You don't have to go to the trouble of copying and pasting or describing it all, but just recommend the recipe and the book and why it works for you/your family? Everyone else can google the links.

As an example, for me it would be the minestrone from Nigella's How To Eat. I've made it so often now that I don't really need to look at the book, but I love it because it is quirky (no garlic, no tomatoes - both of which I love but this recipe just totally works without either) and one way to get the children to eat dark greens. And also because it is lush and keeps well and can be a lunch for friends, or a proper main course dinner for family.

I want to expand my repertoire of fail-safe day to day stuff like this! Anyone want to contribute?

Love this thread.

I would second bbc chilli.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/02/2016 21:17

Delia's lasagne al forno, a lot of effort but always a winner!

Is there a way to save this thread? It's fabulous!

MitzyLeFrouf · 02/02/2016 10:12

It's in the Food section. It won't disappear.

Sunbeam18 · 02/02/2016 12:39

Thank God!

I made Jools Pregnant Pasta last night; it was Okayyyyyy - but not brilliant. I also only added 2 tablespoons of the balsamic vinegar instead of the 4. It tasted quite strong enough!

I started with good sausages, as well; they are our own!

Not sure where I went wrong.

Off to try a Hairy Biker number, now.

I very sporadically write a blog keeping note of these recipes I either make up with lazy leftovers or ones we come back to lots.
I often use a recipe for a chicken an ham pasta bake by Gill Holcombe in her splendidly lengthy titled first book, something like "how to feed your family on..."
I will paste a link to one of my most popular dishes in a separate post as on phone and it's complicated!

KnittyFoxyMa · 02/02/2016 22:59

This is probably my mos often requested and repeated dish.

Love this thread

Like a few of you I love Jool's pregnant pasta - we have to go easy on the fennel as dd finds it too much....she's wrong but we are working on her!
Also love sweet tomato and aubergine rigatoni - Jamie again - this converted dcs from hating aubergines to pure love!
Pasta with Broccoli Antonio Carluccio's Vegetables - may seem like an odd combination but so good, quick and easy!
Potato, rosemary and caramelised onion pizza - a recipe stolen from a pizza shop in Melbourne. First layer mozzarella on top of base, then caramelised onion, then potato coated in rosemary infused olive oil. it's carb-tastic.
Jamie's perfect lamb shanks
Fay Ripley's Easy Lamb Shanks
Quick and creamy haddock Fay Ripley
Gnocchi with chestnut and sausage River Cafe Green - making the gnocchi is a good rainy day activity for the kids.

CaptainWarbeck · 03/02/2016 10:12

Just made Jool's pregnant pasta too. The fennel in it is delicious. I cut down the balsamic from 4tsp to 1 glug on the advice of this thread and that worked fine.

Made it veggie with Quorn sausages, some blitzed, some fried and chopped and a bit of soy sauce and marmite for umami. It's really good, will go on our meal list.

Someone else recommended Copy Me That as a way of saving recipes over on the Food boards. I've adopted it and it's great. You can save recipes from anywhere, add pictures, edit, meal plan your week and pull out a full list of ingredients from your plan for shopping.

Destinysdaughter · 03/02/2016 14:42

Ha I just tried Jools pregnant pasta too! Was pretty tasty but again I only used a glug of balsamic, think 4 tablespoons would be pretty overpowering.

Higge · 03/02/2016 19:10

Tried the Chicken Cacciatore - made the mistake of using breast and they were a bit dry, sauce was brilliant and will definitely make again but will use thighs next time. Thanks for the recipe suggestion Double

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/02/2016 19:15

I very rarely use chicken breasts these days, thighs are so much nicer.
I think my one exception is Hunter's chicken as breasts are better for opening and stuffing.

InTheTeapot · 05/02/2016 11:03

Just got the CopyMeThat app. It's brilliant, thank you. Struggling to get the button on my browser but will persevere as it will be so easy to save recipes.

PrimalLass · 05/02/2016 20:29

The last two night I've made this:

Arabic lamb chops tray bake
Dice up some potatoes, onions, peppers. Place on shallow oven tray. Drizzle with olive oil and chuck some herbs on (I used rosemary and oregano), and some whole garlic cloves. Mix it all up so the veg are covered.

Roast until everything looks nearly cooked.

While veg are cooking, throw some (lots of) baharat and olive oil at the lamb chops, plus some salt. Mix well to cover chops. Leave to sit.

When veg nearly cooked, place chops on the top and bake for a further 20 mins or so.

Serve with hummus, tzatziki and Greek salad.

firefly78 · 07/02/2016 23:11

me and DH dont like fennel at all so would that mean its a bad idea to try jools pregnant pasta? or could i leave the fennel out?

CaptainWarbeck · 08/02/2016 02:46

Hmm firefly it would pretty much be spicy tomatoey sausagey pasta without it but still nice enough. The fennel makes it though!

AvaLeStrange · 08/02/2016 03:22

Primal that sounds lovely. Definitely going on the 'to do' list!

I had a vegetarian friend round for lunch on Friday and used the taleggio filling from the Mary Berry recipe in large mushrooms. Used a few more breadcrumbs mixed with parmesan for topping and served with salad & garlic bread - worked really well.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/nov/08/one-pot-winter-recipes-hugh-fearnley-whittingstall the baked chicken and rice one pot is lovely - normally have as weekend lunch /dinner as there's a bit of prep frying off the chicken but delicious and worth the effort.

Higge · 11/02/2016 11:53

Amused by HFW's article on one pot wonders how many pots does he use to make that lasagna? Grin
