They've left college, now we are trying not to think about a certain date.

I think Mamalade are a stand alone insurance.

Funnily enough, I have jsut cancelled dc off my car insurance, as he won’t be driving the car once he leaves (and is moving away for a higher apprenticeship, so,won’t be home for holidays etc). I’m going to get a £50 refund. Also just realised renewed my house insurance and got a cheaper quote, so a few pounds saved there also.

Anyone getting contents insurance for their dcs?

TheThirdOfHerName · 13/08/2018 18:13

Anyone getting contents insurance for their dcs?

The universities DS1 might go to both have contents insurance (Endsleigh) included in the accommodation package.

The only valuable item he will own is a new laptop (partially funded from DSA). He needs to arrange and pay for insurance, then he can claim back the cost of the insurance from DSA general allowance.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2018 18:15

Contents insurance will depend on which uni dd goes to.

Welcome BOOP :)

Two sleeps to go (cos I don't think we can count Wednesday as a sleeping night!)

Gin all round.

No , all the house insurance we've had has student cover, 5k or 10k living away from home.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 13/08/2018 18:20

Congratulations to Kitten's dd!
Frustratingly for ds he failed his driving test today and there are no more slots available till after he theoretically leaves to go to uni. Very fed up and disappointed boy, it was his third attempt.

Nettleskeins · 13/08/2018 18:23

awesome I love the idea of old washing machines hidden away under your bed Shock

I've managed to get a lot of stuff into the storage unit (which is half the size of a small garden shed) Very heavy work. tugging great sacks through fire doors in industrial warehouse on those pull you only trollies. dd helped me. ds1 attempted to stop me storing a pile of Empire Magazines, and then was relieved at the thought of getting them out of his room.

I can see the floor in the hall now and in the tv room. I'm looking forward to sweeping and mopping it. I also took an old office chair to the tip.

apropos Sixth Form Dress Code. dd is not allowed any jeans or denim, or any skinny trousers, or tapered trousers, any lycra, any patterns, any hoods, any dm shoes, and has to wear skirt to knee or non-tapered non jean trousers. Quite strict. But colours are allowed.

Nettleskeins · 13/08/2018 18:30

Kitten what good news about driving, and Scnauzer he'll get there in the end, at least he is getting plenty of practice and will be all the safer for it.

Another day over. Nearly there. two more days.
Ds1's school opens at 8am. I never gave any thankyou cards or presents, now might be a good time. Ds left under rather a cloud, but I feel it would be good to now show some appreciation of the fact that they put up with him and he took the exams at all.

Still no news about the Grade 8 exam. Very frustrating, as I think it was part of the conditions of the Unconditional ifysim. And we will only find out on the morning.

Nettleskeins · 13/08/2018 18:42

Lobster glad your dds back safely, you must be very proud of them.

I'm dreading the school bit. ds has been so secretive about everyone else in school and what their plans are, and I know none of the other parents in his year, except, it feels a lonely experience to go in and ALSO feel that ds has let the teachers down. It would be so nice to just shake their hands and say thank you and not feel any ambivalence/if only sort of emotions. It was tough getting him through and the school made a few misjudgements, mostly due to the bureaucratic system, how could they not with so many students to manage and supervise? Anyway, I want to end on a good note. So trying to work on that aspect, whatever ds gets, and help him stand tall.

Bakeandyarn · 13/08/2018 19:13

leia can he get a short notice test cancellation, that’s what we did. You can usually book one within the next three days, DS turned up for his test and there were three candidates but only two examiners, they decided to cancel one at random and he was the unlucky one! He was given a new date eight weeks away so looked for a short notice one when he got home. He got one within three days and passed. It’s a long and expensive wait otherwise!

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/08/2018 19:18

Nettle, the washing machine was hidden in the shed. We did have 2 full, dismantled double beds under the bed as well as the dismantled cot. Now they've gone I'll be able to actually store stuff we want under there!

Leia how disappointing for your ds. I took 4 attempts to pass my test, and the one I passed was a short notice cancellation, so definitely keep trying to get a cancellation.

flatmouse · 13/08/2018 19:22

Well done kitten did, and commiserations to leia ds. DS taking his tomorrow!

