Foods you can't BEAR to put in your mouth

I wondered what other people's idea of nightmare food was. What would trigger your gag reflex if you tried to eat it? Particularly everyday sort of stuff. I could not eat, if you offered me a thousand quid, egg white or cottage cheese. I can do meringue, and scrambled egg as long as you can't see the white, but if I have poached/boiled/fried egg, have to cut every bit of white off. Friends say I'm weird.

Okra. Who on earth was the first person to bung it in a pan and think, "Hey, look at all the spunk mucous oozing out of it. That'll make a nice dinner"?

TaffetaCat · 10/04/2011 20:11

My favourite smell in the food world is celeriac, and unsurprisngly I love eating it too, and celery. And their soups, yum.

I'm not keen on English mustard, wasabi or peas. Wasabi peas are my nightmare! Although I like raw home grown peas.

My one gag induced food is butterbeans, big ole ones with leathery jackets. My mum used to keep a bag of them in the freezer and make me eat them. I used to retch. Again, I love home grown raw broad beans.

wehopeyoulikespaghetti · 10/04/2011 20:11

coleslaw.

dearprudence · 10/04/2011 20:13

Wet egg.
Goat's cheese.
Blue cheese.
Seafood.
Taramasolata.
Offal.
Black pudding.
Any fat on meat.
Chicken leg or skin.

Probably loads more. I am a fussy sod.

dearprudence · 10/04/2011 20:14

And olives (bleurgh).
Chinese takeaway.

PatTheHammer · 10/04/2011 20:18

chinese takeaway...............what, all of it?????

Or just the MSG sauces?

Grin at Okra oozing out spunk!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/04/2011 20:20

Egg yolk
mouldy blue cheese
Prawns/oysters/slimy things

There are lots of other things I hate but those would make me vomit as soon as they touched my lips.

ronx · 10/04/2011 20:20

Brussels sprouts.
Enough said.

hormonesnomore · 10/04/2011 20:25

"Tomato ketchup on fried eggs makes me retch." Me too, TheVisitor - individually, they're fine but together - bleugh.

I wouldn't eat tripe if you paid me.

And I can't stand porridge.

When I was a child, I retched at baked beans, scrambled eggs, Heinz vegetable soup - I'm still a bit meh about them.

shmoz · 10/04/2011 20:28

English mustard, just the smell makes me want to barf, yuk
Gherkins
Offal especially tripe, liver and haggis
Celery
Salad Cream
Prawns
Rollmop herrings
Piccalilli
Smoked reindeer, twas truly vile

FriskyMare · 10/04/2011 20:29

rice pudding
creme caramel
eggs of any description other than hard boiled
heinz ravioli
brie

PigeonPie · 10/04/2011 20:38

Broad beans - can't stand the flavour, texture or anything of them.

Hot milk (which my DSs drink gallons of).

EasterEggsHaveNoCalories · 10/04/2011 20:48

Oysters. Anything involving uncooked egg whites, including lemon meringue pie - I just imagine little salmonella bugs clambering all over the place.

monkeyfacegrace · 10/04/2011 20:55

I can eat most things to be polite.

To guarentee a retch within seconds (literally, gag and vom), give me cheese and onion crisps, or coleslaw. BLEUGH.

SlackSally · 10/04/2011 21:34

I can't think of a single thing I wouldn't eat for £1000.

I can't think of much I wouldn't eat for £100...

carries · 10/04/2011 22:12

Pate, liver, cod roe, tripe, venison will make me retch if the flavour touches my mouth.

Can eat most other foods but don't enjoy branston pickle, salad cream, sandwich spread or cheese and onion crisps.

girliefriend · 10/04/2011 22:14

the only one I could not put in mouth is a tomato - bleughhhh!

How anyone can eat one is beyond me!!!

dearprudence · 10/04/2011 22:29

Yes, Pat. All chinese takeaway. Just the smell of it is vile.

boosmummie · 10/04/2011 22:48

Will eat almost anything apart from....

Parsnips
Butter bans/cannelloni beans and any of that ilk - texture just vile
As above with fried egg and ketchup - smells of sick, but individually no problem with either
Baked beans
Tripe

Would not and could not eat any of the above for a grand...

bessie26 · 10/04/2011 23:25

Anything wibbly. So stuff like jelly, panacotta, even creme brûlée/caramel.

And okra.

And scrambled egg with milk in it so it's too moist. (why does MIL do that?)

gastrognome · 11/04/2011 11:05

Rice pudding. Have tried and tried to like it but I just cannot put it in my mouth without retching.

Also treacle.
And any kind of steamed sponge/suet type pudding.
So treacle pudding is obviously my worst nightmare!
Even sticky toffee pudding makes me heave.

Oh, and porridge. Bleurch.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/04/2011 13:18

Any fish except canned tuna and it must be in oil.
Any lamb/mutton - too much as a child
Any offal
Any seafood
Sweet potatoes - why?

headache · 12/04/2011 13:22

celery
liquorice
prawns
whelks
any offal
liver
anything with loads of animal fat on it
pork
kebab meat
sausages
anything with a bone still attached

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/04/2011 13:27

You are right about chinese takeaway. It is disgusting gloop wherever you get it from. I would eat it for a grand though.

I used to loathe, detest and retch at bananas, however I have recently discovered I can eat them when in banoffee pie. Put the thought of peeling a banana and putting it in my mouth fellatio stylee still makes me shudder.

Broad beans are shite. Why eat grey beans?

I don't much like offal other than kidneys or liver, but again the thought doesn't make me gag.

Oh I have ust thought of one - the strawberry and orange creams in a tin of Quality Street, and the coffee ones in Revels. Sweets of sadism.

iklboo · 12/04/2011 13:36

I seriously, seriously, seriously loathe
Porridge
Rice pudding/Semolina/Tapioca
Olives
Squid/Octopus
Oysters/Cockles/Mussels/Whelks
Blue cheese
Meat with loads of fat on it (I have surgeon's skills excising meat from fat)
Any offal
Haggis
Snails
Cooked egg whites

But for £1000 I might be persuaded. Depends on how much of them I'd have to eat. And low long I'd have to keep it down for!
