Anyone seen? With Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Saw it this evening,
Sort of like War of the Roses, hysterically laugh out loud funny in parts, Olivia is just wonderful. Some quite sad moments too. Recommended!

Just watched it. Thought it was good, but glad I didn't see it in the cinema as not that good.

Weird that they filmed it in Devon and pretended it was Cailfornia. Why not pretend its the East Coast of America? That would be more believable in terms of habitat.

Which bit of Devon , North or South Coast?

Salcombe. The cafe in the film is the Winking Prawn.

I won't be going to see it. Anaphylaxis is a serious medical condition and this film trivialises it and spreads misinformation for cheap laughs.

I am appalled this was in the film, so irresponsible. I preferred the original where there was really chemistry. Olivia Coleman looks like everyone's mum like a PP said.

Meredusoleil · 07/12/2025 07:34

Also, what was with sticking the epipen into her arm?!? I thought it was always supposed to go into the thigh?

Yes, can someone please explain the ending. If they do blow themselves up - what a terrible thing to do to their kids. Cumberbatch Flambé.

I think the writers were trying a similar ending to the first film - a slightly ambiguous ending in terms of whether the Roses survive or not.

I don’t think it works. in the first film it really does. However, I think I prefer this version to the original which is so dark, although its lead actors have far more charisma and electricity. This version has more light and shade, I think.

Thanks for the explanation!

paranoidnamechanger · 07/12/2025 09:42

Douglas and Turner had charisma and electricity by the bucketload. You can easily imagine their characters in The War of the Roses having (and enjoying) sex, unlike BC and OC.

whirlyhead · 07/12/2025 09:54

I just watched it on Disney+ and quite enjoyed it. OC’s wardrobe was fab and that house… oh my god it was gorgeous! Not at all bothered by the swearing; people swear and OC is renowned for being very sweary. I hear worse language from Spanish people when playing padel with them.

khfippjjj · 07/12/2025 10:13

It’s black comedy, people calling it “irresponsible” and “terrible thing to do to their kids” are taking it too seriously.

IAmKerplunk · 07/12/2025 10:15

I really want to see this (love BC!) but never go to the cinema as I fall asleep before the adverts have finished so I shall wait until it appears on a streaming service - hopefully not too long

It’s already on one - Disney +.

Ooh really? Thank you for that - that’s my afternoon sorted 😀

Mum2Fergus · 07/12/2025 10:23

I loved it! OC and BC are brilliant together.

I’m the opposite, @IAmKerplunk - no matter how much I want to see something, twenty minutes into watching it on my laptop I’m drifting off, and have to scroll back. In the past few months I’ve been winding up all my streaming subscriptions and have taken out membership of my local cinema.

I can't imagine those too having sex with anyone (and I don't wish to!) let alone each other.

Who are you referring to?

BC and OC. Actually I don't want to imagine anyone having sex with anyone - except me.

Not really. We're discussing it within the fictional space, not real life. I was alluding to, you know, narrative clarity and plausibility. There isn't really enough space here to go into full explanations.

You’re trying to apply our reality to a world built in the context of a black comedy film. It’s not a drama, it’s not trying to be realistic nor delve into the morality of parenting, it’s a dark twisted comical take on a marriage.

Supersimkin7 · 07/12/2025 16:25

I cried with laffs. And just cried.

Pure perfect entertainment.

mondaytosunday · 07/12/2025 16:48

I thought it was just ok. And what an asshole - wife all supportive of his career and he makes patronising concessions to hers then when he hit the skids and she’s successful he’s a sulky toddler and can’t be happy for her. That EpiPen stuff was unbelievably poor. I thought it was well acted even if only slightly amusing.

FeliciaFancybottom · 07/12/2025 18:06

I couldn't make it all the way through. There's zero chemistry between the two leads and it just wasn't funny.

Glad I wasn't the only one - I seriously considered giving up part way through too.

Mumsknot · 07/12/2025 19:14

I didn’t like it. Almost couldn’t finish it. But did like the sea and the house!

You can’t control my experience of it and the questions that popped into my head while I was watching it. That’s mine. You can’t tell me what I should or shouldn’t think about a film.

paranoidnamechanger · 07/12/2025 20:38

A comedy has to be heightened in some ways, be that the story or the acting or the direction or something else. But it also has to have some degree of credibility and that’s where this film fails because the two main actors just aren’t believable as a couple.
