They've left college, now we are trying not to think about a certain date.

I've bitten the bullet and booked a storage unit for Monday for a year. 35 sq ft. Lack of garage beginning to grate.

Knittinganewme · 12/08/2018 17:46

I have been assembling a bathroom storage unit this afternoon and can recommend flat pack as a distraction. I reached peak swearing when the instructions said "insert drawer into unit". If you know how drawer runners work that might be enough, if you have never given them a moment's thought then what you need is more detailed instruction. Google saved the day again with a video. I have put off adjusting the door for another day, finished is better than perfect.

I was so miserable earlier that I bought wine, biscuits and a dessert. I am really missing my husband this week because he was always the voice of reason. I know that I'm being irrational because DS has a really low offer and he will make it and so I don't really know what it is that I'm worried about.

Flowers knitting

Stopyourhavering64 · 12/08/2018 18:00

Last year Ds got in to a top 25 Uni ( top 5 in Scotland) to study for MA with CCE ( and Welsh Bac), when they'd wanted BBC

UrsulaPandress · 12/08/2018 18:51

Flowers knitting. It is still so raw for you. More wine.

TheThirdOfHerName · 12/08/2018 18:58

Knitting it's because it's one of those events you expected to face together.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2018 18:58

Flowers knitting. It's going to be another really big thing in your life, I'm not surprised you are feeling miserable.

Ursula very wise, I've opened the bottle. TheThird I think you have it right on the nail there, it's another major thing that I'm facing up to on my own.

PandaG · 12/08/2018 19:18

Hugs knitting. Xx

GnomeDePlume · 12/08/2018 19:54

Knittinganewme those pesky instructions! We bought a new trolley for the allotment, the instructions were made up of blurry photocopied thumbnail sized photos with written instructions which had apparently been translated to English using a German/Spanish dictionary. There was a reference to a Part T but no actual Part T!

Nettleskeins · 12/08/2018 20:14

knitting sending you a handhold. I hope we can all be the voice of reason to each other, even if we cannot be reason to ourselves. That was such a lovely virtue of your dh, I'm going to try and be more like that.

Ds2 is now trying to book us onto the Proms (into?onto?upto?) Simultaneously juggling a booking onto Southend Pier for an Away Game. I tried to avoid the actual match (those hard seats, the noise, the drunken oaths) by saying I would sit on the pier till he came out of the football match, but he was having none of it. I worry about you Mum, he said, you might get lost, you'll be better if you stick with me. Blush

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2018 20:17

lol Nettles!

We are heading to the Proms in a couple of weeks, but we queue for the stand up part.

Hobbit - well,done to HobbitJr.

Had a nice weekend away and haven’t really thought about The Big Day.

HardwickWhite · 12/08/2018 22:57

A bit soppy here tonight. All three DDs are at home for the first time since the end of term. A month from now DD1 will be gone if she makes her firm. I am selfishly more worried about that than results if I am
honest. Terrified in fact.

starfleet · 12/08/2018 23:55

WineWineWineWineand ThanksThanksThanks for everyone right now.

Also lots of GinGinGin to help you get through the next few nights.

lashingsofgingerbeer · 13/08/2018 00:38

Knitting big hugs, Flowers & lots of wine tonight - you & your DS have done incredibly well to come this far after the loss of your DH.

Hardwick that's totally understandable!

Tonight I have been writing out a plan of what needs to happen on Results Day morning so I'm on track! As I did it whilst consuming two rather large glasses of wine for support, I may have to check it over tomorrow! Wink DD very on edge - thank god for her summer job to pre-occupy her!

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 00:40

Thanks Starfleet, don't mind if I do! Grin

We've had friends over for dinner tonight - we met when their DD1 and ours were at nursery. This is the first time I think we've ever got together without any of our kids in tow (all at various festivals around the country!)
Obviously there was a lot of reminiscing and "remember whens" but it was also very exciting talking about the future, making plans to visit each of the DD's university cities together once they're settled. Nice to start looking forward to the future beyond Thursday!

Of course, I'll be back to blind panic mode when I wake from a results based nightmare at 4am!!

But for now I'm feeling very serene and "whatever will be will be" (quite possibly the wine talking! GrinWine)

Janus · 13/08/2018 00:41

I can’t sleep for thinking about all this and thought ‘I bet mumsnet has a thread about this’!!
Firstly I’m thinking of the actual day. Dd1 is doing a specific degree and so can only apply to a few unis, got offered a place at all but as she is the first in our family to go to uni she got offered a place in a uni 1.5 hours away with one grade lower than the others. It was her favourite uni so she accepted that place. No point in choosing any other place as she’d actually need higher grades. So everything depends on these grades, there’s no plan b 😱!! We’ve all got our heads around it but just want to know the results now, the wait is torture!
Secondly I’m terrified about her going! She’s only just turned 18 so there’s been no chance for her to go out clubbing etc so probably the first club she’ll end up going is when she’s away. Anyone else in this position? Her 2 best friends still aren’t 18! How am ever going to be able to sleep??!! What if she’s hideously drunk, who will look after her?!
I’m usually pretty relaxed but I’ve got myself in a right state thinking about both these things tonight! Anyone else worried or am I just having a moment and it will pass?!

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 00:43

Just caught up - Knitting so sorry to hear you're feeling sad. I think you're just incredible, you and your DS. Wine is definitely needed and deserved. Thinking of you and sending hugs WineThanks

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 00:45

Janus you have definitely come to the right place! Grin

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 00:49

You are most definitely not alone in any of your worries.
Will keep everything crossed that your DD gets the results she needs, but in the meantime it might be worth looking into clearing, to see if her course or any other for her subject are available, so you can start planning a rough plan b. (I'll try to find a link!)

As to the drinking and clubbing thing - I guess we all just have to hope that they meet a good bunch of friends/flatmates and that they all take care of each other!

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 00:50

Clearing link (just put the name of the course in the search box) Smile

Janus · 13/08/2018 00:56

Thank you both, for replying and it being so late too! Feel like I may be here about the same time for the next few nights!!
We looked at the time when she applied, every uni wanted the exact same grades and she had to have an interview for each one too so I don’t think clearing is an option. We know of someone else doing this degree and missed one A level by a grade but she still got in so I’m trying to keep her calm and positive. She had a little mini breakdown today and had a sob about the wait and that the uni already have her results. At least it’s only a few more days.
And yes, I’ve also said to her you make a pact to all look after each other when out, no one gets left on their own. I may book into a local hotel for freshers fortnight 😂 (seriously that was a joke!!).

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 01:02

Oh gosh, is it medicine? Or vet med? I can't think of anything else that interviews.

HesMyLobster · 13/08/2018 01:02

Ps I've considered the hotel for freshers week too! Wink
