Popcorn.

Oblomov21 · 09/11/2021 17:40

That is good Beach.

Southampton emailed ds today to offer
Post-Offer Applicant Visit Day, beginning of May 22.

crazycrofter · 09/11/2021 17:44

@Knickerthief1 that’s certainly the case when an English student does nursing in Wales as I looked into it for dd - so I assume it would be the same for Scotland. If you study in Wales and commit to working there for 2 years you can have your fees paid - but the student finance for maintenance is also different. It’s better in that a small bit is a grant but for dd, overall we’d have to top her up more than we would in England. We thought long and hard about it but we weren’t keen on her being tied to working in Wales.

Sorry to hear about the broken jaw @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, that sounds awful. Well done to @Fruitygal dd! And good to hear about lots of offers.

crazycrofter · 09/11/2021 17:44

That’s quite late for an offer day @Oblomov21. I was hoping they’ll have all made their decisions by then!

Wheresthebeach · 09/11/2021 17:45

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn - The only time DSD had an interview was for Oxford. I think for most of us there are no interviews so it's just a matter of processing the offers.

So now we wait, fingers crossed, trying not to expect anything too soon. Plymouth said it would be a couple of days, which rather got our hopes up for an early answer. We've now decided to ignore what was said at the open day and assume a good few weeks of waiting.

Wheresthebeach · 09/11/2021 17:47

@Oblomov21 May 22nd? Gosh...isn't that a bit close to A level exams?

Congrats on the offer!

Oblomov21 · 09/11/2021 17:51

When do visit days normally happen then? Much earlier?

Oblomov21 · 09/11/2021 17:53

No, it's the first week of May 2022. Are you all expecting visit days to be in February March and April then?

When are you expecting dc to make their final 2 choices? Firm and insurance?

Seeline · 09/11/2021 17:57

DSs offer holder days were all early March. He made his decision by the middle of the month.

Seeline · 09/11/2021 17:59

DDs school are telling them not to firm anything until after mocks which are straight after February half term.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 18:04

The LNAT results don't get released until February (I think) so DS has to wait until then to know if he as an offer from his top two choices.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/11/2021 18:09

@Piggywaspushed I tried teaching Ds2 on our long drive how to pull away. I found it so difficult to teach him. So ds1 took him up and down the drive. I don't know what he said, but Ds2 said his brother was much more helpful. Then I took him up our road, ds1 wasnt old enough to sit beside him on the road. It was a nightmare, he found it so difficult. I think the chunky trainers didn't help.
