They've left college, now we are trying not to think about a certain date.

As nettleskeins says - it's residency not passport that counts: 3 years in Scotland/the EU (but not England, Wales or NI) before starting the Uni course to get the lower fees/have them paid by SAAS.

Also coming to Scotland just for the purposes of education (eg boarding school) doesn't count for the 3 years Confused

We also have a different system of loans: different income thresholds and different amounts paid out, a different interest rate (only 1.5% Smile) - but also have to start paying it back at much lower income thresholds.

Nettleskeins · 13/08/2018 22:30

kitten no chance that you saw the Lord of the Rings scene last night where Frodo and the other hobbits hid from the 9 Kings (?) and there were feathers everywhere?

we could have a craft challenge.
Christmas runners. Nothing to do with A levels at all. Welcoming them back from their first term..first school free season.
The best Christmas Runner to be completed in two days. Pictures to be posted here. I have located some gold lace. whilst throwing things out.

or, read a book in two days, review on Wed eve. Smile

Hello everyone! A very well done to Kitten’s DD, a huge hug to Marmite and a friendly wave to everyone else! DD and I have just got back from visiting grandparents since Friday which has been a good distraction from counting the days/hours. They are lovely and were incredibly kind to us both, but also very full on and quite eccentric, which was very absorbing and just what we needed.

DH has now panicked me by saying that a friend of ours told him that last year when their DS was going through this hell, Track had updated and his insurance Uni had changed to unconditional but his firm still said conditional. It was before he had collected his grades so they assumed he had missed his offer for his firm and he got really upset as he hadn’t ever wanted to go to his insurance anyway! Then an hour later his firm updated to unconditional - he had absolutely got in and had got the grades! Is that possible or has something been lost in the telling/translation?

I thought that when track updated it would have both the firm and insurance unis decisions?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/08/2018 22:31

Waves at TheThirdOfHerName. Yes, that's right.

History, Psychology and English Language AS level results, and Welsh bacc waited for.

She's wanting to apply for Ancient History courses, or the ASNAC course at Cambridge, which is her aspirational choice.

She's been on a MAT programme run by Wales that's really encouraged the pupils to consider the higher rated universities. And she won a place on a Cambridge residential, so now really wants to go there.

marmiteloversunite · 13/08/2018 22:32

MRI all done. Appointment on Friday to discuss treatment plans. It was a very weird experience, like lying on a very technical massage bed with cut outs for my boobs. Then listening to Heart FM as dye was pumped into me and a whole cacophony of banging noises for 20 minutes. Radiographers were lovely but I'm glad that's done.

Could really do with good results for DD and her place being confirmed on Thursday. Would be nice to have some good news this week.

I've been looking at clearing just in case and I too wondered why the grades still seem really high? Am I just looking at the wrong unis?

Nettles your multiple posts made me smile. Thought I had lost the plot when I kept reading the same things over and over!

Sweet dreams everyone!Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2018 22:39

That does sound like an odd experience marmite, I hope you sleep well tonight.

That sounds really cool DrM :) good luck to your dd.

Yippee if the firm is slow to update that can happen. If it still shows conditional it's all to play for.

Nettle I didn't, nice thought though :) I think I will try and do some crafting this autumn.

Thank you Kitten. Every time I think I’ve got the hang of this, something else crops up that I hadn’t thought of to unnerve me!

Well done Marmite, glad you’ve got through your day in one piece, a warm well done to you.

Hope you all sleep well and looking forward to sharing tomorrow with you Flowers

YippeeTeenager · 13/08/2018 22:51

Kitten! Not RESULTS DAY as the new thread title! Really wish I hadn’t seen that just before I turn the lights off....serves me right for peeking.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2018 22:52

I'm so sorry, I should have put a trigger warning on it Grin

Ok so this has to stop. I’ve got used to the clearing ads but I just got one for silk boxers with air holes. I mean seriously wtaf.

Wouldn’t it be good if there was a clearing tool where you could put in possible (or actual) grades and it threw up a perfect list? Better of course would have been a choice of unconditionals like the Scottish students get, but then we would have to accept their capped numbers too.

Too much to think, and a heavy day at work tomorrow...

HardwickWhite · 13/08/2018 22:55

Marmite I am glad you have got that out of the way. Fingers crossed now.

TheThirdOfHerName · 13/08/2018 22:55

HardwickWhite earlier this summer I was getting targeted ads for AQA markers. I'm not even a teacher.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2018 22:59

It would be really good if clearing were more finely tuned.

Am off to bed. Sweet dreams all, watch out for bed bugs,

Shamelessly placemarking from France so I can keep the thread.

Someone tell me why the hell I came here with three leavers to get away from the stress, I was a fool....

