Ding fucking Dong!

What a lovely, if emotional watch.

Favourite bits:

Bridget getting her diary and pen out again and the film “truly” starting.

“Modern Love” dance with the kids.

Flash backs to Mark.

Cleaver remembering he has an estranged son and making contact.

🤣🤣 Tesco meal deal faux pas

🤣🤣🤣 “I had the most amazing sex” in front of a studio audience

Daniel and Bridget’s relationship now.

🥲🥲🥲 Bridget’s dad in his last days.

🥲🥲 Bridget realising that the relationship with Roxter cannot continue

🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 “I’ll do anything”

OP posts:

How is a reference to a previous film in the same series of films an Easter egg? It's like saying "hey she was called Bridget in the last film too!"

Dunno but that’s what they’re calling them on the internet articles I’ve seen!

Edit. But they’re not references as such. They’re little things you either notice and get a little buzz out of (or not).

Plus the name Roxster is pretty cringe. Is it supposed to be a play on rock star? If so, yuk.

I agree. I was wondering if that was actually his real name?

HeyIAmGlidingHere · 18/02/2025 10:52

Made me think of Kate Winslett's Ned Rocknroll.
Just no.

HeyIAmGlidingHere · 18/02/2025 11:00

Roxby McDuff apparently.
But nn Roxter as many thought he was a rock star or summat. If I say I'm a ting, I'm a ting. Wink

I haven’t seen the film yet . Is it better than Bridget Jones baby as I wasn’t overly keen on that one. I loved Leo in one day but don’t think the chemistry is right here if someone looks young enough to be your son ….May change my mind when I actually see the film though.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 18/02/2025 11:15

The condom scene in the chemist, since when would a shop assistant read out each item loudly ?!

Because they don't affect the plot. A pp is right that they used to be hidden extras (like in a game you could unlock a room etc via a secret code) but now are kind of geeky references you might spot.

Just back from the cinema - thought it was better than BJB ( not difficult , IMHO ) but really didn’t believe in the Roxter relationship, he looked soooo much younger.
Uncomfortable at the 50- something women eyeing him up after the swimming
pool rescue . Presumably as a nod to a certain much earlier wet white shirt incident ….. no comparison.
On that note , was hoping for more appearances from MD .
Overall , I found the film disappointing.

I hated the balloon bit too - I was just thinking ‘pollution!’ so I didn’t find it at all moving.

Again, because I'm a worrier, my main anxiety about the balloons was that the chance of no one letting one go by accident before they got to Primrose Hill were minuscule.🙄

Having a pic of Daniel having survived the plane crash is a direct reference to the end of the previous film, I just don't see it as anything special or "in the know".

I think it’s down to whether you spot these things or not that gives them the Easter egg tag. They’re not always blindingly obvious, although of course some are.

But hey, I don’t make the rules! The internet calls the shots these days.

Right. That’s a reminder maybe. The blue cocktail/blue soup is not. Honestly it’s not that deep.

Easter eggs are often now hidden in plain sight, alluding to what has happened before...the most ambitious of this was the finale of Inside No.9 which went into double figures with an allusion in every scene. A love letter to the fans.

madmumofteens · 18/02/2025 23:06

I loved it I feel I've grown up with Bridget with all the highs and lows would have loved to have seen Mark and Bridget in the early years though and seeing the parenting dynamic 🥹

Nitgel · 18/02/2025 23:10

Seemed like such a formulated film. Shame really. The colin firth owl flying off really made me laugh.

I've asked this on the non-spoiler thread, too: I watched the film last night and I'm trawling through soundtrack listings looking for one of the songs. I recognised it and love it, but I can't remember what it is, and it doesn't appear in any of the soundtrack lists I've found. It's instrumental and electronic-ish, I think. It played fairly early on in scenes in her house. Does anyone know which song I'm talking about? I'm getting desperate.

Sorry if someone's already answered this but it's Groove Armada 😊

greengreyblue · 19/02/2025 08:30

Just for the record, as a 53 year old woman. If I admire a much younger man( that is an adult) I am not a perve!! You do t stop having normal feelings you know.

DontTellMeWhat2Do · 19/02/2025 16:02

re: the easter eggs, nice, but most people who see Bridget Jones 4 will have seen the previous films, so they weren't really necessary and the time would have been better spent expanding some storylines - eg I would have loved to see Nicolette get told off by Briget and the other mums admiring Bridget or something like that.
Daniel came off as more sleazy than in previous films. Almost like it was forced and unnatural and he wasn't at all sexy (okay so he's older now so maybe that's why it was less funny). Leo is not sexy - DD agrees with me on that one - so it didn't really work for me.
I did like the mum / school gate frustrations and could relate to the toilet 'I just want some bloody peace' scene!
Oh and Jude was wierding me out by acting really drunk in every scene and Tom - wtf - he's aged badly.

Just to reiterate, it’s not admiring a man because he is young, it’s admiring his appearance/ character/ hunour regardless of him being younger.

Salacia · 19/02/2025 16:33

I’m not sure I liked it. There were parts I enjoyed (all of the Emma Thompson scenes, Jim Broadbent’s scene) but I think it was a missed opportunity to revert to the standard love triangle.

I’d have much rather had the focus been on her reclaiming her career, her sense of self etc. Maybe develop her relationships with the school mums more - that they actually admire her for her resilience in bringing up her kids regardless of if she’s in pyjamas at the school gates or forgets to bring in stuff for the raffle. Have readjusting to work be more of an issue (they set this up but then she was just magically an amazing producer who could do anything and absolutely no problems with juggling the kids and work etc). She still could have had a one night stand with the younger man, the flirtation with the teacher but leave it open that she’s able to move on from Mark. The son being withdrawn arc could have been done as he feels insecure that she’s back at work, maybe he sees the one night stand leaving - he feels like his mum is moving on and forgetting his dad. I’d have also loved a scene with her mum - especially as they’re both widowed. Instead it’s the same cliched running through the snow after a man - she can’t be content and single.

If it had gone all in on the the rom com I wouldn’t have minded so much but it actually did some really nice reflective moments on grief that then going straight back to the cliché jarred. It felt like it didn’t have the confidence to be anything other than Bridget is stuck between two men, the fun one who she’s ultimately incompatible with and the buttoned up type who comes across as uninterested but appreciates her just as she is. There was a much more interesting film in there (and some lovely acting) but they just decided to copy and paste the plot from the first three films.

greengreyblue · 19/02/2025 20:27

I can’t get over her silly face! Not her actual face but the stupid expressions . Always thought an English actress would have been more natural. Kate Winslet for example. I’ve always thought her portrayal was a bit of a cliche and . All the swearing in front of children. I’ve never understood the Curtis era British films for consistently making it look like all middle class Brits are fuckety fuckers all day long.

I saw this the other day, loved it and had quite teary moments in the cinema Sad

That song was by Air called Ce matin-là

I still love that album Moon Safari, over 25 years ago!

Karmaisagod · 20/02/2025 07:28

Thank you, @KittyQuestions34 - another poster put me out of my misery and identified it as Ce Matin la by Air shortly after - thank you, too, @TurquoiseDress. Moon Safari is indeed an awesome album!
