Roland you have a genius for food nostalgia threads - I have been lookimg for one to link to the MN memories thread, is something like 'what recipes did you mum think were snazzy' - I can't find it, must have been in chat. I loevd that thread.

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 12:48

Chipshop pasties / patties. How long have they been sitting their in that heated glass cabinet, stewing in E numbers?

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/01/2010 12:48

Arctic rolls are bloody lovely though - I was very pleased to find those. But they used to have more JAM.

Who in the name of god still buys Shippams beef Pastes, though. And I wonder what they are made of.

BikeRunSnowflake · 14/01/2010 12:49

Artic Roll.

Cyb · 14/01/2010 12:51

Actually block vanilla ice cream...we used to cut a slice and sandwich between 2 wafers. ice cream doesn;t taste like that anymore

JustAnotherManicMummy · 14/01/2010 12:51

Fish paste sandwiches. They were a tea party staple of my childhood. Except in our house because my mum thought they were common

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/01/2010 12:51

Re chip shops - I have never eaten a saveloy. What is it?

Pop tarts are fricking horrible, they were such a luxury when Iwas a teen (because gran never ever bought them as they were a dire extravagance, however I didn't want to deprive dd so bought them, we both hated them, what a disappointment.

And pot noodles do not taste the same or make me so happy as they did when I boight them in the Year 11 tuck shop with my dinner money and ate them listening to Nirvana.

Cyb · 14/01/2010 12:52

I still love a fish paste sandwich

Poledra · 14/01/2010 12:52

Chipshop chips aren't the same either - since they stop frying them in lard and the chips don;t stick to the paper at the bottom properly, it's just not the same. And don't get me started on serving chippy chips on polystyrene trays instead of newspaper....

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 12:56

oooh that snazzy thread made me ROAR

will find

GetOrfMoiLand - I can vouch for the fact thatsSaveloys are absolutely revolting. I ate one once as a child and was sick.

Battered sausages were a favourite, though. I am disgusted that I ever let such a thing touch my lips.

Slush puppies. They turned your whole mouth blue/pink/orange and gave you a sugar high the equivalent of snorting about a gram of high quality cocaine. Bad stuff.

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 12:57

my dh used to be in films....( polytheene films) and went to the oven chip factory

all the chips thay fell off the floor end up as smash

and when he said "floor" he meant floor. not clean floor

floor

Toffee Crisps. I'm sure they never used to taste fusty, but they do now.

Pickled Onion Monster Munch.

MayorNaze · 14/01/2010 13:00

that chocolate sauce that hardens on icecream - then - wow - now - bleeeurrrrgh

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 13:01

here is a sad memory - are your hankies out?
nothing tastes as good as the memory of boarding school produced illicit "fudge" ( for that read melted butter and not dissolved sugar)

eaten when snivelling after lights out

OP posts:
Cyb · 14/01/2010 13:01

Yes the main ingredient in that stuff is Vegetable Oil

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 13:01

mayor - they sitll make that
kids love it

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/01/2010 13:01

Ooh I used to eat smash mixed with about 2lb grated cheese - was my staple food as a teen.

Would not in a million years try that now.

Roland try and find the snazzy thread - it was great.

Used to work in an ice cream kiosk when I was 11 (this was only in the 1990s, not in 1887 as you may think) and I used to be allowed as many slush puppies and ice creams as i liked.

I was quite the expert on the MR whippy machine. And you couldn't get more than 4 flakes in a Mr Whippy - I tried.

Bloody love slush puppies still - especially rasberry (the blue one) or cherry.

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 13:02

Orange squash. How did I ever drink a gallon of Kia Ora a day?

Crinkle cut oven chips. Such a treat. Had some the other day and they tasted like oily wood chippings.

MayorNaze · 14/01/2010 13:03

cool i will serve it to them on nepolitan icecream ick ick and more ick

and while we are on frozen confectionary - WAFERS - all taste stale these days. perhaps they were made fresh when i were a lass and they never made any more...just stored up what there was...
