Anyone seen? With Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Saw it this evening,
Sort of like War of the Roses, hysterically laugh out loud funny in parts, Olivia is just wonderful. Some quite sad moments too. Recommended!

I agree. I was quite shocked actually

All the good parts were in the trailer. The rest was mostly bad.

Yes. I saw it on the strength of the trailer and you’re right, all the best parts are there

I’m glad others feel underwhelmed

Sausagenbacon · 02/09/2025 21:39

We saw Caught Stealing tonight. MUCH more fun

rosegoldwatcher · 03/09/2025 17:20

Saw it today, at a Silver Screening. A small, comfortable cinema, which was pretty full.
I hated it. Very sweary and so much passive aggression. Horrible!

The swearing didn't bother me and in the original 'The War of the Roses', the passive aggression was funny. In this version, it's overdone and tedious.

I really loved the original.

Cloverforever · 03/09/2025 17:59

I saw it last night with 3 friends, and we all loved it!

CountryQueen · 03/09/2025 18:09

Friends said the same about the swearing and they’re not prudes. Won’t bother with it

JesseGator · 03/09/2025 18:39

Olivia Coleman isn’t half as funny as she thinks she is. Her comedy performances are always too manic and broad. She’s better in dramatic roles.

Come to think of it, I thought that she spoiled Wicked Little Letters.

IwanttotakeyoutoaNailaBar · 03/09/2025 19:01

I absolutely detested Wicked Little Letters. So twee.
OC always plays everything as middle class. Safe as.

BashfulClam · 03/09/2025 19:15

It was ok. That’s all nothing fabulous about it.

I agree with you - she was brilliant in Broadchurch, The Night Manager and as Anthony Hopkins' daughter in The Father.

Countrylife2002 · 06/09/2025 22:15

Just back from it and I loved it, laughed all the way through. Love the ending, didn’t notice the swearing but me and dd swear all the time so that’s probably why.
reminds me of Heathers in its darkness.
i absolutely adored it and will be watching it again for sure. Possibly in part because I’ve had a toxic divorce and it’s cathartic! Also my judge was just like Allison Janney so that did make me laugh.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 06/09/2025 22:20

I laughed out loud quite a lot but was kind of bored in between but I’ve trashed my concentration span on MN so only myself to blame. I agree with PP that OC is a much better straight actor than comic actor.

TheRavagesOfThyme · 06/09/2025 22:34

I love the original "War of the Roses", and watch it every Christmas 😄. Douglas and Turner are perfect in it. Not a fan of OC or BC (both come across as insufferably smug) so will give this remake a miss.

I loved it at the time, but have never rewatchted it.
Perhaps I should rewatch it this Christmas. I like a good film at christmas but nothing schmaltzy.

It's fun, I saw it last night and the cinema was full.
It was filmed in Devon - Salcombe - instead of North California where it is set so it's fun spotting the locations.

I didn't know that - thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed it. I laughed a lot.

As another earlier poster, I loved a lot of what OC was wearing. She had some great earrings too.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/09/2025 09:09

i loved the original War of the Roses and am looking forward to seeing this

GlassofRosePorfavor · 07/09/2025 09:12

Ive got the book to read first so I'll give that a go.

Every time I hear Benedict's name I think of the mumsnetter with the user name

bendydickcomeinmysnatch

i can't be the only one!

deeahgwitch · 07/09/2025 09:24

I can’t imagine them as a couple as I thought she was much older than him.
Lots of people think he is gorgeous- I can’t see it myself.
Based on this thread and the positive comments on here I will go and see it.
DH and I haven’t been to the cinema in ages.

Tcateh · 07/09/2025 09:24

I'll be interested to see it as it was filmed near where I live last summer. I'll probably wait tho. It's made me want to rewatch the first one which I remember being really good.
Disappointed I didn't bump in to Benedict tho.

Tillygan60 · 07/09/2025 17:11

Saw it this week-a bit sweary and OC is her usual " look at me" self! Despite all that it was a good, funny watch.

stillavid · 07/09/2025 17:20

Glad other people just didn't buy them as a couple.

It was amusing but not amazing. But I am not an Olivia fan.

I won't be going to see it. Anaphylaxis is a serious medical condition and this film trivialises it and spreads misinformation for cheap laughs.

This. Dangerously misleading to suggest that anaphylaxis can be reversed by an EpiPen administered in the arm - completely wrong.
