Food that is healthy yet genuinely delicious

157 replies

flightofthe7millionbumblebees · 05/04/2012 17:22

So, as we all know most healthy is not as tasty as unhealthy food. For example, carrots = disgusting, but fudge = delicious. I am starting to try and eat more healthily (not trying to lose weight, just want eat more nutritious food). And I want to come up with a list of foods that are genuinely tasty (as in they're so nice that you crave them) and yet really healthy too. I know everyone will have different tastes, but I'm curious to know: which foods do you find are gorgeous but nutritious? Below is my list so far:

smoked salmon
pineapple
smoked mackerel
aubergine
oatcakes
cottage cheese
eggs
EV olive oil

Jacket potato and m and s sugar snap and bean salad.

PaquesJeLeVauxBien · 08/04/2012 13:11

First define 'healthy'!

Fat is not bad for you!

Would rather have butter over margarine any day of the week.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/04/2012 13:25

Teriyaki chicken stir fry. I make my own teriyaki marinade with soy sauce, a bit of squeezy honey, garlic, grated fresh ginger, lime juice and a dash of sesame oil, marinate the chicken in some of it, then stir fry it, and serve with rice, and a veggie stir fry with the rest of the marinade thrown over to make a sauce. Utterly gorgeous.

I second avocados as healthy and delicious - if I understand correctly, the fat in them is good fat.

King prawns - I can eat them on their own or in a salad or curry.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/04/2012 13:25

Oatcakes - and yes to the Nairns ginger ones too.

radishes - gosh I love radishes;

beetroot;

asparagus;

black grapes or those lovely new Taste The Difference ones that taste like wine;

chickpeas - chickpea curry is pretty healthy and spices are supposed to be good for you, especially turmeric I think;

raspberries;

mango (and especially my mango salsa which is a thing of wonder);

veggie chilli - packed with beans and vege so it's got to be healthy, right? Well, if I ignore the cheese and sour cream I put on top it is!

watercress - I eat loads of it;

omelettes are pretty healthy aren't they? Especially if eaten with salad and cooked with veggies in;

really good wholemeal bread (but I have to have proper butter on it).

Will be back to read/suggest things later but OMG OP I love your name :o

noddyholder · 08/04/2012 13:48

grapes that taste like wine? I think I may just start getting my 5 a day!

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 08/04/2012 21:07

Remus how do you make your mango salsa? If you don't mind sharing? Also what do you eat it with? I am so naive!

Fab suggestions on this thread, well done OP!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/04/2012 21:12

Mango salsa = chopped mango, chopped red onion, chopped red pepper, finely chopped red chilli, lemon or line juice, s&p, fresh coriander. We have it with veggie chilli, or with qaesadillas.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/04/2012 21:12

lime

Toeuffeta · 08/04/2012 21:22

BNS - Cut in half roast scoop seeds out once cooked.

Sugar snaps dipped in soy mmmmmm

Canteloupe melon

Loving the sound of natural yoghurt with passion fruit stirred in - genius!

Baked kale crisps! has nobody mentioned them yet? i can easily eat a whole bag of kale cooked like this in front of the telly with beer

they have a lovely crispy, oily mouthfeel and you feel as if they must be really unhealthy but they are actually incredibly good for you and only need a tiny bit of oil and seasoning

Iambaboon · 09/04/2012 07:57

Thanks frankwippery it was your recipe I wanted

This is a fab u lous thread. I'm bf and have eaten mostly cake, ice cream, chocolate, cake, bread and cake for the last 8 months. I'm fat, grey and lethargic

I'm going to cut and paste this thread and do my shopping list from it

Thanks

Avocado
Tinned sardines
Smoked mackerel
Watercress
Hummus
Bananas
Natural yoghurt
Eggs

therumoursaretrue · 09/04/2012 08:44

This thread is fantastic, but it's making me so hungry! I'm off in search of munchies after this.

Manuka honey
Seasoned sunflower seeds (take 5 minutes to season and so good!)
Passionfruit

Also,

Any fruit chucked in a blender with a glass of fruit juice and a few cubes of low-fat frozen yogurt works for me.

Sweet potato chips, with loads of paprika as seasoning...almost better than real chips!

Beetroot, parsnip and carrot crisps are beautiful! Homemade ones cut out all the crap...just veggies, ev olive oil and some seasoning. Yum!

fuzzpig · 09/04/2012 10:19

Avocado
Rocket
Pine nuts (so bloody expensive though)
Watermelon
Pretty much any fruit really :o

fuzzpig · 09/04/2012 10:20

Something I really really love is baked sweet potato with chopped spring onion and cubes of feta. OMG.

Scootergrrrl · 09/04/2012 14:48

Baked sweet potato is also amazing with mozarella and sweet chilli sauce. Mmmmmmm.

PepeLePew · 09/04/2012 15:42

As of today, I am adding low fat greek yoghurt with a small spoon of lime curd to the list. I know that lime curd isn't the best, but you don't need much of it and it makes the yoghurt incredibly good.

Half an avocado with a splash of white wine vinegar and black pepper.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2012 18:59

You can buy lime curd? Where? I need to know! Greek yog is lovely with a spoon of lemon curd and a squeeze of lemon - but them I dip shortbread in it, so it's not good enough for this thread!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/04/2012 22:18

You can make lime curd - just substitute limes for lemons in a lemon curd recipe - but you will need more limes than lemons, obviously. It's not hard to make at all - I will dig out my recipe and post it tomorrow, if you want.

PepeLePew · 09/04/2012 22:24

I bought mine from a National Trust shop...it's fab. Don't tell me it's not available in the supermarket?! That would be crushingly bad news. I'd have to break my vow never to make preserves and make my own!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/04/2012 23:06

Will have a look in Waitrose tomorrow. I daren't try making it: I think I would end up with scrambled eggs - citrus flavoured eggs.

DowagersHump · 09/04/2012 23:16

flight - I have a fantastic chilli lime carrot salad recipe I can post if you want it? It's absolutely delicious and v healthy but will have to dig it out

sybilfaulty · 10/04/2012 15:58

Could you post the carrot salad recipe here please?

I second so many of the lovely foods here - shellfish is good when you need a low fat treat (although quite high in cholesterol, apparently).

Scootergrrrl · 11/04/2012 10:30

So far, from this thread, I have made the teryaki chicken which was delicious, and the roast aubergine/tomato/feta salad which was also fabuolous, although I think I put too much creme fraiche on and it all went a bit soggy.
I have also discovered the deliciousness of sliced apple spread with crunchy peanut butter.
