Food that is healthy yet genuinely delicious

So, as we all know most healthy is not as tasty as unhealthy food. For example, carrots = disgusting, but fudge = delicious. I am starting to try and eat more healthily (not trying to lose weight, just want eat more nutritious food). And I want to come up with a list of foods that are genuinely tasty (as in they're so nice that you crave them) and yet really healthy too. I know everyone will have different tastes, but I'm curious to know: which foods do you find are gorgeous but nutritious? Below is my list so far:

smoked salmon
pineapple
smoked mackerel
aubergine
oatcakes
cottage cheese
eggs
EV olive oil

I do this for the DCs and DH (and when I'm not low carbing)

www.instructables.com/id/Microwave-Popcorn%3A-Home-made,-cheap-and-easy/

and here is the chickpea link working (FFS)

Re butternut squash - we just halve it lengthways then slice in to large, er, slices then roast. Are we supposed to peel them??

I'm glad someone mentioned porridge Grin I have mine with milk but no sugar - I'm tempted now to just do it with water, is there a noticeable difference?

Mushrooms are good too. I can't eat them cooked - they make me sick - but I love to use them as snacks.

Fresh ripe Alphonso mangoes. Probably my favourite food ever.

Asparagus.

Sadly I don't have a microwave. Well, not sadly as I don't want one, but air-popped popcorn does sound great!

Artichoke hearts-I'm going mad for them at the mo.
0% Greek yoghurt
Honey (in small quantities!)
Cherry tomatoes
Grapes
Half fat Halloumi
Avocados
Chilli
Garlic
Prawns
Nearly all fish
Really good quality bacon with the fat cut off
Poached eggs
Spinach
Fake 'hollandaise' sauce-extra light mayo, mustard and lemon juice
Mushrooms

I'm sure there's more that I can't think of at the mo!

pluckingupcourage · 05/04/2012 19:35

flight - I either do the microwave one or use an electric hot air popcorn maker which is shaped like a duck. Unfortunately it does look like a duck is vomiting popcorn into the bowl as the popcorn flows out of its beak.

apologies for the many link fails.

Kaloobear · 05/04/2012 19:35

ASPARAGUS

How could I forget?!

BlingBubbles · 05/04/2012 19:35

You dont have to peel butternut if you are roasting it, you can eat the skin, it's even more healthier.

roughtyping · 05/04/2012 19:36

Baked salmon with broccoli is delicious!

I snack on carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes and mange tout when im eating well - I love them.

pluckingupcourage · 05/04/2012 19:37

kaloobear - half fat halloumi!!! how did its existence pass me by ...

flightofthe7millionbumblebees · 05/04/2012 19:39

Bling that's good to know, I will not bother with the peeling in future. (Still might die when I try to cut it though.)

plucking I quite like the idea of the vomiting duck :)

Mushrooms and tomatoes fried with a little olive oil and plenty of Worcestershire sauce. On toast with salt and pepper and a little grated cheese. Yummy and very low in weight watcher points.

Homemade mackerel pâté made with peppered smoked mackerel, extra light philadelphia, low fat creme Fraiche and lemn juice.

Off now to have porridge- got the craving now it's been mentioned here!

flightofthe7millionbumblebees · 05/04/2012 19:48

chocolatecheesecake that's a great contribution, thank you! Will be making the mackerel pate asap.

I am off to make dinner now - spinach, feta and mozzarella quesadillas in case you're interested :)

Pluckingupcourage I know, it made me bloody happy Grin

moosemama · 05/04/2012 19:54

I didn't know you could eat butternut skin if it's roasted. Isn't it a bit leathery?

TwllBach, there is a noticeable difference between porridge made with milk and porridge made with water. The water version is still creamy, but not if you're used to using milk, iyswim.

Agree that butter is good. Even when dieting I choose butter over spread. I would also always rather have a small amount of good quality hard cheese than a horrible synthetic low-fat facsimile.

I am definitely having porridge tonight now. My gang are all eating poached eggs and I can't stomach them myself. I only do omelette and if I absolutely have to scrambled eggs.

I really like the Nakd Ginger Bread bars for the occasional snack. The dcs love them as well, which is great, as being a veggie family they need to eat nuts.

Gincognito · 05/04/2012 21:55

I honestly think that butter and cream are actively good for you, and that full-fat is healthier nine times out of ten

ivykaty44 · 05/04/2012 22:00

stir fry vegetables with prawns or chicken
chicken noddle soup
naked popcorn is yummy
hot fruit salad
star ainese and honey with pineapple
almonds, brasil nuts

but my all time favourite is unsulphered dried apricots and 70% chocolate broken into tiny pieces and eaten together, there is nothing to beat it....

sharond101 · 05/04/2012 22:19

Peanut butter (although not so healthy in the industrial sized quantities I consume!)

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 05/04/2012 22:24

A nice tin of sweetcorn.

A side plate with cubes of cheshire cheese one side and slices of cucumber the other.

A stick of celery filled with low fat cream cheese.

Vegetable soup.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 05/04/2012 22:28

I will often stuff a whole pack of sugarsnap peas when I'm out, have missed a meal, and need a bit of a pick me up.

pluckingupcourage · 06/04/2012 01:36

oooh also almond butter (it's ambrosial).

CogitoErgoSometimes · 06/04/2012 10:53

Asparagus, avocados and seafood/shellfish.... preferably all on the same plate :)

moosemama · 06/04/2012 19:07

SkinnyVanilla, I have a big thing for raw sugarsnaps at the moment, along with mangetout and fine beans. Can't get enough of them and am happy to eat them like a bag of sweets!
