Anyone seen? With Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Saw it this evening,
Sort of like War of the Roses, hysterically laugh out loud funny in parts, Olivia is just wonderful. Some quite sad moments too. Recommended!

Another person who has just watched it, and only £4 for all cinema tickets this weekend at Cineworld!
really enjoyable!

We went to Jaws in IMAX instead 😂

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 31/08/2025 09:57

@jamnpancakes Went to see Jaw the day before with 14yo DS - slightly embarrassed him by screaming out loud when the face floated up at the port hole!

mondaytosunday · 31/08/2025 10:11

It keeps popping up in my FB feed and I almost feel like I’ve seen the whole thing as the clips are all different! Loved the original and I had to look up the relative ages of Cumberbatch and Colman - maybe as she seems to play older women I thought she was much older than him (he’s 49, she’s 51) so I am struggling to imagine them as a couple so glad people are saying it works. I’ll wait for it to be streamed though.

tennissquare · 31/08/2025 10:17

It's fun, I saw it last night and the cinema was full.
It was filmed in Devon - Salcombe - instead of North California where it is set so it's fun spotting the locations.

PickledOnionOverdose · 31/08/2025 10:54

I thought they had zero chemistry. She almost seemed like his mother. Also too much pointless swearing for me. I found it amusing but not laugh out loud funny. We were at a Vue last night and it was only a third full.

Oh that was me too 😂😂 I listened to various kids talking about it on the way out and they seemed happy with it 😂 one said better than the Meg! It certainly made you tense throughout 😂

HaughtyAndCold · 31/08/2025 20:30

I saw it today and thought it was great

I think I’d enjoy it but I just cannot stand Olivia Coleman. She’s so insufferably up herself, and actually outright rude to people in interviews etc but gets away with it by playing a ditzy English lass or pretending to be self-deprecating. She’s very arrogant and barely keeps a lid on it. Shame, as the rest of the cast is amazing.

My feelings about Olivia exactly, although I seem very much in the minority .

I agree although I did enjoy the film. You just had to imagine that they are married to someone they really fancied initially!

Also I liked the ending
🙂

Am planning to see this - the trailer looked great.

Initially? I think BC is looking fabulous at the moment!

To be fair in real life it's often the men who are punching, so I found this refreshingly realistic. I think her character suits the dynamic well.

tfu · 31/08/2025 20:49

I also went to see it at Cineworld on the £4 offer last night. Big fan of the original movie and I enjoyed this remake too especially the ending. When I got home I watched the original and it was glorious as ever.

SaratogaFilly · 31/08/2025 20:53

Was the ending the same as the original @tfu?

Tiredofwhataboutery · 31/08/2025 20:57

How similar is it to the original? Micheal Douglas pissing on the fish during the dinner party was I think really memorable and funny in a shocked sort of way. Loved it.

I agree. I’m impressed with his calves also.

He does have quite a reserved, slightly dour demeanour and Olivia’s smiley, character didn’t really work with his.
Also she wasn’t really a believable chef. Can’t put my finger on why but I inwardly winced when got people to taste her powdered whatever and at the scene with the food critic.

They argued well together though.

JesseGator · 01/09/2025 07:29

Saw it yesterday and thought it was ok but not great, it’s not terribly cinematic so would have been better on the telly through a streaming service, cinema is very expensive if you don’t get a deal.

I love Andy Samberg so was a bit disappointed he didn’t get more screen time.

Abracadabra12345 · 01/09/2025 15:32

I saw it today and think I’d rate it B for quality and D for personal enjoyment. It felt so bleak - all the vitriol towards each other. Some moments of honesty and comedy too

I preferred The Thursday Murder Club for enjoyability despite the scathing criticisms 😁

BeaLola · 01/09/2025 15:48

I remember the original with Douglas & Turner.
I'm in the minority as I do t get the live for Benedict Cumberbatch , though to be fair I'm not a huge Olivia Colman fan either - not sure why ?

Theraffarian · 01/09/2025 15:55

Thought it was watchable for £4 a head cineworld tickets yesterday. Actually thought the trailer for I Swear about the lad with Tourette’s that’s due out soon looked good ( obvs not for those that don’t like rude words though ) .

LillyPJ · 01/09/2025 22:14

I saw it today and was really disappointed. I loved 'The War of the Roses' but this version didn't work at all. Olivia Coleman's character was unbelievable on many levels, there was no chemistry between the two of them, and the pace was all wrong. I laughed once near the beginning - then I got increasingly bored and came out feeling angry that I'd wasted my time and money.

LillyPJ · 01/09/2025 22:17

paranoidnamechanger · 30/08/2025 10:36

I liked the original so this does intrigue me, but I can’t buy these two as a couple. I’ve just read it’s flopping, so should be out on Disney + in a couple of months’ time.

I liked the original too and this was bad. I can understand why it's flopping. And they were unbelievable as a couple.

RoverReturn · 31/08/2025 20:39

All the good parts were in the trailer. The rest was mostly bad.

Sausagenbacon · 01/09/2025 22:21

Just seen it at the lovely (and cheap) cinema in Coleford.
Way too long and OC too one note for me. But I loved her clothes. And the house.
Wanted to see more Adam Samburg.
I did laugh out loud now and again

TheFifthTellytubby · 01/09/2025 22:29

I won't be going to see it. Anaphylaxis is a serious medical condition and this film trivialises it and spreads misinformation for cheap laughs.
