MN Food Club? Or a kick up the bum.

You know, like a book club but with food.

As in, people agree a menu then cook it (presumably trying out different recipes or variations on a theme) and then come back and talk about what worked and what didn't. Or what was tricky.

Is that too anal?

Just a thought whilst watching Masterchef and thinking I need a kick up the bum to try different menus.

Damn! What's going on???

OP posts:
lucysmam · 13/02/2009 17:23

I guess not then

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 13/02/2009 17:25

LOL, best laid plans and all that.

I've put something on Site stuff.

Maybe we should do Kitchen Revolution after all???? (now that I've googled it and know what it is)

I just sort of think MN recipes would be nice.

Agree with you MN recipes has a nice cosy feel about it - plus no need to buy cookbooks if we don't have them already! I vote for giving them a chance to fix it before we change plans?

Ivykaty44 · 13/02/2009 18:09

would this one be any good as a substitute ??

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 13/02/2009 22:02

MN Recipes are back.

However, I think theres's nothing to stop you trying out a variation on a theme, as a talking point.

Ivykaty, that's what mine's going to look like

Can we come in too? Am also very excited about being part of a cooking clique club
DH and I both cook and keep meaning to try new recipes but it sort of goes by the wayside when life intrudes again!

Have got the MN cobbler recipe and will try it out once we get the shopping in - dependent on 2 birthday parties this w/e and DS's broken leg!!

Can I put a bid in for a few fish recipes please? DD (nearly 6) LOVES anything fishie and we are trying to increase our repertoire.

lucysmam · 14/02/2009 09:46

oooh, fish always goes down well here as well! So long as it's not super expensive fresh fish then yep, I'd like to try something nice with fish too

Ivykaty44 · 14/02/2009 12:16

I am going into town later to get some beef from the butcher and a ew vegtables of the markt - so will try it out probably Sunday or Monday.

CoffeeMad · 14/02/2009 14:00

Can I join in please?

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 14/02/2009 14:08

Fab idea Mary, count me in in March, already planned and shopped for Feb

lucysmam · 14/02/2009 14:49

lmao@stupid organisational skills. I've done our storeupboard shop this week for the month & been to the market for the weeks meat/veg.

We're using up some chicken I found lurking in the freezer tomorrow so the cobbler will be tea for 3 on Monday instead

feetheart · 14/02/2009 16:16

lucysmam - I usually get fish when its reduced and freeze it. Our local Somerfield seems to reduce fish a lot, just hoping they don't alter their stock control as we are doing rather well out of it at the moment!

Cobbler for us on Monday too - DH off to do food shop now.

lucysmam · 14/02/2009 16:24

we don't have a somerfield near us the co-op sells pre-packed salmon with herby buttery stuff but never bothered with it. I'd still give it a go though even if it was full price, just would have to be a 'date night' to justify spending the money rather than just an everyday tea for us.

Having said that, I know a man who owns a fish stall on the market, maybe worth seeing if I could get a bit of discount if we do try something fishy

MaryAnnSingleton · 14/02/2009 18:37

we're doing the cobbler tomorrow, I think !

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/02/2009 18:52

I have done the cobbler.

Twas lovely

I didn't follow the recipe exactly though, sorry. I cooked it for longer on a lower heat - 1 1/4 hours on gas mark 7 seemed a bit high. But if I did that again, I'd top it up with stock a bit because it ended up quite thick.

The dumplings were gorgeous and DS especially loved them.

Though I didn't cover the lot with cheese. I put some cheese in the dumplings and you're supposed to top it all with the rest of the cheese. But that seemed like a ruin of a good beef and red wine casserole! So I didn't, it was nicer I think.

Looking forward to hearing which other recipes from the 8 work well. I'll now start to think about which to try next weekend.

Mine is in the oven - cooking slowly on gas 1. I shall be taking it out and then having it for lunch on sunday (casserole is always far better when reheated) There is enough for another three meals for us so will be freezing some!!

Will make the cobbler topping in the morning.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/02/2009 22:48

I love the fact that you've done photos

Yours looks much lighter than mine did. The wine in mine made it really dark when i put all the liquid in.

I put a tiny bit of baking powder in the dumplings. They swelled up brilliantly!

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/02/2009 11:24

ah, no cobbler today after all- dh not feeling well, wants something light and airy...

Ivykaty44 · 15/02/2009 14:58

Well have had beef cobbler for lunch and it was rather nice, I did add a little worcestershire sauce and a tin of tomatoes to the recipe.

I made scones with a little cheese for topping . There was plenty so divided into three and put two tupperware boxes in the freezer and we eat the other third reheated and with the topping.

DD didn't like the scones/cobblers but eat the rest.

CoffeeMad · 15/02/2009 20:20

Evening ladies...have just finished the prep and will be making the beef cobbler tomorrow for tea, hope it turns out okay as have invited my in-laws

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 15/02/2009 22:12

This is fab, all trying the same recipe

Ivy, can't believe your DD didn't like the dumplings! DS couldn't get enough of them LOL.

MaryAnn, hoep you get yours soon. Tis lovely.

Though very filling. I did mash with ours, and ended up feeling it was completely unncessary.

feetheart · 16/02/2009 17:13

Cobbler in oven though won't be ready for children's dinner (got distracted by Monsters Inc). Looks like enough for DH and I tonight then all of us on Wednesday - smells good!

CoffeeMad · 16/02/2009 19:26

I made it this afternoon. It was lovely.

I followed the recipie to the letter if you discount the fact I had made the cobbler and put it in the casserole then turned round and came face to face with my chopped parsley.

In-laws loved it too, dd ate all hers and ds ate most of his then dh finished it off!

Thanks for the idea MMOC, looking forward to the next one.
