I've seen loads of posts today about Sinister being the scariest film ever.

Pffft. I watched Meghan is Missing this week, now traumatised.

And I can't ever erase The Green Inferno from my brain.

What are your worst?

Not strictly a horror film but that nasty public information film they used to show in schools about fatal farming accidents. The Apaches.

When the gate falls on the boy and blood trickles from his ear ?

All of those films were the stuff of nightmares especially playing on the rail tracks.

Tbry24 · 13/04/2024 23:24

I like the clever rather than gory horrors. I have read a LOT of horror books too. Seen all the cult classics love most of those types already listed. Also love Japanese horrors the ring being utterly epic. Also love the exorcis.

the only one that gives me the goosebumps all these years later is not even scary and I’d seen it elsewhere and been ok. But we lived in an old house with a ‘presence’ growing up sort of house that gives other people the creeps. I was left up late at night watching the shining in the ‘creepy’ house and that was a step too far as whilst the film was playing there’s unexplained noises in the house and then had to dash up to bed. I was so scared running up the stairs that one time that anytime I’ve watched the film since I end up scared all over again. So silly as I absolutely love the book and King is my favourite author.

I spit on your grave is the worst thing I have ever seen and I don’t know how I got through it, it’s absolutely horrible.

spookysoul · 13/04/2024 23:31

The only horror film to ever give me nightmares is The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

Coshei · 13/04/2024 23:33

“A Serbian Film” is not a great film, but it’s not bad either, and I think reading a review doesn’t really translate it. The premise of the film is to invoke horrible thoughts in the viewer’s mind rather than having them witness them visually. It certainly stays with you for a while, but so do other films along the lines, such as “miss violence” and “dark crimes” etc.

Devilsmommy · 13/04/2024 23:46

I'm a massive horror fan so alot of these mentioned I've loved. The only film Ive ever been disturbed by is a Japanese one called Guinea Pig: Flowers of flesh and blood. Pretty title, disturbing content 😅

One about a waxworks where Paris Hilton was impaled

House of wax

I hate horrors but I hate ones like tusk and human centipede even more, I don't know what it is about them but they leave me thinking about them for weeks and weeks. I come across tusk when scrolling through movies the other day and couldn't get it out of my brain and now I'm thinking about it again. It freaks me out

Babyshambles90 · 13/04/2024 23:58

I’m not usually perturbed by horror films, but I found the Babadook very unsettling, for some reason. It wasn’t overt horror, but I wouldn’t willingly watch it again. Woman in black for jump scares!

Hostel. I hate horror films and DH said it wasn't "that bad".

Completely agree. I don't mind horror but don't love it like DD and DH do but this film really stuck with me. I think it because it feels like it could happen.

I haven't seen that in years! I remember swapping the videotape of it with my friend for something else when I was a youngster (Bun Man or Men Behind The Sun, if memory serves).

I thought Banshee Chapter was one of the dullest films I've ever seen and Green Inferno was absolute crap, although the plane crash was very well done - Eli Roth made Aftershock in Chile the year before and I suspect he just fancied fannying about in South America for a bit.

Serbian Film was hit and miss - I thought the 'twist' was predictable (and I didn't spot a similar one coming in Kill List) but it was well made and acted. Back on Kill List, I thought that was terrific, but I went in the completely blind having never heard of it and I think that's often a good way to do it. I do like Neil Maskell too, and I'll watch pretty much anything with him in it Smile

BridgetRandomfuck · 14/04/2024 00:45

I have seen many, many horror films as my DH is a fan. I’ve refused to watch Hostel as I know the plot, likewise Audition.

Ones I made him switch off were Wolf Creek as I cannot bear anything with sexual violence, likewise Cannibal Holocaust (he did apologise for showing me the uncut version). I was already ruling it out due to the animal deaths but we didn’t even get to that. Just horrific.

I saw Last House on the Left and really wish I hadn’t, there are images that are stuck with me unfortunately.

I suppose it has left me relatively unscathed for ‘normal’ horror! I can watch most scary films without batting an eyelid. But probably that’s not good!

I'm so glad I'm not the only person to have seen it 🤣

The Road, post apocalyptic but awful.

Have watched many horror films and none affected me except The Woman in Black.

The original I'm guessing 😳

Calvare

If you haven't - just don't!

Underrated shocker of a film

A Serbian Film. I physically threw up watching it! You'll probably struggle to find it as it's banned in a lot of places.

I saw it on YouTube

The Vanishing ( original Dutch Spoorloos ) is an absolute shocker
Highly recommended

SocksAndTheCity · 14/04/2024 02:17

If anybody has the TV on, The Autopsy Of Jane Doe starts on FilmFour in a couple of minutes

I saw it as a surprise festival film and thought it was a belter (Brian Cox is great in it but not as good as he was as Hannibal Lecktor).

Luckycloverz · 14/04/2024 02:33

Wolf Creek

I dont remember much of it now but several people in the cinema left midway, just something weird about it as have watched many similar films.

'The Finishing Line' is the worst one for me - I think because all the adults (teachers) are cheering the children on as they are killed and maimed.

Fullfatcokealltheway · 14/04/2024 06:57

I love all these films, mick taylor feom wolf creek is my favourite villan of all times, fantastic actor as is shown by how many people that can't finish off the movie! Tarrantino is also a huge fan of his let's hope he casts him in one of his movies soon!

hardyloveit · 14/04/2024 07:03

Oh I thought of another few!

The strangers - this actually terrifies me as could very much happen in real life!!

Drag me to hell was the first one to make me actually scream!

Love saw and hostel tho! Think hostel could def happen in real life too!! I went to the blue lagoon after watching hostel 2! That was a bit creepy

portocristo · 14/04/2024 07:10

The wrong turn

Tiptoptum · 14/04/2024 07:11

Hostel 1 & 2 but especially 1 (I watched 2 to be brave and convince myself it wasn’t that bad) the first one has stuck with me for 15 years and when I hear the whistling tune from the beginning, which is on a radio ad at the moment I go cold. There are a couple of scenes that have vividly stayed with me.

Wolf creek. Especially the “head on a stick”. Whole thing troubled me and I wouldn’t watch it again.

I spit on your grave (remake, original was banned when I was young) very unsettling.

Human centipede, has troubled me since I saw it.

I loved horror when I was young, but once I had children I think I lost my appetite for it, some of it is just too close for comfort.