Knittinganewme · 13/08/2018 23:15

Marmite well that part is over with and I hope the rest of the week makes up for it.

Clearing - my sample is of one course. I know that the standard offer is AAB, I know that it was in clearing last year at AAB and I know that it's there this year at AAB. I assume that they just run it under numbers every year OR they are hoping to pick people up on adjustment. That's the other angle, there will be people who have exceeded their predictions and have the possibility of trading up.

My cabinet has still not fallen down and I've finished off the bottle of wine. I've not had a drink in months seeing as I have no-one to be social with and two glasses of red last night gave me the best night's sleep I've had in months (that and the rain making it cooler).

Hello to all those joining us for the first time on the waiting bench, there's still plenty of room for anyone else who is lurking.

Knittinganewme · 13/08/2018 23:20

Waves at MrSlant, it seems to have been a while since I saw you.

I was wishing I'd booked a holiday this week but the rest of the week is sorted now as the new World of Warcraft expansion came out 17 minutes ago. I even took MIL shopping today rather than tomorrow so I could spend some quality time tomorrow with DS.

lashingsofgingerbeer · 13/08/2018 23:45

Marmite glad to hear your scan is all done & hope you get some good sleep tonight too. Knitting good to hear you've been partaking of the vino & have WOW to look forward to - good for you! Nettles you scared me too there for a minute as thought I'd totally lost the plot until you explained reason behind multiple postings! Grin Tomorrow I am meeting up with a good friend for lunch - a very lovely & welcome distraction, although having been through this 5 times herself, we will no doubt be discussing at length! However did she remain sane??!

prettybird · 13/08/2018 23:50

Hardwick - remember that the majority of Scottish students already have their entry requirements (or close to them) before they apply because they're based on the Scottish Highers (which are usually sat in S5 - the equivalent of Lower 6th).

S6 is usually for Advanced Highers (A level equivalent) for interest/English Unis/Medicine/Vet Science and maybe some extra Highers (some for interest, some re-sits). The Unis actually prefer to see a diet of 5 Highers sat in S5 and look at those results rather than any re-sits or additional Highers in S6 (or then require even more UCAS points Hmm).

It's not as easy an option as you might think! Grin

Because the Scottish degrees are 4 years, they assume that you haven't done S6, as in theory you could have gone to Uni after S5. I did that many many Blush years ago but it's less common now just as well as ID checking is much more strict Wink. One of ds' friends went off to Edinburgh Uni last year after S5, but the majority of his friends did S6 (I think one - who had 5 x As - might've taken a gap year).

HesMyLobster · 14/08/2018 03:36

Anybody else in the results induced insomnia club tonight?!
Not even gin helped! I'm just resigned to it now.
The Scottish system sounds complicated - but perhaps that's just to my poor sleep deprived brain!?

Welcome back Boop- I remember seeing your name before on here, and even way back on the GCSE threads.

DD has been offered an extra bar shift at work on Thursday night! She was told they need extra staff because it's A level results night and the pub will be full of 18 year olds celebrating. Apparently it didn't occur to her manager that she was one of those 18 year olds! Hmm
Anyway she's accepted - said she'd rather work than face the dilemma of who to go out with (things are still frosty with the flaky best friend) and that she doesn't think she'll have anything to celebrate anyway Confused but I think she may regret that decision when it comes to Thursday.
Her choice of course, but her whole day is now packed solid with dancing all day and then work in the evening - I'm beginning to think I should make some plans of my own!

I deliberately kept the day completely free so I'd be there to help if she needs me, but looks like I'll be twiddling my thumbs.

GnomeDePlume · 14/08/2018 03:55

DD2 applied to Glasgow and got very confusing funding information as, though we live in England now, we lived in the Netherlands for 5 years some years ago. In the event she firmed and insured elsewhere.

DD2 is trying to get her sleeping pattern back on track in time for TDWCBM (excuse the pun). Wish I could manage the same. Sat downstairs with the dog snoring on the sofa and the cat sat on the mat (being ironic).

Had a serious talk with DD2 about the perils of Freshers Week. Especially the risks of going out with new found friends who she doesnt really know and who dont know her. She cant assume that these new friends will have her back the way her long seasoned school friends do. Our advice was to have fun but be cautious.

Gave her the advice to be very wary of older students who prey on freshers - they can seem very sophisticated and grown up but can be predatory.

She is more worried about some of her friends. DD2 often ends up as the 'mother hen' making sure friends get home safely with some shreds of dignity intact after a big night out.

GnomeDePlume · 14/08/2018 03:57

Hello Lobster!

HesMyLobster · 14/08/2018 04:35

Hi Gnome!
I'm about to give up and put the kettle on - do you want a brew?!

Downeyhouse · 14/08/2018 04:44
