Oh no mad Sad

Glandular fever is awful. I remember being completely wiped out with it, and I was told I didn't even have it very severely. I hope she recovers soon x

madnskint · 12/03/2018 20:06

Thank you- I think at the moment we will see if she improves enough to study for exams. If not I’m suggesting she delays taking her A levels till next year and reaplies to university for 2019 entry. She wouldn’t be keen on this though and I’m not sure what her college would say either

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/03/2018 20:12

Goodness Fantasy, that was a harsh comment she received :(

madnskint - how rotten for your dd. It must be quite a worry. That's really really rubbish.

madnskint your poor dd
Fantasy well better to know Sad still not much point giving no guidance
tbh ds has had the same experience, my meeting was suddenly invaded by a teacher telling me he was failing his English coursework. Dh and I really don't know what to do. The teacher's input seem to making it far far worse. I read it and it doesn;t make any sense and is written in absurd fancy writing. I want to rip it up, spend 3 days doing my own research and rewrite it completely. But it is a big job to rewrite something that is meant to have taken six months work so luckily for the exam board regulators I won;t be doing that. I actually wish he could just drop the English A level. I never want to see that particular coursework title again in my life, what a complete hash he and his teachers have made of the process and the books were bloody interesting!!!!Angry to be destroyed by his "analysis".

teachers meetings make me so so tired. I'm sure they feel the same about me and dsHmm

HesMyLobster · 12/03/2018 20:52

Oh Mad how awful, your poor DD.
No personal experience of GF but my best friend had it at almost exactly the same point in year 13 and I remember how poorly she was.
Fortunately she recovered in time for exams and went on to do very well (far better than me!) but she definitely had about a month of complete bed rest before she started to feel better and it was horribly worrying.
I hope your DD gets well soon, but it's a good idea to have a plan B in place, particularly as she needs to rest completely in order to recover and revision/exam stress won't help with that.
I really feel for you, sending positive get well thoughts Thanks

HesMyLobster · 12/03/2018 20:57

Sorry to hear of dc struggling with coursework, especially those who's teachers are being less than constructive.
Very frustrating if they won't offer useful advice and help.
I know DD got hold of the marking specification online somehow and that really helped her with hers. I suppose that depends on subject/exam board though.

derekthe1adyhamster · 12/03/2018 21:19

mad sorry no experience of GF but I really hope everything pans out OK,

FantasyAndHope · 12/03/2018 22:56

Oh mad
I sympathise with you being a parent to a dd who struggles health wise sometimes they just don’t want to take a rest and get better for the sake of Their health in their view it’s exams exams exams! They think their the be all and end all! When there’s time to resit etc of course it’s not always want they want to happen it’s hard hugs Flowers

kitten
It’s hard because it’s one thing to tell her that but they can’t give advice on how to fix it
She’s handed in a paragraph to be marked hopefully it’s better

UrsulaPandress · 13/03/2018 00:00

I have a friend who had glandular fever at 18 and it floored her for months.

Bekabeech · 13/03/2018 06:49

mad my sympathy for your DD. My DD had it in lower sixth and it meant she had to drop out and restart. I was relieved that she got it then not when she was at Uni, so I could look after her. I would inform the school asap. Flowers

doistayordoigo · 13/03/2018 07:25

mad hope your DD manages to get better quickly, hopefully with lots of tlc from you she'll manage it.

All this talk of coursework deadlines and rewrites makes me feel very glad that DS is only doing exam based subjects, it sounds very stressful!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 13/03/2018 18:23

mad as someone who developed CFS/ME after glandular fever in my first year of teaching, I would urge your dd to take as much rest as she needs. It is much easier to retake a year than to battle with a potentially lifelong disability.

madnskint · 13/03/2018 18:36

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I will have a chat with DD and also the college. We have a parents evening this week so I can discuss my concerns then.
I feel so sorry for her.

FantasyAndHope · 14/03/2018 11:00

Dd stressed out she rang me at 3am with a migraine as she’s not sleeping due to coursework stress. She took the teachers advice and asked friends to look at her coursework and they’ve said they can see her argument and what she thinks so it’s relieved her a bit but the teacher isn’t in this morning so she can’t do anymore before checking this off as it’s just wasting her time she’s exhausted from not sleeping but at the same time her brain can’t switch off

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2018 13:19

dd is tearing her hair out with a large bit of coursework that they were only given recently, with a very tight deadline. She will be fine with it, it's just a challenge to get it done in time to the standard she would like. I foresee lots of cake and cups of tea needed over the weekend.

All I can say is thank goodness she didn't run her EPQ up to the deadline.

OP posts:
FantasyAndHope · 14/03/2018 13:25

Kitten
Dd finds coursework worse then exams as there’s left scope in the markschemes for errors because it’s coursework and you have ‘time’ to do it

Dd is definitely worrying

puppypower1 · 14/03/2018 15:11

I'm so sorry to hear of DC struggling with their health. We are also having last minute coursework pressures. Thankfully EPQ is done (I think), so just coursework to finish now.

Still not much thought being given to firm/insurance (probably because of the above), and my encouragement to go to an applicant day of a uni that might be a firm has been met with determination that it is not necessary - "it's all on the internet". I think the thought of missing a day of school is actually what's driving this.

I'm looking forward to the Easter holidays, although with A level and GCSE revision going on, my role will be cake baking, cooking, clearing up and keeping the peace...! (and testing, kicking up the bum, switching the fuse off so the xbox doesn't work)

Good luck everyone....

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/03/2018 19:48

DS1's English set started working on their coursework in October. Over the past few months they did the reading, handed in plans and drafts and received feedback on how to improve and fine-tune to produce the final piece of work, which is due in tomorrow.

DS1 started the reading last week, submitted the plan on Friday, and is this evening completing his first draft, which by necessity will also end up being the actual coursework.

Shock
FantasyAndHope · 14/03/2018 19:56

puppy
Gosh GCSEs and alevels, the tension in your household will be high I can imagine. I hate the Easter holidays as she’s grumpy and moody because of revision
second
That sounds like dd and her history
First piece of English coursework has been submitted she’s submitted the draft for her second English piece she’s awaiting comments before submitting final draft

History is a whole new work.. she submitted draft late and was told it wasn’t correct and was terrible. She’s since figured out what the question wants (bear in mind she’s known the question since October) and has done a new introduction and submitted for feedback since she redid and was told it was an E grade
She’s awaiting feedback from intro but she has passed it round several people to ensure it’s clear what her argument is
So she has cracked on with the essay even though she wasn’t supposed to as final submission is Friday however it looks like that will be submitted Saturday.
I think English coursework may bleed into the holidays too!

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/03/2018 20:13

I haven't dared ask him about the History coursework...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2018 20:31

It's all a bit stressful isn't it. dds laptop is seriously playing up today and the added frustration of having to battle with that to do her coursework, which massively slowed her down drove her to tears. I'm hoping we have a workaround until after the coursework is due in so that she can get that in. Otherwise I'm not quite sure what we will do.

chocolateworshipper · 14/03/2018 20:46

DD has been officially told by college that she doesn't need to go back after the Easter holidays if she has handed in all her coursework. She's over the moon, but it's brought home to me how scarily close she is to the end of her time in education!

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/03/2018 20:57

OhYouBadBadKitten IT difficulties are frustrating at the best of times, let alone when you're working to a deadline.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2018 21:28

oh wow chocolate that is scary!

I feel really sorry for dd TheSecond, stupid laptop :( it's already been off for repair once recently.

DD has lost the two books for her coursework.

It is hell on wheels here.

She last saw them when she took them to the beach two weeks ago.
