Very stressful and I’ve had tears on the phone she is so unbelievably stressed, it’s sad to see them like this and IT frustrations complicated issues in December
chocolate
That’s scary dd has to return after Easter until May half term

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2018 22:11

I think we all need Wine tonight. We survived gcses, we can survive this. Keep strong everyone.

Sympathy to all battling with coursework and deadlines.
Technology always chooses the worst possible time to go wrong. There's Nothing more frustrating.

I'm suddenly very glad DD's history teachers insisted on coursework being handed in before half term - it made for a stressful January but at least DD is free to crack on with revision (and her French speaking exam prep) now.
She's hoping to get her pre-moderation grade for her History coursework this week.

She's been in bed all evening though with a migraine. Not great timing as she has her driving test tomorrow - especially as it seems to be affecting her vision.

I'm beginning to think DD driving is just not meant to be - she's had the worst luck with tests being cancelled etc (last one should have been when the beast from the East hit)
Fingers crossed it will have cleared by morning or we'll have to cancel again.

Nettleskeins · 14/03/2018 22:24

it's coursework hell here too folks Grin I can only grin because it is farce. They started it in July, and ds has been struggling to get above a U grade since end of October, despite 1:1 help earlier in the winter term. And he now seems to be in trouble with the deputy head for insubordination (nothing to do with coursework)

A new twist is that Cardiff has given him a rather moderate offer 2Bs and a Distinction in his Btec, certainly lower than Surrey, so they must have appreciated his audition even if he stopped half way through. He is rather pleased, but it will take a big push to get him up to that prediction. I am hoping he will firm it and put lots of effort in to get higher grades than at present. Both his insurances are very good, but I don't think he should just give up and put them (either of them)down as unconditionals, as he really likes Cardiff. Maybe he should just wait until May and then he will know how badly he is doing (gosh I'm cheery) before committing himself.

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/03/2018 00:45

We are also in the Coursework from Hell Club!

I can't quite decide how much is teachers and how much DD. There are certainly some issues with the History teacher changing her mind.

The English teacher has also caused problems, bit at least that's in. History is still waiting to have sources okayed - this is definitely not DD's fault!

I keep telling myself it will pass!

TheSecondOfHerName · 15/03/2018 08:08

And he now seems to be in trouble with the deputy head for insubordination

DS1 was told off once for "subversive behaviour" in Y12. His crime? Wearing a round-neck jumper over his shirt & tie and under his suit jacket (rather than a V-neck). 😄

TheSecondOfHerName · 15/03/2018 08:12

Nettleskeins it's difficult when they don't know how well they're going to do.

DS1 has put an unconditional from a low-ranking university as his insurance, but is planning to try to get as high grades as he can, in the hope of getting close enough to the ABB offer from the place he really wants that they accept him.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 09:33

lol at subversive behaviour! makes it sounds like they are wearing mockingjay pins.

I have no idea why dds college decided to issue the coursework so close to the end of term - unless its something that can't be done until they have covered a certain amount of material.

I chose my moment to ask about English coursework as it was something that I was totally unaware of. It turned out that I wasn't unaware of it at all, we've had several discussions about it in the car, I just hadn't realised that it was an assessed piece. It's all fine apparently.

Parent's evening approaches, I'm hoping that I escape The Call this time round. We've talked again as to whether he wants to redo the year but he's so close to the end now that I think he just needs to trudge on through and move on.

janiedee · 15/03/2018 11:21

No course work here (well, none mentioned anyway!) DD has put her UCAS choices in, put her accom application in and completed her Student finance application. It's all starting to feel very real! Same first choice as Ursula's DD I think xxx

flatmouse · 15/03/2018 12:41

DS is in college until last A level. Fortunately no coursework, and EPQ was done by Xmas. 2 subjects seem to be progressing ok, although his teacher has been away for 4 weeks now and won't be back til after Easter in one of those. The 3rd subject is a struggle. He has a tutor who thinks he is progressing, but in college tests are consistently failed. His folder is disorganised chaos, and he's just not reading messages and instructions. Am so frustrated (can't imagine how teacher feels!) Finally after a lot of being as patient as possible I got him to keep going over some revision questions until they'd been properly answered. He has another test next week.

I think I'm finding this worse than GCSEs, possibly as I don't have enough Knowledge of the subjects to properly help. He knows he has to focus more. Work more efficiently and more hours. But just gah!

FantasyAndHope · 15/03/2018 13:49

nettle
It’s hard when they seem to have no clue, dd’s English teacher was like this told her do X she did it and he told her to do y. Very frustrating
Coursework is hell here, dd texted to say she has done it and has had a message from a TSR person who has said he checks coursework for a fee of £5.99 and he got 3A*s last year, dd seems to think this a good move to take

It’s Frustrating dd being in school till half term because in some subjects she’s done except English for one section

After her last exam that’s her done and I doubt she’ll ever return not even for results day

chocolateworshipper · 15/03/2018 14:23

Thank goodness DD is leaving very soon - she's just texted me all upset because her favourite teacher from her favourite subject has been made redundant (along with some other teachers). DD is the sort who would be completely thrown off balance if that had happened earlier in the year.

FantasyAndHope · 15/03/2018 15:17

chocolate
That’s a shame

Dd has had her intro back from history teacher and we are on the right track with coursework finally 🎉🎉🎉 hopefully, dd will be able to sleep at night now she knows it’s right

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 15:52

That's really rotten Chocolate. Does the teacher get to stay on until the end of the year, or is it that she is leaving at Easter? If she's leaving at Easter, how on earth can they make someone redundant part way through th academic year?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 15:53

dd stays in college through to the very last exam too. As long as they can provide quiet constructive revision that's both of us happy.

FantasyAndHope · 15/03/2018 17:56

Dd has sent me a picture of when she first unpacked at boarding school and now she’s packing up... seems like it’s happening very soon
Will have to prepare arrangements for bringing all her stuff home which will lead onto how on earth she’s going to get everything to London

doistayordoigo · 15/03/2018 18:02

Quick question for those that have completed the student finance application...did you put in bank account details? DS has a normal current account, but won't be able to open a student bank account until after results day presumably. Will they still let us know how much his allocation will be if we leave the bank details empty for now?

TheSecondOfHerName · 15/03/2018 18:28

I attended an information session about student finance. They said to put the student's current bank details, as these can be amended after application.

DS1 received an email from UCAS containing a 'status code' to use when applying for a student bank account.

Littledrummergirl · 15/03/2018 22:59

We left ds1 blank, he can add the bank details when he gets the account.
He needs to change his university choice and it's proving to be a nightmare. It tells him to post the information on the website but the printed information says it's quicker to change it online.
He's going around in circles. Hopefully we can fix it on the weekend.

doistayordoigo · 16/03/2018 07:24

Oh blimey, i'd assumed it was easy to change the university information, as it clearly says you can...we put Birmingham on the form but he hasn't decided yet between Birmingham and Warwick. Off to Birmingham again on Saturday for the accommodation open day...I'll be glad when this is all over Grin

speakout · 16/03/2018 07:34

Such a lot to sort out isn't there.

We are not at the finance stage yet, still waiting for offers.

And I had a memory of DD in tears last summer as she didn't do as well in her Higher exams (Scotland) as she had hoped thinking she had scuppered her chances of University.
And now she has three firm offers ( including her two first choices- child nursing) not even needing the exams she will be sitting later this year.
So some breathing space!!

chocolateworshipper · 16/03/2018 07:52

That's great news speakout

A year in the life of a 17 / 18 year-old is a long time isn't it!

speakout · 16/03/2018 07:52

Yes- thanks chocolate.