I tend to spend early hours of the morning calculating points totals dependant on potential grades! So many permutations!

Useful guide on which? university online about what to say to universities when you ring them and how to/not to answer questions.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/08/2018 19:22

I'll be thinking of you and your DS on Thursday Nettleskins. As I will of all our DC of course.

UrsulaPandress · 13/08/2018 19:41

Well you lot have been busy. We are going to need a results thread if there are anymore bad dreams.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 13/08/2018 19:49

Thanks everyone for the kind words. How does he go about finding a short notice test, is it just frequent checking of the website?

Bakeandyarn · 13/08/2018 19:59

leia Yes, keep checking, I think there is an option to click for tests in the next theee days. It’s worth keeping on checking, the first time DS looked there was nothing but 15 minutes later there was one available. The other bonus is, they don’t have time to get too nervous!

LeiatheSchnauzer · 13/08/2018 20:07

Thank you Bakeandyarn, I've passed that on to him!

raspberryrippleicecream · 13/08/2018 20:22

Goodness what a lot to catch up on.

My two both had short cancellations, the hard part was checking with the instructor for availability. DS1's instructor told him to check every time he had a couple of minutes. He retook 2 weeks to the day, which was the earliest you could retake. DD was V similar.

DD's sixth form was very casual, nothing very short or logos that would cause offence, and no ripped jeans (which was quite hard).

Marmite thinking about you Flowers.

DD is working hard, and has requested an extra shift tomorrow. We have managed a short conversation. She had assumed we were coming to school to get results, or at least nearby. She is hoping for good enough grades to access a course she would like in clearing, otherwise will talk to school about resit and try again next year.

I have no interesting dreams to offer, though I'm another member of the sleepless nights club

raspberryrippleicecream · 13/08/2018 20:26

Congratulations to Kitten's DD, and the other DC who passed recently. Commiserations to those who didn't. They will all get there!

Knitting am very impressed with your cabinet and Flowers.

DD has impressed me greatly this week, she had a couple of nights on her own at home with 5.00 am starts at work and successfully managed to wake up, and get up on time!. (Two alarms first night, 3 alarms the second)

Knittinganewme · 13/08/2018 20:31

College have a policy of no ripped jeans but obviously don't enforce it at all because that's all I see when I've been waiting to pick him up.

Contents insurance is included in the rent (as it should be at that price) plus he has cover for single items away from home of £2k on my home insurance.

We are researching ice cream vendors for Thursday afternoon as I need something to look forward to, ideally covered with cream and fruit.

GnomeDePlume · 13/08/2018 20:34

BitOutOfPractice I think this is so hard for the students. I think a lot of the bravado is wanting it not to matter when in their hearts they know it does.

The transition out of school is difficult, everything changes. From this time on the 'system' sees them as adults. Nobody will come looking for them if they dont turn up at college, uni, work. Young people can feel cut adrift.

DS has struggled with this. He isnt academic. He knows what he wants to do but is struggling to motivate himself to go out and get it.

Thinking of you and your DD.

chocolateworshipper · 13/08/2018 20:54

Welcome to the new-comers and I think it's welcome back *BOOP? (ignore me if I've made that up)

Congratulations flatmouse's DS

I will be thinking of you all on Thursday. Good luck everyone xxx

flatmouse I've done that with the tariff points. Endless permutations and it never quite added up right.

Until he received his incredibly generously tariffed (is that a word?)Btec subsidiary. And his grade 7 gets him the points he needs which is more than 104. Hmm it doesn't quite seem fair.

Now a clearing question. Why would all the clearing places be the same as the original grades they asked for? I am looking at Glasgow and Oxford Brookes, for Music just out of interest. They don't seem any different than the original offers we were gettting. Is that because people are adjusting up in clearing as well as going down?

I would have thought clearing grades would be lower. At Liverpool the clearing for Music is still an A grade!!!! seems very high. Bangor also ask for very high grades, I think 2 A's including Music.

Or do the grades they want change nearer the date or on the date?
