article here for me its sandwich spread. Boy i loved it, although ti looks like set chunder with its teeny tiny carrot flecks; it had a certain piquancy.

but no more

Oh...does anyone remember spag bowl flavoured monster munch? They did hamburger flavour too? DP looks at me oddly whenever I mention them. They did exist though, I loved them!

Pogleswood · 14/01/2010 18:24

Tizer,My DSis and I loved Tizer - and we only got to drink it on special occasions (christmas, birthdays).
my DH bought some recently and it was foul...

southeastastra · 14/01/2010 18:32

i still eat bloater paste, nice with crusty bread. our tesco decided to stop selling it though if anyone sees any - bung it in the post for me .

do not buy the new supermousse there's nothing super about it anymore

BadGardener · 14/01/2010 20:08

mind you, I tried dripping toast recently after doing a roast and it was divine.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 14/01/2010 21:26

I made corned beef hash not so long ago in a postmodern ironic sort of salute to Delia. It was foul. Don't think my cooking was to blame - but corned beef is really really salty. And my mum used to treat us to Shepherd's Pie made with corned beef .

RockBird · 14/01/2010 21:40

I've just eaten two M&S marshmallow teacakes and they were bloody lovely. I feel cheated now

BikeRunSnowflake · 14/01/2010 21:42

My MIL (good northerner, transported down south 40 years ago) STILL buys Viennetta for "posh". To her, it is the height of sophistication. I think it is revolting.

You can still get that Ice Magic stuff. Had some a few years ago. It was dreadful.

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 22:07

so rockbird do you withdraw the teacake allegation?

stealthsquiggle · 14/01/2010 22:16

I am positive certain wagon wheels were delicious. I tried one recently and they are entirely revolting.

I still like butterscotch Angel Delight and Vienetta though

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 14/01/2010 22:26

Am convinced Lord Toffingham icecreams would taste just as good if only you could get them now.

cyteen · 15/01/2010 11:18

Pogleswood, you have reminded me of VIMTO! Used to drink it by the bucketload when I was visiting my granny as a nipper, it seemed like nectar of the gods back then. Now - well, let's just say there's a reason it's an anagram of 'vomit'.

Portofino · 15/01/2010 11:40

I had a back to the 70s moment recently as I served dd sausages and spaghetti hoops for tea. The Pink Pather was on (well the Panthere Rose) and DH was waiting for Dr Who to start.

I realised that this was a complete resurrection of a typical Saturday teatime of my childhood. DH even cracked a beer and went in the garden for a roll up. The only thing missing was the scary wallpaper.

Pogleswood · 15/01/2010 14:53

,cyteen! I never tried Vimto as a child so have been spared that experience! (Though DH and DS drink it - no accounting for taste,is there?)

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 14:56

Oh god I have just had a nostalgia craving for a can of Top Deck - the green one (lager and lime).

We used to take that on school trips and pretend to be drunk

Ribena was classed as posh and too expensive when I was growing up so was like the holy grail of beverages. We had to have Gateway's own brand lemon squash.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 14:57

Portofino - what did you have for pudding, tinned pears and evap?

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 15/01/2010 15:00

I see BadGardener had the same as me. Findus Crispy Pancakes

we bought some the other night as I hadn't had them in YEARS.

I'm sure

a) they're shrunk
b) the fillings aren't as nice as they used to be

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 15:02

OP if you have not read Nigel Slater's nostalgia for 70s foodstuffs book (can't remember the name of it, English Food I think) you need to.

SkipToMyLou · 15/01/2010 15:11

I remember drinking cans of shandy in pub beer gardens, I bet kids can't do that these days.

Portofino · 15/01/2010 18:59

"Toast" is the name of Nigel Slater's book - is fab! I can stick my copy in the post if anyone wants it - CAT me.....If I can find it....

GOML, we generally only had pudding on a Sunday. Home made apple pie and custard (one lump or 2) at lunch, and tinned fruit and evap after a salad tea - exactly as you describe! I can even taste it!

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 19:05

No Porto - have just been upstairs and had a look, it's called Eating for England, is a book of vignettes about various topics such as Gypsy Cream biscuits, Fray Bentos pies,Floral Gums etc. It's really good.

Love Toast as well. He writes so brilliantly, reminds me of Alan Bennett.

at tinned fruit and evap. Especially fruit cocktail, urgh that vile cherry.

Portofino · 15/01/2010 19:16

Gypsy cream! God i had forgotten about that!

With you on the cherry!

Portofino · 15/01/2010 19:18

Sorry - I am thinking of Gypsy tart. God enough sugar to make your teeth fall out just looking at it.

cyteen · 15/01/2010 19:21

'urgh that vile cherry'

absolutely pmsl Sounds like a great band name though.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 19:23

Puddings of choice:

Those heinz things in a tin especially the jam sponge ones.

Homemade lemon meringue pie on special occasions only, lemon filling colour of a builder's hi viz jacket.

Jamaica Ginger loaf cake with custard, custard had air bubbles which were filled with custard powder.

I pudding which was similar to Vienetta albeit pink called Charisma which found favour in our household circa 1985.

SAGO, TAPIOCA, SEMOLINA - these are in caps because because I am screaming in the memory of it.

cyteen · 15/01/2010 19:34

Ah, the dreaded frogspawn. I came to quite like it

We used to get slabs of spongy pink blancmange at primary school, very disturbing stuff.
