I kept thinking the same thing re the house as when she was a singleton she wasn’t exactly loaded - although I used to love her little flat. But then I remembered that Mark Darcy was a ‘top human rights barrister’ and had probably had a lot of dosh.

In the book it's made much clearer, it explicitly says he had a lot of life insurance so that he knew his family would be well provided for. And it was implied that his family were rich, remember the parents house in the films?

This. Not forgetting Mark already owned that large modern house in London which was sold when he died as per the terms of his will and the new house was bought, also somehow planned by him, so that Bridget wouldn’t have to worry about money or a home etc

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/02/2025 08:43

I thought Mark would have had decent life insurance but actually Bridget would have made money on her original flat and would have been earning well in Tv work. Between them they would have been wealthy. Was it a private school? I couldn't decide.

If I was Bridget I'd have been furious Mark was going to dangerous countries leaving her with two young g children, the little girl would have been a baby.

drspouse · 18/02/2025 12:16

In the film it was definitely a private school, especially from the class sizes.
I just started the book so I can't work that out yet!

FrenchandSaunders · 18/02/2025 12:53

I was thinking that about state or private. Then I thought I bet there’s not many top barristers kids in state schools.

TheaBrandt1 · 18/02/2025 13:05

A state school would not have them all in
pristine matching raincoats!

Well I'm embarrassed. I always thought she killed Darcy off as an emotionally shabby shortcut to having a single protagonist again. I didn't realise her ex had actually died.

All the big romcom type shows and films struggle with this - how to get the relationship drama back for sequels when the audience is invested in a previous happy ending.

Killing Mr Big on a Peloton comes to mind, albeit he'd been cancelled anyway.

I don’t know why the media keeps pushing this story when he died three years after she’d killed off Darcy in the book. Maybe she used it to help with the film but the timeline doesn’t make sense to me.

Needmorelego · 19/02/2025 21:28

@EconomyClassRockstar the Darcy family were very rich.
I think Mark went to Eton.
There's no mention of Mark's parents so assuming they have passed away all the family money will have been inherited by Mark - and Bridget will have inherited it after his death.
Plus life insurance.

drspouse · 19/02/2025 22:40

In the book his parents are still alive and take the children on "individual short treats" and Mark used to hire a cook for Christmas dinner so nobody had to have Bridget's cooking.

BrandyandGinger · 19/02/2025 22:46

Jason Statham got a mention. I'm impressed with the filmmakers knowledge of their audience.
It's a sweet film. I really enjoyed it.

Ah I didn't remember that from the book.
Even so - the Darcy family are rich.
Bridget and the kids would have no financial problems.

EconomyClassRockstar · 19/02/2025 23:43

I LOVED Big dying on the Peloton. The rest of the reboot, not so much.

VenusStarr · 20/02/2025 07:08

I hated the book so wasn't massively in a rush to see it, but my sister wanted to go. Went last night and enjoyed it. I teared up at a few points which I wasn't expecting.
It did feel like the end, lots of nods to the first film and bringing some characters back in. I had very low expectations but did like it.

The only thing I didn't get was the neighbour (Isla Fisher) was she in another film, was quite random.

MagentaRocks · 20/02/2025 07:22

I saw it last night. I enjoyed it, better then the 3rd one. First one still my favourite

MrsPeterHarris · 20/02/2025 22:06

I agree @VenusStarr - no idea why she did the cameo or what it was meant to be about as she wasn't in any earlier movies. Bizarre!

BrandyandGinger · 20/02/2025 22:57

I can't remember the books in detail but when Bridget said to her children never meet your heroes I assumed that Isla Fisher was meant to be someone famous. Did Bridget look up to an actress in the style of Helena Bonham Carter?

I saw it last night. I was widowed suddenly almost 12 years ago when DS was 8 and DD was almost 5. I am 12 years on and we are all doing great but this film completely floored me. I have never seen such an accurate representation of how it feels to be suddenly left on your own with two little ones….trying to cope with your own grief while supporting them with theirs, never sure if you are doing the right things and worrying that if you mess things up they will scarred for life… keeping everything going…seeing married friends who try to empathise but will never truly know how alone one feels at times. Being married to a wonderful person and feeling devastated that his children will have almost no memory of the person who loved them so much. It was spot-on but I admit it was a heartbreaking watch for me. Take tissues!!!!!!

I went with my best friend and DD18 and we absolutely loved it - all emerged with tears. But it's complete fantasy and unlike most people's lived reality.

Bridget is left with a multi-million pound home by Hampstead Heath and of course snares a hot young lover (I've seen this played out in real life with more solvent divorcee friends).

The most unrealistic bit though was when she just walked back into a high powered producer role after a decade.

All in all though it was down to the feels - done by great actors you can guarantee that fantasy is just swallowed wholesale.

PassingStranger · 21/02/2025 13:53

From the threadstarter. I am going Sunday morning.

I haven't read the book but Isla Fisher implied in an interview with the Times that the part was bigger but got cut to the 1 scene.

YourChirpyFatball · 21/02/2025 19:54

Saw it this afternoon and enjoyed it and the various actors. I particularly liked the teacher. Lucky Bridget!
The young actor Leo Woodall reminded me so much of a very young David Essex. Again Lucky Bridget. The ghosting part caused a bad memory. Being picky though, wouldn't they both had to have matched on Tinder for him to be able to contact her? Overall it was worth a watch. Not enough of Gemma Jones but maybe she's winding down. I loved her in the first film.

CrushingOnRubies · 21/02/2025 21:07

I loved it

Bridget's hair annoyed me

I must have a heart of stone Billy's solo at the concert was the only bit where I was slightly cutting onions

Hugh Grant was great just the right side of creepy uncle

Great soundtrack and I liked the nods to previous films

Also didn't get the Isla fisher thing. I know it went over my mums head who was sat next to me. Has no idea who she is

The buying of the condoms was hilarious if slightly cringe as I said mum was sat next to me

PassingStranger · 23/02/2025 17:30

Watched today and enjoyed. Weren't the children great.
Definitely they have put it to bed now and no need for another one.
It's finished on a good note.

Not too.many in the cinema and it was great no noise, no people playing on their phones.
Some people online complaining about the balloon release. I thought they would.

And isn't she nearly 50 and old enough to be his mother?! Eeeew!!

Yes but she's not. No harm done. People don't just have relationships with people the same age.
