We don't need novelty titles - the support on this thread speaks for itself.

HesMyLobster · 16/09/2018 12:56

Thankyou Kitten, perfect title I think! Sounds friendly, warm and cosy - which is exactly what this thread is to me now!

I'm here. Nice thread, thanks kitten

Bakeandyarn · 16/09/2018 15:17

I’m in

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 16:31

I'm dryingcleaning ds's clothes that he left behind.
I've found the corduroy trousers and the warm underlayer jumper he was looking for. I may send them but that might be a feat of organisation too far, at this stage (I am literally surrounded by bags and bags of teenage detritus, swopping over the brothers' rooms)
His Batman posters look very lonely on the walls. Not quite right for ds2, whose now has his room.
rice pudding is my only friend. I bought some for dd's packed lunches, and have resorted to eating it on the sofa.

Newly assembled Hemnes whitewash Wardrobe looks delightful in the new "guest room" (the boxroom)

Lucycat · 16/09/2018 17:32

Hullo everyone- marking my spot on here. TWO MORE WEEKS to go here! DD has had a few jitters but I think it's just because all of her friends are going away now and she's stuck trying to read Bleak House before she goes. 😂

Knittinganewme · 16/09/2018 17:51

I've been running the catering support hotline. They have chopping boards (I sent those) but no knives because they were being taken by someone else and never made it. That's the onion out then. The pans are individual sized which is fine but not when you agreed that you were going to be cooking together. It is Sunday and the homeware shops are shut. I have given up and advised the cancellation of dinner or at least its replacement with Tesco lasagne.

captainoftheshipwreck · 16/09/2018 17:57

hello Grin

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 18:04

ha! Knitting Smile
no comunication over cooking equipment whatsoever from ds with his flatmates, I did mention it to the other mother there in an unguarded moment but she looked blank so clearly no expectation of sharing equipment.
I sent ds in with a pyrex lasagne dish and a roasting tin. Normal sizes. Except he cannot actually make roasts or lasagne - maybe someone else will be able to...Hmm
He has 6 knives. Yay!

Downeyhouse · 16/09/2018 18:06

Can just picture it all knitting!

We have had a “getting ready” day.

Sorting through clothes and pairing socks.
I suspect I will have to bring back half of ds clothes as his room looks small on the Uni video of their hall.

We leave on Thursday am, coming over via the Eurotunnel and then staying 2 nights with family in the south of England before heading to Nottingham on Saturday.

Shanghai good luck with your travels - I hope you manage to avoid any turbulence from the typhoon in your part of the world.

Bakeandyarn · 16/09/2018 18:19

lucycat two more weeks here too and most of DS’s friends have either gone this weekend or are going next weekend, including his gf. We had a day at university yesterday which was really useful. He has lots of reading too.

Not Bleak House though but I LOVE that book! The BBC adaptation is really good but definitely read it first!

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 18:24

downey the clothes storage was really small in what is meant to be a larger room.
I also realised that the more clothes the more likelhood of dirty clothes piling up, at least fewer clothes is an incentive to do a weekly wash. For the same reason I only sent in one duvet cover and one set of pillowcases.
Notts will be cold, I'd think about wool or fleece layers rather than bulky cotton hoodies or sweatshirts. The same with jeans, ds has too many pairs, he should have taken a pair of tracksuit bottoms that were everyday wear, and a pair of warmer wintery trousers, the sort you can walk in over the moors (okay he isn't near any moors but still) Socks/underpants you can buy easily but expensive anoraks and jumpers are less likely to be purchased even by the most stylish student. I'm looking at the clothes he left behind and I don't think he needs any of them extra, apart from the merino jumper and the cords.[so much for getting his possessions out of my house]

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 18:26

I love Bleak House too. I loved the backstory in Dickensian. The baby that turns out to be Esther and Lady Deadlock's relationship with her sister.

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 18:29

I think a Large Pasta Pot is the one thing that no-one thinks to bring/borrow.

Downeyhouse · 16/09/2018 18:38

Thanks for the thoughts of clothes Nettles.

He has never worn school uniform and the weather is colder where we live than the UK so he has quite a lot of good quality winter clothes.

He is doing geography and will be off on a trip in November involving hiking on the moors! So we are digging out hiking gear too.

I also agree about not taking too many clothes so he has to wash them!!! Hopefully the lack of storage will mean he has to ruthlessly cut them down.

He loves his sport and has a lot of sports wear which we are hoping can go in under the bed boxes we have bought.

Time will tell.

Nearly all of ds mates are gone now including hair best buddy who has lost his voice through too much singing last night :)

PandaG · 16/09/2018 18:38

Marking my place here too!

We had students back from church for lunch today - discovered that one of the fresher's parents had both come here to university, as did I, and I knew them! So weird! I've been through my photo albums since and found a photo of her mum from 28 years ago!

Bakeandyarn · 16/09/2018 18:47

nettleskeins I know what you mean, I loved the backstory, it was so sad. Im trying to persuade DD, who is 15 and working her way through various classics, to give Dickens a go, but she is stubbornly resisting!

flatmouse · 16/09/2018 19:04

New home Smile
Dropped DS today. Lots of running around. Student helpers to unload car. Room all sorted, so pleased I bought wardrobe hanger thing. He now needs a couple of those over door hooks as he has no hooks for coats or dressing gown.
We didn't meet other flatmates although he did. Being one of the later ones to arrive he has the salad drawer in fridge instead of a shelf, it they'll sort that out between them. Cupboard space in kitchen could be better but it stops them hoarding!
Went for lunch in town once room/inventory/internet connectivity sorted, so said goodbye there. Admit to being a little teary but not too bad!
He was planning on chilling on bed, FaceTiming mates then getting to know flat mates before first big freshers party tonight.

flatmouse · 16/09/2018 19:06

Oh and first thing he was asked by flatmates... "have you got a toaster"?
Guess they can all put a couple of quid in and get one from Argos.

Nettleskeins · 16/09/2018 19:43

ds halls say: don't bring a cheap toaster because it will fuse your flat. For this reason they supply a heavy duty one.

Knittinganewme · 16/09/2018 20:14

The over the door hooks I bought didn't come close to fitting over the doors. I didn't expect the door to the bathroom to be as thick as the one into the hall, the door hooks would fit on neither. I expected the hall door to be a fire door but the bathroom door was a suprise.

The Great Knife Crisis was averted just as DS was on his way out to buy lasagne. Today's arriving flatmate had brought the knives. They are all in now so anything they don't have they will have to sort out between them.

Petalflowers · 16/09/2018 20:58

Hello new thread. Thank you Kitten for sorting us out again,

Was FaceTiming DC earlier and being a mum, got talking about what he was eating. He said he was going shopping later and said ‘i’ve Made a mealplan’ So I know what to buy. Stupidly I felt proud of this. I asked what was on it, and amongst the pizza and sausages was chicken stir fry and sphag Bol, and mash (tomgo with sausages), somhe does I tend to do some home cooking then! The only fruit were strawberries, so I suggested grapes as well. (He’s not an apple eater).

I recommend FaceTiming as it’s free and they can show you things. They seem closer than just phoning somehow.

Downey - have a safe journey
