OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Seeline · 09/11/2021 12:36

Oh congratulations @Fruitygal!!

ZittiEBuoni · 09/11/2021 12:40

Nice one, fruitygal.

Thanks for kind words, everyone - we've two more to go, Thursday and Friday, so keeping my fingers crossed for those.

Nard75 · 09/11/2021 12:45

Congratulations to @Fruitygal DD

Monkey2001 · 09/11/2021 12:59

Congratulations @Fruitygal and @ZittiEBuoni, this thread is very busy today!

@ealingwestmum accom policies vary. At some it makes no difference whether insurance or firm (eg St Andrews, Manchester, Newcastle). Others firm offer holders can secure accom (Sheffield, Nottingham).

Wheresthebeach · 09/11/2021 13:00

@Fruitygal Well done to your DD

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/11/2021 13:07

Fabulous news, Zitti and Fruity!
Woolly hats all round!

Thanks for the video, singing, and Monkey, I’m with you - no point putting a low grade insurance if you wouldn’t choose to go there.

ealingwestmum · 09/11/2021 13:07

Lovely news Friutygal!

Thanks Monkey, that’s useful to know.

BlueMarigold · 09/11/2021 13:08

Congratulations @Fruitygal that’s brilliant!

estherfrewen · 09/11/2021 13:15

Fab news @ZittiEBuoni and @Fruitygal!

Shimy · 09/11/2021 13:43

Congrats @Fruitygal. What a terrific boost!

stoneysongs · 09/11/2021 13:44

That is great news @ZittiEBuoni, well done to her. And to @Fruitygal jr also!

AnneOfCleavage · 09/11/2021 13:48

That's lovely news Zitti - DD is a sucker for a Woolley hat too Grin
Re singing, DD is more musical theatre orientated so her grades have only been LAMDA MT singing exams. She's long stopped now as teacher left and she didn't find a new one. Got to grade 5 so none of them count as UCAS points. She's also dances but again hasn't done high enough grades to use for points either as only started dancing aged 12.

Thank you so much for that video clip singings that was so useful and I will show DD later as it makes perfect sense. She has an open day next weekend for her fave Uni so we'll see if she likes it as much in the flesh as on paper.

Congrats on DD passing her driving test Fruitygal, that's awesome 👏👏🚗

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 14:17

Fab news for your DDs zitti and fruitygal so nice to hear positive news.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 14:22

In the Popcorn household I have a DS with a fractured jaw and a concussion due to using his phone while going down some steps - a lesson for us all there probably! I'm a little concerned as four days on he still has a permanent headache, constant tiredness and an inability to concentrate and focus properly - more than a normal teen boy! They have done a CT so I know it's not serious but he has his LNAT next week and from what I have read this could go on for weeks. I sent him to school today as I didn't want him to miss any more work this term but he said he sat through his Eng lesson and then realised he hadn't taken in anything about what they were discussing. Eeek!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 14:23

He's been in bed for the last hour as he's so tired.

ZittiEBuoni · 09/11/2021 14:45

Oh no, JustHereWithMyPopcorn, ouch! I hope he's well on the way to recovery. (And I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often...)

Monkey2001 · 09/11/2021 14:58

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn that sounds awful, hope he recovers soon. It is so annoying when you have an accident like that because you feel cross with yourself in addition to the pain!

ealingwestmum · 09/11/2021 14:59

Sleep’s just what he probably needs right now Justhere.

Fruitygal · 09/11/2021 15:11

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn if he’s still not right four days later I’d be phoning the GP - just to be on the safe side.

Thanks to you all for best wishes for DD - she’s just texted me in her free to say she got 100% in an economics test and her economics essay was 96% so she’s having a fabulous day!

In terms of putting favourite first when you get to choose. Remember you’ll get first dibs of accommodation if it’s your firm but not all insurance choices will let you pick accommodation until results day - and this makes it stressful - both DSs got their second choices - one had no accommodation left so was in private halls = super expensive and 50 week contract and other didn’t get any his 4 preferred options so in a halls he didn’t like but still quite expensive.

Fiddlersgreen · 09/11/2021 15:40

Great news @Fruitygal and @ZittiEBuoni!!

That’s good to know about accommodation when it comes to firm and insurance. I will need to check which if DS choices will confirm accommodation for an insurance choice.
How stressful trying to find somewhere to live if you end up with your 2nd choice!!

Fruitygal · 09/11/2021 15:44

@Fiddlersgreen some places will let firm and insurance book but others won’t. Big tip be around at home on results day and have the next day free so they are around if it’s a second choice or clearing that you end up with. DD wants to go to a concert in London on the day after results but luckily not until 5pm so said it was ok to book

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/11/2021 16:09

Thanks all, I have made an appointment for a telephone consultation with the GP this evening (cant get a face to face for love nor money!) I'm a bit worried that the hospital won't have sent anything through to them yet as he was only discharged in the early hours o yesterday morning. It's all very, very slow round her with correspondence from the NHS.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/11/2021 16:13

@Fruitygal congrats to dd. it's great when they can go off driving alone.

Ds only wants to go to Sussex, so will firm them if they offer. He will need an insurance though. Sussex are asking ABB on their website. Not sure whether offers will be lower if firmed (all ds1's offers were lower if he firmed them) but not many universities have lower than ABB in his subject, so not sure what will happen there.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2021 16:35

Well, I just tried to teach DS how to start a car and drive off gently. Stalled five times. I have no idea how this gets'taught'! Gave up for fear of damaging my little car!
