My daughter brought home someone elses packed lunch box today and in it were the remains of:

Crisps
Mini chocolate roll
Dairylee dunkables
Cheese string
Galaxy

and empty food bag - not sure of the contents but would hope a decent sandwich

I was so and . No wonder my DD wants rubbish in hers all the time!!!!

surprised school lets them away with this as ds are very strict on what is and isn't allowed to bring to school.

Rachmumoftwo · 30/04/2007 21:17

OMG- I hope this is because the child had already eaten the apple and banana and tuna sarnie and decided to leave the crap- but I doubt it!

emat · 30/04/2007 21:17

wow! I'd say the poor child was in a slump all afternoon after that!

DD's school doesn't allow any sweets, chocolate, biscuits or crisps except on Friday when they're allowed a small bar. Makes things a lot easier for me.

Rachmumoftwo · 30/04/2007 21:18

My dds school is not fussy but I apply the friday rule myself- they are called treats because you have them sometimes for a treat!

Boco · 30/04/2007 21:19

At my neice's school the teacher had to complain to a parent as a little reception child came to school with a lunchbox and all that was in it was a packet of sweets!

scatterbrain · 30/04/2007 21:20

OOooooh great - a judging thread !!

Maybe - just maybe - the mum hadn't had a chance to go shopping and that's all she had in ??

Anyone seen my dd's lunchbox by the way ? i think her friend may have taken it home by mistake !!!

FiveFingeredFiend · 30/04/2007 21:22

Sounds an expensive packed lunch!

emwad · 30/04/2007 21:22

I thought the school only allowed 1 treat per day: i.e: 1 x choc biscuit. I don't give my DD crisps or any 'rubbish' and tbh it is quite a struggle, now I know why!!! Whilst she's tucking into her pitta bread with ham and cucumber then fruit salad her friends are getting high on a massive amount of E numbers

Not judging at all Scatter just epathise that her dd would want to take the same things that's why much easier when school sets the tone on what is in the lunch box

emwad · 30/04/2007 21:24

I never thought about the mum not having time for shopping!! I was just so open mouthed when I opened it!!

Yuck, poor child.

Rachmumoftwo · 30/04/2007 21:25

Although not an ideal lunch for a child, I quite fancy it myself, especially the Galaxy!

hayes · 30/04/2007 21:25

to be honest schools have enough on their hands supervising children in the dinner hall without going thru the lunch boxes to chuck out "undesirables"

I think that all children should take school dinners/pick and mix that way they all have the same and they get a nutritious meal at lunchtime.

and for what is worth I thought this was a very judgemental thread too

Londonmamma · 30/04/2007 21:25

HORROR ???
I was expecting a severed finger or a sheep's eyeball

hayes · 30/04/2007 21:26

what do you mean yuck poor child?!

god its a banquet

Boco · 30/04/2007 21:26

Scatterbrain what all she had in was a packet of sweets? Would that happen? No bread, no cheese, nothing but one packet of sweets? Wouldn't you just go to the shop and buy some? I don't think i could send my child to school with no actual food at all. Or if you mean the op, well that's someone who HAS been to the shops, and spent a fair amount of money on all those items.

scatterbrain · 30/04/2007 21:27

Well you can judge me then - my dd has a packet of crisps most days (after school) and adores cheese strings (which by the way are JUST cheese - so not actually unhealthy at all !), we have choc mini rolls in the cupboard and choc bics and she has one of those after tea if she has finished her healthy meal and is still hungry !!

I don't buy the "junk food" argument - in moderation I don't believe any food is actaully junk.

She has fruit and sometimes cheese cubes for her morning snack, eats a healthy school lunch and effectively a picnic tea at home ! She has wholemeal bread and has lots of fruit and veg.

imho I don't think a few crisps, cakes and biscuits are BAD per se !

yesireallycan · 30/04/2007 21:29

God, bloody judgemental thread in my view too. I love Mumsnet - a bit too much actually - but I really hate this bloody food police stuff. So your DD has organic porridge and feckin' goji berries for breakfast while mine has pop tarts - so does that make you a superior human being? My kids have a reasonable diet - mostly healthy, some not - but then so do I. If someone else saw my DD's lunchbox they might be horrified but so what. It's none of their business!!!!!

hayes · 30/04/2007 21:30

my dd likes cheestrings, love lunchables etc etc, she gets them now and again just not all the time....god she even drinks fruit shoots from time to time.

The key here is to balance the not so nutritious with healthy meals

I certainly think that there are more important things in the world to be and about

LilyLoo · 30/04/2007 21:30

Scatterbrain my dc's the same and i of the 'in moderation' too but thought this thread was more looking at schools helping parents i,e we do do not allow junk food, tbh Hayes i would think most parents would respect a schools stance on this as it is drummed into my ds that much that he wouldn't want to take in any 'junk' food although i allow it at home.

Rachmumoftwo · 30/04/2007 21:31

When mine want crisps I say yes, after a piece of fruit. I had crisps every day as a kid at playtime & 'it never did me any harm'.

scatterbrain · 30/04/2007 21:31

I disagree actualy Boco - today in my house before school there was mouldy bread - none left in the freezer, no cheese, no ham, there was marmite and jam, but no bread to put it on. I could not have made a sandwich today if dd had packed lunches - and yes I would have filled up her lunchbox with alternatives from whatever I had in. Better some food than no food I would say !

I didn't mention sweets though !

Thank goodness Ocado just delivered eh ?

MrsSpoon · 30/04/2007 21:31

Sounds like all the child had was 'junk' though, hardly as if there was a decent lunch and then a packet of crisps or a mini roll for afters.

I thought on reading the title of this thread that someone else had a mother as absent minded as mine and had found a rubber band in their banana sandwich...

The dunkable and chocolate bar aside, it didn't sound too bad to me. When we had packed lunches as kids, we had a sarnie (fish paste, value cheese, jam or banana, tuna or ham if we were VERY lucky), a bag of crisps and a penguin or suchlike. My mum couldn't afford 'good' stuff and had no interest in cooking, so she put together what we'd actually eat so it wouldn't be wasted, iyswim. None of us had weight issues or went hyper/into a slump...
