I have seen recipes using sesame oil instead...might try that...

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2012 12:00

HMRC website says "Commercial consignments of £15 or less are free from customs duty and import VAT." Beater was £14.14, so should be OK. It's not actually the duty I mind, it's the huge "handling charge" which gets stuck on as well.

mrspink27 · 16/03/2012 13:17

Ok the flex edge beater and book are in my amazon basket... just may need to buy something else for my lovely shiny artisan... I stroke it regularly and DH thinks I am bonkers... not sure I would use the slicer.... so.... have an itchy finger.... what else????

Pufflemum · 16/03/2012 13:29

I have just made the Riverford beetroot and chocolate cake/ mousse. It required me to use both the glass and steel bowls, the whisk and the beater. Who cares how it tastes, it is KA heaven!

Jins · 16/03/2012 13:33

I've stolen a frosting recipe from the Kenwood thread. Just trying it now

Honeydragon · 16/03/2012 13:35

Is it my flour and milk one? tis delish.

Jins · 16/03/2012 13:37

That's the one. I'm just waiting for the flour and milk mix to cool down.

It sounds like it shouldn't work doesn't it?

OP posts:
Honeydragon · 16/03/2012 13:41

It does. My DS loves it, he finds butter cream too sickly so loves this one on chocolate cake particularly as the blog suggests.

I'm being dull today, think a bog standard Vic sponge is in order if I get the hoovering done.

Jins · 16/03/2012 13:43

I was thinking about making whoopie pies but I think it's going to be a chocolate cake instead. Whoopie pies feel like too much effort :)

I'm going to have to leave the quiche club. My phone has been down so I havent been able to order the mixer and its now gone back up to £419 everywhere. I cant bring myself to spend that when it was only going to be £373 yesterday Sad Wine

Jins · 16/03/2012 16:46

Stay in the quiche. We're bound to find a bargain soon

Chopstheduck · 16/03/2012 17:14

I think so jins, that the one they have on masterchef. Looks very nice!

aww, no springflower, don't go! Bound to be a sale again soon.

I lvoe whoopie pies but I always seem to underestimate the size and they end up MONSTERS! HB book has lovely banoffee ones.

Has anyone had much luck making french macaroons? Seem to be very tricky to get absolutely right. I made three batches last time and only one was perfect.

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2012 17:15

Jins - yes that's the one I have (in white) - they do much bigger ones as well.

I am sure someone somewhere will start an offer soon, which all the other online retailers will have to match - keep the faith, nospringflower.

sybilvimes · 16/03/2012 17:33

I have never made whoopie pies (random comment of the day) actually I don't even know what's in them. Are they nice?

I think the term whoopie puts me off. It's what my mum ( a woman who thinks crap is a swear word) would call a big pile of steaming poo.

Nospringflower · 16/03/2012 17:50

Thanks folks - will stay and get ideas so that when I finally get one it will be all the better Grin. Am going to spend all my time googling them until I find them on sale.

sybilvimes · 16/03/2012 17:53

Nospringflower, just think, you can have a lovely time until then deciding on your list of favourite colours. It took me ages to decide which one to get.

wem · 16/03/2012 18:09

Just popping back because I'm sure someone on the thread said they were on sale at Selfridges.

Look, here

Jins · 16/03/2012 18:11

Cheers wem

There you go Nospringflower - get your colour chosen

sybilvimes · 16/03/2012 18:23

I like the willow one out of those. Ooh, which one are you planning to get?

Nospringflower · 16/03/2012 18:32

Awww, got all excited then but it is the cream one that I want - and it is still £419 Envy. I had been swithering about cream or red and had finally decided on cream so cant even enjoy colour choosing Sybil. I found some on the Cotswalds Company website for £379 but although they say they are in stock it wont let me put it in my basked Sad. I am feeling hopeful though that it wont be too long ....

Chopstheduck · 16/03/2012 18:37

I've never tried any other whoopie pies, but mine are a springy kind of sponge, and the filling is made with a buttercream with added marshmallow fluff. Very nice!

PrancingBuffalo · 16/03/2012 18:58

I like the first Hummingbird cook book, not so keen on the second. I also like David Leibovitz's blog. He recently posted pics when he was moving and I'm sure I spotted two KAs [sad muppet face].

Honeydragon, please can we have a link to the blog/choc cake/frosting part?

TreacleSoda · 16/03/2012 19:23

this thread has moved so fast! I have to report back that Dan Leppards Weetabix muffins are good, and sort of wholesome, so I was able to pack DD off to school and DH off to work today with a good wholesome muffin to eat mid morning. I replaced the raisins with dried cranberries though, just because I could.

I have got serious Kitchenaid envy, that light blue one was a thing of great beauty. Mine is about 11 years old, it was the single most expensive thing I have ever bought myself, but also the best. I think it cost £270 all those years ago. Still going strong though! My mum has a Sunbeam stand mixer that was a wedding present in 1959 and it is still going strong too, and she has used it a lot over the years. They have an identical one in the Castle Museum in York, as an example of what a mid century housewife would have in her kitchen, it gave us all a laugh when we saw it. So if our KAs are as long lasting as those old fashioned Sunbeams, we'll get our moneys worth!

Jins · 17/03/2012 10:01

Frosting recipe here

I have to say it had a mixed reaction here. DH thought it was great straight out of the bowl but not so great on a cake. The others thought it was OK but preferred buttercream. I preferred it.

Just made shortcrust pastry for the first time. The KA certainly knows how to rub fat into flour :) It's chilling for this evening so will not know how it turns out until much later
