I've seen loads of posts today about Sinister being the scariest film ever.

Pffft. I watched Meghan is Missing this week, now traumatised.

And I can't ever erase The Green Inferno from my brain.

What are your worst?

When I was about 14 I watched American werewolf in London, took me ages to get the dream scenes out of my head! And the original salems lot, very dated but really stuck with me!

RosaBaby2 · 13/04/2024 22:21

Martyrs. The 2008 one.

Barleycat · 13/04/2024 22:24

The ring and the grudge both stuck in my head for far too long.

BlossomSewell · 13/04/2024 22:34

The Heretic back in the 70s, never watched anything similar ever since!

Hostel. I hate horror films and DH said it wasn't "that bad".

Hostel is the worst for me too. Could never go to an Eastern European country because of it 🤣🤣🤣

Blazingunicorns · 13/04/2024 22:38

Seconding the original Martyrs. It’s French as I remember? A great psychological horror film in my opinion.

My mum used to rent horror videos and we'd watch them together.
Yes, I know, first class parenting. What can I say 🤷

I'd say the worst was when she thought she'd rented the exorcist but she'd actually rented the sexorcist.

Me and my sister jumped a mile when our mother squealed, leaped out of her chair and cleared the room in what seemed like a single step and ejected the cassette from the video player.

Laughing away at this.
Exorcist is really unsettling. The creepy voice. Shudders at the thought.

I don't really like horror films. When DH watches one with me, we have to put "normal" TV on for another half hour and keep the hall light on. Pair of complete softies.

AnnieSnap · 13/04/2024 22:44

The Exorcist when I was only 14 (with make up on, they let girls into 18 screenings in those days). I was terrified, couldn’t sleep for months and had a light on overnight for 18 months. I’m 64 now and still can’t listen to Tubular Bells (the theme tune), or have the film on in the House. 😳

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/04/2024 22:45

One about a waxworks where Paris Hilton was impaled

AnnieSnap · 13/04/2024 22:47

Lots of people mentioning Wolf Creek. I get it. It was horrible, but isn’t that one more a violent thriller rather than horror? It gave me the creeps for a while after too.

American werewolf in London

A Serbian Film. I physically threw up watching it! You'll probably struggle to find it as it's banned in a lot of places.

A Serbian film was made as an experiment, it was never meant to be 'enjoyed'.

Human centipede 2 scarred my soul a bit. I spit on your grave 1 and 2 are very well made..the ones after are just daft. Tusk was more funny than anything.

I wish I found horror films like some.of you lot. Can't find a decent one these days.

daisydoo32 · 13/04/2024 22:52

Hostel is awful because you can imagine these things could actually happen. Ditto Wolf Creek.

The Ring traumatised me for years. And The Grudge. The kids are terrifying.

But the worst I've seen in recent years is Smile. So creepy and just disturbing.

Never subjected myself to anything like The Human Centipede or A Serbian Film. Why would you?

Generally I cope with gore quite well but the ones I've mentioned are more scary than gory. I actually find horror films like Wrong Turn etc quite comical for the sheer range of horrendous killings.

I saw Event Horizon at the cinema when I was in my 20s and for some reason found it absolutely terrifying. I’ve refused to watch it again so no idea if it would scare me now. I used to watch a lot of supernatural-type horror films as a teen and in my 20s (never liked things like Hostel or Saw) but that’s one that really stayed with me. Pet Sematery and IT also scared me when I saw them but I was probably too young to watch them really, in my early teens. Now I won’t watch anything at all like that, I don’t want the images in my head. I managed the first couple of season of American Horror Story but had to stop a couple of episodes into the Asylum series, and never went any further.

I loved event horizon years ago and found it terrifying. I recently watched it with my partner as he hadn't seen it and after bugging it up, found it a massive let down 😂.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/04/2024 21:42

Not a horror as such, but I am Legend really affected me for a long time. It's also not impossible. I probably sound ridiculous 🙃

You should watch the proper ending rather than the Hollywood ending we got. Shows him in a completely different light. Very clever.

RosaBaby2 · 13/04/2024 23:00

Also one of the Saw films, but just the part where the 'junkie' has to get in the needle pit that sticks with me 🤮

daisydoo32 · 13/04/2024 23:01

Marchintospring · 13/04/2024 20:55

The Ring is fantastic . Either version.
Love to know why the child is actually relentless..

I feel like the implication is she was just born evil.

LighthouseTheme · 13/04/2024 23:02

Wolf Creek is - I think - based on the real-life Backpacker Murders.

Awful, and frightening, film, I do think of it as horror.

Barbarachicken · 13/04/2024 23:08

Wolf Creek has stayed with me all these years, wish I'd never subjected myself to that.

Never watch horror any more, couldn't really cope with it then, and definitely can't now.

blue345 · 13/04/2024 23:09

Not really a true horror film but Cape Fear frightened me. Both tv series but the scene in The Fall where the girl is brushing her teeth and Jamie Dornan is visible in her mirror. We double locked our front door for a good month after.

But I was truly terrified as a child by a program called Maelstrom. Set somewhere in Scandinavia on a lake, the woman keeps going into a summerhouse with a room of dolls and the dolls start crying when she entered.

tangycheesythings · 13/04/2024 23:10

I'm going to unwatch this thread now as it really is horrible remembering some of these films, it's hampering my happy Spring vibe.

I wish I could 'unwatch' them too!

FriedGold · 13/04/2024 23:11

It’s not a horror, but Nocturnal Animals takes up a permanent space in my brain. It comes back to me randomly and I just wish I’d never watched it! Makes me feel sick how his wife and daughter are used and thrown away like they are garbage. Bleurgh.

alovelynight · 13/04/2024 23:13

I spit on your grave - I had to pause halfway through and finish the other half another time. So nasty
