Not the end of the threads, just this chapter of life. We'll keep going, don't worry!

However! Not to be used until this one is done

Nettleskeins how very frustrating!is there any way he can reject that accomodation and get one of his other choices.
DD is currently struggling to both save and go out clubbing with a her mates on a semi regular basis, she needs to buy a laptop!

Nettleskeins · 15/07/2018 17:55

he promises he is going to see the accommodation finally tomorrow and then hopefully he will realise it is not that near the campus, and put his name down for something cheaper and nastier on campus. So far our advice has been rejected, I think until he visits he won't understand what we have been talking about...if on the other hand he really loves the area it is in, well then that is his lookout to stump up the difference through his bills/entertaining budget. Tbh it is not so much the money, it is just the fact that he hasn't understood the demographic. Anyway, what do I know Grin as he keeps telling me.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 15/07/2018 21:17

nettles hopefully reality will click in.

Dd and I are off to her first choice university tomorrow. She is doing their ASD transition course and we also have appointments with disability services and accommodation lined up. I will be staying with my Mum and meeting up with a friend I haven't seen for about 10 years.

Downeyhouse · 16/07/2018 06:27

Nohaud my younger ds (14) has ASD. Is it common for unis to offer a transition course? Or are certain unis more on tjr ball with this.

Just thinking (far) ahead for ds as think such a programme could really help him manage the change when it Comes.

UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 17:20

Those who are getting accommodation confirmed, have your DC got unconditional offers?

GnomeDePlume · 16/07/2018 17:29

DD2 has accommodation confirmed for her conditional firm choice. At this stage it isnt final and no money has changed hands. As I remember from DD1's first year once the uni place is confirmed then the accommodation place is formally booked (and money changes hands). At this stage DD2 knows which flat she will be in and who the other people in the flat will be if all goes to plan for everyone.

For DD2's insurance place she has put down her 7 accommodation choices in order of preference.

Not sure what will happen re accommodation if DD2 ends up in clearing. She has constructed a huge spreadsheet with courses and permutations depending on which subject she falls down on.

Only a month to go until A level results are published!

UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 19:07

Dds insurance has not mentioned accommodation. But neither has her firm other then telling her to submit her preferences.

Should I be concerned?

marmiteloversunite · 16/07/2018 20:05

Ursula we haven't heard anything about accommodation apart from the fact that they have received the application. I was presuming that nothing would happen until results day?!

UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 20:10

There just seem to be so many people confident of where their DC are going.

marmiteloversunite · 16/07/2018 20:35

Don't worry. I'm with you! Not 100% confident just 100% optimistic!Grin

Knittinganewme · 16/07/2018 21:12

I'm pretty optimistic seeing as DS needs an E but it's still a conditional offer and so I don't expect that he'll be hearing anything about accommodation until after results day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/07/2018 21:25

I'm just not thinking about it.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 21:30

We can't influence it now. The dye is cast.

UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 21:31

Or die even Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/07/2018 21:33

Grin chucks dylon about the thread.

UrsulaPandress · 16/07/2018 21:35

We'll all be tie-dyed.

GnomeDePlume · 16/07/2018 21:37

I think it depends on the uni. Sheffield, DD2's firm, seems to be quite organised. UEA (DD2's insurance) only sent out the accommodation application a couple of weeks ago.

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/07/2018 21:57

Ds1's uni sent his accommodation offer on results day, block and type. But they don't allocate the precise room until you get there, as they like as much flexibility as possible.

My god daughter's uni (still conditional) let her pick her own room in January. Very different approaches!

PandaG · 16/07/2018 22:19

DS has chosen room type for firm, but not heard anything from insurance. Hadn't twigged results are a month today. Eek!

GnomeDePlume · 17/07/2018 04:45

I am limbering up for the trolley dash through Wilkinsons for student essentials once we know where DD1 is going. DD1 will be a useful source of information on what to take and what not.

DD2 is feeling strangely cut adrift at the moment. She was saying her goodbyes after a party and there was no 'see you at school' as there would have been a couple of months ago. They are all in limbo not knowing where they will be in a couple of months time.

Downeyhouse · 17/07/2018 06:06

Checking in from the other side (post results).

I hope everyone has a good day on results day and that IF anyone does not make heir offer they quickly get great other offers through clearing.

Nearly 2 weeks post results here and several of ds friends are still in limbo about where they will go in August.

Lots of unis won’t commit to take to taking near misses until they have the A level results.

He is away with 3 friends - 2 are still in limbo. It is very unsettling for them but is what it is. They do have the advantage of being able to apply to clearing as soon as they know where they stand with their original choices which should be 1 week before results day.

Getting a plan b and c ready seems like a good tactic. Helps them feel in control and ready to hit the ground running.

Ds had his accommodation offer through for his firm in March. Although his offer was firmed last week we have not other info on what to pay and when. Going to give it another week as I want to pay the hall fees before we go away in August as they are due by 10/9.

All seeming a bit more real now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2018 08:24

I think I'm going to encourage dd to make a list of everything she will need to take to university. Then we can see if there's anything we need to buy before she knows where she is going.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2018 14:55

I've discovered I can pay dd to do some of my work this week. Less profit for me, but still feel like I'm winning Grin

Nettleskeins · 17/07/2018 20:17

we've paid the deposit for ds's accommodation. It is clear that he is very worried about going to uni and this seems to be calming his nerves, to know exactly where he is going, and that it is a "naice" place. Only five people in a flat.

It is such a relief to know we only have to wait another month. Ds is also awaiting his Grade 8 result in a week or so. In between we have Mallorca, Berlin (family visit) and some Scottish dancing in Dundee. Ds is going back to Ireland on Friday.

I'm packing again now.

GnomeDePlume · 17/07/2018 20:41

OYBBK from experience what is necessary and what is allowed can vary not just from uni to uni but also from hall to hall. We ended up having to rush around finding extra long sheets for DD1 as the beds in the particular hall were longer than standard. In a different hall on the same site the beds were standard length.
