Not the end of the threads, just this chapter of life. We'll keep going, don't worry!

However! Not to be used until this one is done

My DD is off to China on the 29th and by the time she gets back it will nearly be results day. It's a good way to keep her mind off everything!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2018 21:02

Thanks for the warning Gnome.

I was thinking more along the lines of really basic stuff like t shirts and socks and stuff Grin

OP posts:
PandaG · 17/07/2018 21:34

I was thinking we'd top up underwear etc over the summer, but am also happy that we can send stuff next day via amazon prime if needed!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2018 22:20

balls. Just discovered that dh is away for work at the start of dds insurances freshers week. I don't drive for medical reasons. dh refuses to consider it as being an issue. So I guess dd will have to go up by train with me if needed and dh will have to drive up a few days later with the rest of her stuff.

grrr.

Is there any disadvantage in arriving on the Sunday instead of saturday in terms of things like nabbing a shelf in the shared kitchen?

OP posts:
GnomeDePlume · 18/07/2018 05:34

I think it is fairly common for people to arrive over a couple of days. In my extremely limited experience (1!) the kitchen was arranged with separated storage - in DD1's case 1 v. small cupboard per person. Tins & dry goods (cup a soups etc) were kept in rooms. There was one fridge shelf per person.

I will get DD1 to list the things she found useful and the things which were less so.

I made a 'rainy day' box for DD1 and am doing so for DD2. It was a shoe box sized box packed full of things to do when you are bored and have no money. Quiz books, 'just add water' cookie mixes, balloons etc.

That's a lovely idea.

marmiteloversunite · 18/07/2018 07:38

Good idea Gnome. Really helpful to get tips from someone who has done it all before. I was going yes frame some photos for her room and make a scrap book of useful info/ideas eg a bolognaise recipe , her NI no, passport details etc.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2018 08:02

That's good to know Gnome. Phew! I hope it's the same at other places.

Good idea re the scrap book, though if it got stolen, would it be a risk for identity theft?

DS's uni had half the colleges arriving one day and half the next

He got useful boxes off a couple of people. All included bluetac which wasn't allowed. Nice noticeboard pins were good though. He got enough paracetamol for daily hangovers all year!

One useful thing was a little packet of preloaded needles and thread U found in Morrisons. Also stamps.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2018 08:20

hang on while I get my notebook and pen Grin

marmiteloversunite · 18/07/2018 09:02

Yes OYBBK good point. Maybe leave out the personal details of scrapbook. I am so trusting I hadn't even thought of that!

UrsulaPandress · 18/07/2018 09:25

Photos in their phone of important documents can be useful as phones are password protected.

marmiteloversunite · 18/07/2018 09:42

Yes that's a good idea. I am now sitting here wondering what else to put in a rainy day box. Hmm

UrsulaPandress · 18/07/2018 09:48

I am struggling to imagine DD being in need of entertainment. She just watches endless reruns of old tv shows on her phone. Friends. Doctor Who. She is currently watching Friday Night Dinner while applying make up in our tiny hotel room in London.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2018 10:00

In dds useful box I've put in allen keys, screwdrivers, bike repair kit, sewing kit. I'm not having a daughter of mine leaving home without the ability to undertake basic repairs.

I'll have a look later to see what else I've put in there so far.

HesMyLobster · 18/07/2018 10:23

These are all brilliant ideas. I will make a note of them, but not actually do anything yet! Blush
Am I the only one still in denial and refusing to do any planning/buying/preparing until after results day?!

UrsulaPandress · 18/07/2018 11:35

Me neither. Until I know where she is going then I'm hanging fire.

TheThirdOfHerName · 18/07/2018 19:29

I've made DS1 a little 'toolkit' with one of these plus:
Small roll of duct tape.
Small but tough pair of scissors.
Mini sewing kit (free from a hotel).
Some spare batteries for his (extra loud) alarm clock.
Some safety pins.
A mini measuring tape (from a cracker).

Year 13 support thread - The End.
GnomeDePlume · 18/07/2018 19:49

DD1 said a 'useful' box is a good idea. Small tools, the stick up stuff which isn't blutack and doesn't stain, sewing kit, iron on hemming fabric, super glue.

Things which went in the rainy day box:

Quiz book
Balloons
Facepaint
Just add water cookie mix
Bread mix
A face pack
Luxury hair treatment
Colouring pencils
Origami paper and book
Drawing paper
Stickers
Gel pens

I built it up over a few months. It was amazing how much fitted in the box!

Downeyhouse · 18/07/2018 20:15

Thanks for all the ideas!
I remember teaching boys to iron and sew on buttons in halls 30 years ago!
Makes me determined to make sure ds is prepared for life before going.

MrSlant · 19/07/2018 08:44

Ooof, found you all before you filled another thread! Sorry, have gone from being deaf to being perfectly hearing (had the packing out from my operation last week) and it's quite boggling in the sensory processing department. Couldn't consistently MN, I think I'd run out of bandwidth!

DS1 has joined a rowing club that trains nearly every day thank goodness and I think DS2 is on his way to becoming a professional Fortnite player! Last day in school for DS3 tomorrow too, I'm not going to be able to see my house for crumbs.

Hadn't thought about preparing for The Big Move but there's some great ideas on here. Just need to make my brain believe it is actually happening.

derekthe1adyhamster · 19/07/2018 08:51

Gap yah travels have started! He's currently in Tenerife on a dolphin conservation camp. I think he's enjoying it but apparently he was rather nervous before he went (according to his GF) lots of whales, dolphins and lizards! He's been on a boat trip, done kayaking and coastal surveying, and today will be beach cleaning. He won't be doing extended travels (can't afford it) but hopefully he'll earn enough to have a month or two in Belize next year. One of the leaders did her marine biology degree at Bangor so I think DS has picked her brains (she loved it)
I'm totally ignoring A levels, and concentrating on DS2 who needs to choose A level courses Grin

catslife · 19/07/2018 10:53

Been lurking as most of the recent posts haven't been that relevant for dcs not going to uni. But wanted to sign back in before this thread becomes too full.
After getting nowhere with the "apply for any job" route encouraged dd to start applying for local apprenticeships and she has started having interviews. So hopefully something more definite will happen soon.
We have been going through her wardrobe and buying some outfits that would be more suitable for work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2018 12:18

Good luck to your dd catslife, getting interviews is a really good way through the process.
