Ding fucking Dong!

What a lovely, if emotional watch.

Favourite bits:

Bridget getting her diary and pen out again and the film “truly” starting.

“Modern Love” dance with the kids.

Flash backs to Mark.

Cleaver remembering he has an estranged son and making contact.

🤣🤣 Tesco meal deal faux pas

🤣🤣🤣 “I had the most amazing sex” in front of a studio audience

Daniel and Bridget’s relationship now.

🥲🥲🥲 Bridget’s dad in his last days.

🥲🥲 Bridget realising that the relationship with Roxter cannot continue

🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 “I’ll do anything”

Modern Love made me dance and cry
Her last memories with her Dad floored me but I've lost both parents recently .

It's ..... good

Eaumyword · 14/02/2025 07:15

All of the above but especially the hospital/hospice scene with her and her dad. Just the two of them plotting with a sausage! Such a tender moment and one referenced by earlier books/films when mum has said it's always been dad and daughter and she felt left out.

The I'll do anything solo utterly undid us. The silent howl of recognition and pain Bridget does is heart wrenching and beautifully acted.

Loved that loads of the 'original' team were in it - felt like a lovely goodbye to the character.

Billi80 · 14/02/2025 07:15

Such a beautiful film. A master class in screenwriting and casting. The kids! Too many favourite bits to list them all but mostly loved the bits with the kids and their little arc. The only thing I’d change is more of Bridget’s Mum as I love Gemma jones and she’s so important and maybe less of the work friends/work bits.
Leo and Chiwetel amazing. Emma Thompson flawless and loved Perfecr Nicolette. And Hugh grant what a legend. But Renee Z is up there with the greats for me. Pushes it to almost being OTT and always keeps the balance.

Eaumyword · 14/02/2025 07:20

She's got great comedy timing hasn't she! When she falls over on the outward bound bridge!😆
Loved the outward bound moment with Mr Wallaker and Billy when he explains his dad is in him. Gulp.
Agree with the way Daniel and Bridget have evolved into friends - family, even.

Londonnight · 14/02/2025 07:46

Saw it yesterday, absolutely loved it!

Karmaisagod · 14/02/2025 14:50

I've asked this on the non-spoiler thread, too: I watched the film last night and I'm trawling through soundtrack listings looking for one of the songs. I recognised it and love it, but I can't remember what it is, and it doesn't appear in any of the soundtrack lists I've found. It's instrumental and electronic-ish, I think. It played fairly early on in scenes in her house. Does anyone know which song I'm talking about? I'm getting desperate.

Cynic17 · 14/02/2025 16:05

Loved Daniel, Mr W and especially the wonderful boy playing young Billy.

The plot was a (deliberate) mirror of the first film, with the two "suitors" - a racy one and a stiff, serious one - ending with the kiss in the snow. But, as we know, it's basically "Pride and Prejudice".

The drunk friends didn't add much, really, but it was nice to see them again.

I don't believe that a "real" person would have got through what Bridget has and still be so useless and ditsy, but I get that that's the character. As if she would have just walked back into a job in TV?!
I do worry a bit about whatever Renee Z has done to her face.

Loved Bridget's house, and Hampstead looked gorgeous.
The reindeer jumper 😢
The owl flying away from the garden 😢😢

This is interesting as I was disappointed in the book and felt it was really all over the place (the writing of her play ‘the leaves in his hair’ and not knowing who wrote Hedda Gabler or something I think it was, at the time it really annoyed me)

But reading this thread has actually made me want to see the film take on it.

denhaag · 14/02/2025 17:24

Went last night. Some proper laugh out loud parts.
Elements of Motherland.
Half expected Paddington to pop up!
Loved that all the actors returned.
Much more poignant than the others.
Emma Thompson - excellent.

Yamyamabroad · 14/02/2025 17:34

Just got back, loved it but needed my tissues! London looked beautiful.
@karmaisagod, could it be the lovely version of "Give a little respect", you are thinking of? This version is by the Hanseroth Twins but the original is Erasure.

It’s from the album Moon Safari by Air. I’d have to watch it again to know which song but I recognised it at the time. If this is the same song you mean then you’ll find it on that album.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 14/02/2025 17:49

@Karmaisagod Pretty sure it’s Ce Matin Là from Moon Safari. It’s when she met Roxster, though, so not sure if it’s the song you’re after if you thought it was when she was in her house.

Rugbyrover · 14/02/2025 17:56

I felt more sad watching it than I'd thought I would - but I think a lot of us have, like Bridget, gone through various losses and changes since our 20s so it resonated.

DoingthefullGareth · 14/02/2025 18:02

Oh, of course everyone had aged- Bar Bridget’s mum!

loved that the see through top that she used to wear to work with her “ridiculous skirt” was an option to wear for her date. 🤣

ConstantlyFuriosa · 14/02/2025 18:13

Also the blue floral dress she wore and the blue jacket were from previous films. There were a lot of throwbacks actually. I quite liked that.

Edited

Thank you! It's not that one, but it was lovely.

Thank you, I think that's the one!!! At the time I was thinking Air or Lemonjelly or something like that. What a relief. For some reason it isn't shown on the lists I found online.

Thank you!!! I could be mixed up about what was showing at the time. As soon as I can i will listen to it.

You’re very welcome. I’m positive it is Ce Matin Là. Glad to help - it’s always so frustrating when you can’t remember something and it’s on the edge of your memory.

When they played that song I was so happy because I love it. Also a fan of Lemonjelly. (You have good taste!)

Thank you. Moon Safari is an absolute classic, isn't it? I spent hours last night trying to find the song. In the cinema i was about to whip out my phone to Shazam, but thought I might get kicked out 😁

VanillaImpulse · 14/02/2025 19:26

Lots missed from the book so
I recommend you read that as well as the whole storyline with her neighbour was not included.
Also the book has lots of details about her mums antics in the nursing home.

Felt it had more sad moments than humour

Karmaisagod · 14/02/2025 19:28

Was Isla Blair meant to be Helena Bonham Carter? Bridget said something about never meeting your heroes. I thought we might see more of her.

I adore Moon Safari. Think it’s time for a revisit.

Yeah, I was a bit wtf at her cameo, tbh. Why her?!

edited to say I like her, but never heard her mentioned or anything so I didn’t get it. Also, why did they pick Ricky Gervais to be the showbiz diva with his rider demands? Maybe he’s really easy going and just asks for a can of coke!

Bringmeahigherlove · 14/02/2025 19:35

I loved it! Laughing one minute and crying the next. Roxster was also easy on the eye.
