MN Food Club? Or a kick up the bum.

You know, like a book club but with food.

As in, people agree a menu then cook it (presumably trying out different recipes or variations on a theme) and then come back and talk about what worked and what didn't. Or what was tricky.

Is that too anal?

Just a thought whilst watching Masterchef and thinking I need a kick up the bum to try different menus.

A main meal yes - but not a whole menu, to expensive and not enough time.

lucysmam · 12/02/2009 09:15

I'd be interested, like trying new stuff out on my unsuspecting oh

Agree with Ivykaty though, a whole menu would be way too expensive for me to buy at once although I would have time

zanz1bar · 12/02/2009 11:46

I am trying to follow 'The kitchen revolution' menus.
Would be a lovely idea to have a cooking buddy.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 12/02/2009 11:50

I think it sounds like fun. We could even cook the same thing using diff recipes sometimes.

babypowder · 12/02/2009 11:56

That sounds fantastic! How can we get it going?

MaryAnnSweetheart · 12/02/2009 12:02

yep, I'll have a go !

TrillianAstra · 12/02/2009 12:04

Sounds fun!

Colonelcupcake · 12/02/2009 12:19

Could I join in?

misshardbroom · 12/02/2009 17:38

sounds good. Please can I play?

Ivykaty44 · 12/02/2009 18:31

Well as it is half term next week I thought I would get my 10 year old dd to choose some recipes from younger cook books - this thread had inspired me to cook something different and let her choose some of the main course meals for the week.

we have on the list:

Toad in the Hole
Creamy tomato and red pepper sauce with linguine
Spanish omelette with potato - tortilla
Gondoliers Risotto (peas and ham)
Cauliflower cheese

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 19:13

Oooh I'm so excited some people think it's a good idea. I didn't get any response last night and was thinking "miserable feckers"

Yes, a whole menu too much.

Though I'd like to do something a bit challenging.

How do we decide what? How do they do it on the book club threads?

Is the Kitchen Revolution the Jamie book?

ClaraDeLaNoche · 12/02/2009 20:14

On the Book Club they vote, it seems very complicated though. Are you the boss MaryMother. I vote yes!

TrillianAstra · 12/02/2009 20:52

Yes, MaryMotherofCheeses is the boss (I seem to remember she had another name, what was it?).

norksinmywaistband · 12/02/2009 20:54

Can I join in please... This sounds great

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:17

Oh gosh, No, I'm not the boss. I'm far too lazy.

If I wasn't lazy, I wouldn't need a kick up the bum.

OK, how about these options:

We work through a book, like, the lunch section of Nigella's How to Eat. Or a Jamie book. Ministry of Food in order? Or whatever.

Or, DH suggest I suggest two or three classic dishes and we vote. How about, which I never cook but should try

  1. Coq au vin (!)
  2. Lamb tagine
and
  1. Ivykate's spanish omlette.

Perhaps we could get a top 10 of classic dishes.

ie traditional dishes where you have find a recipe and decide what works.

Though I also like the sound of the tomato and red pepper linguine.

Oh god, this might be tricky. As I said, I need a kick up the bum.

Right, might start a thread on top 10 classic dishes...

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:22

top 10 great british dishes?

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:24

There's quite a few with 10 as a score! let's try them out!

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:25

You will of course all adore my sausage casserole

OP posts:
fishie · 12/02/2009 22:25

maybe a list of ingredients, a few suggested recipes and a weekend to cook and talk about it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:28

Sounds great! Which recipes would you suggest fishie?

OP posts:
MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 22:44

I'm liking MN recipes.

We pick 10 which their posters have scored 10

5 veggie, 5 meat.

You choose 4 to do over a month.

You come back here and talk about them.

OP posts:
lucysmam · 12/02/2009 22:59

!!

How are we doing this?

CharleeheartsherChains · 12/02/2009 23:01

I will join when i can work out how it works!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 12/02/2009 23:02

I don't know how it works! I just started the thread!

OP posts:
lucysmam · 12/02/2009 23:07

how about pick a meal a week from the mn recipes? & discuss that week maybe?

Although, I bet some here are veggie & some not so maybe stuff that could be 'tampered' with to make a veggie version? & maybe have a certain night to cook it & then you've got a whole week to get back to the rest of us if you're busy
