I'd be really grateful if you lot would critique our dinner tonight, to see how healthy/nutritious it is.

Each plate had:

55g rump steak
2 X baby potatoes roasted in olive oil
1/4 pink onion, roasted with pots
60g champignons, sautéed in butter
130g mixed salad
10g crispy noodles (on salad)
Approx 3tbsp mustard gravy, made with steak juices, tbsp wholegrain mustard, and a few gravy granules

You'd be offended if someone served you a steak, potatoes and salad? Confused

yes sorry, cooked in oil not butter, but makes no difference.
There is the gravy, partly made with industrial granules, then everything is cooked in fat (butter or oil), that is sauce to me. And the high fat, high salt noodles.

Sorry, but you asked. your dinner is not healthy. Too much. But then, I am French, and my definition of healthy often clashes with the Australian one.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 12:46

'partly made with industrial granules'

Industrial granules, so huge each granule had to be transported in in a wheelbarrow.

kiwidreamer · 29/06/2016 12:47

sorry was going to finish with if you are keeping an eye on your weight, that is all good food IMO low sugars, not too high in fat but just keep an eye on the carbs and the unseen cals in the butter etc, normally it wouldn't matter at all but if you are looking for a calorie deficit to drop the extra weight then that is the easiest place to start.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/06/2016 12:49

Funny - my French ex-flatmates cooked plenty of sauces, and certainly didn't hold back with the butter either.

But there you go.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 12:53

The French are obsessed with butter.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 12:53

They're less obsessed with vegetables however.

LilQueenie · 29/06/2016 12:53

2 potatoes? Who did you invite Spudgun Grin

Does seem very small and I would expect more than 2 potatoes. Never heard of noodles on salad.

UmbongoUnchained · 29/06/2016 12:55

Yes I'd be offended if I was served such a tiny meal.

dollylucy · 29/06/2016 12:56

Baby potatoes don't need to be roasted

Mushrooms don't need to be in butter, try soy sauce or balsamic, I use a bit of Philadelphia to make a sauce

Noodles full of oil, but tiny amount

Gravy sounds nice

Socksey · 29/06/2016 12:56

Any particular reason for such a small portion of meat (110g is not really much.
If you are trying to lose 10kg as you say you need your meals to fill you up so you don't go looking for more food later, or feel miserably hungry. Protein is a good way of keeping your stomach full for a longer period of time.
When I am trying to keep my weight down, or lose a few kg, I would opt for something like a lean steak (200+g... even 250g), with a large portion of green veg / salad, a few boiled potatoes and maybe something like an avocado and tomato salad on the side (need some fat in your diet ... lol)
Which would give me some 650 calories (as long as it's not dripping in oil)... which out of a calorie budget of 1400 leaves 750... so eggs and toast for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch and some fruit snack... BTW, I actually budget 1800 per day if losing weight, but I know many people seem to think this is a horiffic amount... but it leaves me 'somewhere to go' if dieting stalls...

PurpleDaisies · 29/06/2016 12:58

It sounds like what we might be given when we same at with dh's parents (with the original 55g steak).

We hide food in our suitcase because we are always starving. They once gave us a tiny piece of salmon, one and a half potatoes, five tiny sprouts and about a tablespoon of cheese sauce as s main meal. I almost cried.

Palomb · 29/06/2016 12:59

Not sure why you thing anyone wants to critique your dinner?

I have no idea why anyone actually isConfused

How odd.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 29/06/2016 12:59

We don't eliminate anything, as part of a healthy diet. Sautéing the champignons in a tsp of butter, and drizzling the roast baby pots (and pink onion) in olive oil just seem to me like a normal amount of good tasty fat in an otherwise pretty low fat diet.

Possibly the shallow fried crispy noodles could be considered overkill, but were really a very small amount, provided for texture.

And I've already said, I purely asked for other people's opinions, as to how our dinner shaped up. No biggie.

Oh, and no dressing on the salad.

Can I ask if baby potatoes are bigger in Australia? To me a baby potato is something you might as well not bother having if they're aren't dozens at least six on the plate.

noeffingidea · 29/06/2016 13:01

The recommended portion size of lean meat is 70g, so 110g of steak isn't tiny at all.
The meal looks fine to me (apart from being a vegetarian so not liking steak), a nice variety.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 29/06/2016 13:01

Then why comment at all palomb??

notagiraffe · 29/06/2016 13:02

130g salad is masses. My idea of heaven. And lettuce with gravy is underestimated. I'd be happy with that and I'm a glutton.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 29/06/2016 13:03

Baby potatoes here are about 2.5" long and 1.5" wide, as I think they probably are everywhere.

Nivea101 · 29/06/2016 13:06

Looks alright to me, BUT not all on the same plate!! I couldn't bear to have gravy next to salad. Ugh

PurpleDaisies · 29/06/2016 13:06

Two British baby potatoes with a teaspoon for scale.

please critique our dinner
idontlikealdi · 29/06/2016 13:07

If you buy a sirloin in the shops pre cut its around 200g pre cooked weight. I'd get laughed at if I served a quarter of a steak for dinner!

treaclesoda · 29/06/2016 13:07

when I think of a baby potato I imagined something much much smaller than that. Two potatoes of the size you have described sounds just right to me.

BettyDraper1 · 29/06/2016 13:08

I think everything should be measured in cheese and teaspoons. The 'cheesespoons' measurement system.

BettyDraper1 · 29/06/2016 13:10

Also, I would eat ALL of the potatoes.
