I've seen loads of posts today about Sinister being the scariest film ever.

Pffft. I watched Meghan is Missing this week, now traumatised.

And I can't ever erase The Green Inferno from my brain.

What are your worst?

The Descent - relentlessly terrifying plus awful depiction of female friendships. It's really stayed with me.

tangycheesythings · 13/04/2024 21:32

honestly don't do it @Soubriquet !

Grin

still wanna

DamnNutella · 13/04/2024 21:37

Another vote for Hostel. Even thinking about it now makes me feel upset. I think it’s because you can imagine it happening in real life. Just so horrible and sick

merrymelodies · 13/04/2024 21:40

Evil Dead scared me witless in the 80s.

I actually read somewhere it’s based on a potential true story.

The director fell into a rabbit hole when he went on the dark web and saw adverts literally for this. He never purchased it, but it gave him the idea for the film

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/04/2024 21:42

Not a horror as such, but I am Legend really affected me for a long time. It's also not impossible. I probably sound ridiculous 🙃

Ohyoudodoyou · 13/04/2024 21:42

I've seen most of these but only 'The Exorcist' had a real and staying impact on me. I watched the making of the film doc in my '20's and had to keep the lights after watching the deleted scene and I'm a hard bastard! Grin
'Midsommer' is disturbing and very good.
Something that scared me senseless want a film but a tv show 'lost hearts' from the '80's - M.R. James - absolutely terrified me as a kid and I can many of the influences of this in 'The League of Gentlemen'

DamnNutella · 13/04/2024 21:44

@Soubriquet sadly that doesn’t surprise me ☹️

Sharontheodopolodous · 13/04/2024 21:45

I watched one Years ago (I think) it was called 'death becomes her'
I think it had goodies Hawn in it
It gave me the Willie's so much,I had nightmares for years after

Another one I watched, was a true story about a family moved into a haunted house (could have been the 70's)
I remember a scene where the ghost was lying on top of a wardrobe
A lady couldn't do the exorcism so a bloke had to do it
They seemed to be sure god existed at the end

Honest to God,I've never watched another horror,my brain can't cope with them

Nairobiblue · 13/04/2024 21:45

8mm. Just hated it.

haveanothertea · 13/04/2024 21:46

The original IT. I watched it at a girl's sleepover in my early teens. Huge mistake!

I watched Megan is missing a few years back with
My eldest daughter , that film was such a hard watch
My scariest I think was Eden lake especially the last scene
I think the ones that you know could actually happen are what scare me the most more than the ghostly type ones

A Serbian Film. I physically threw up watching it! You'll probably struggle to find it as it's banned in a lot of places.

Banned in 46 countries, although the UK isn’t one of them. You can find it in HMV, but it’s missing 4 minutes (blame the BBFC). There was an uncut Blu ray release a few years ago in the US, which you can buy on Amazon if you’ve got a multi region player. UK probably won’t be far behind. In terms of content it’s probably one of the hardest watches I’ve had (the original I spit on your grave tops it for me).

REC terrified me.

Eden Lake - the accents are too familiar!

It Follows.

I like Wolf Creek. Think he’s one of the best modern horror film villains, can’t wait for the 3rd film.

Here for ideas!!

Friday the 13th in similar circumstances. I was about 12 (I'm 54 now!). So so disturbing. I saw it again years later and it was just gore and people putting themselves in utterly ridiculous situations so I could rationalise it. As a child it was horrifying!

ichundich · 13/04/2024 21:56

The Hole, Martyr

I keep seeing A Serbian film being the worst film to watch. I half want to watch it, but after reading the wiki, I mostly don’t.

I just read the wiki page and it's made me feel really anxious and sick. Who the fuck comes up with things like that!

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 13/04/2024 22:01

@InTheShallowTheShalalalalalalalow I never want to watch Mother! Again. In the same way I never want to watch Possession again. They were stressful to watch though and I couldn’t sleep after 😂

Climax is a great film with a similar fever pitch, and a bloody good soundtrack.

Afternoonsnooze · 13/04/2024 22:01

When I was 15 (back in the 80’s) my friend’s boyfriend worked in his families video shop and give her the R rated ones for us to watch (Nightmare on Elm Street, that kind of thing) but one that stayed with me was The Entity.

wendywoopywoo222 · 13/04/2024 22:02

I watched Paycho at 12 and that stayed with me.
And Wolf Creek.

InAMillion · 13/04/2024 22:02

Wolf Creek fir me too

I had nightmares for ages after

I hadn't heard of this one. I adored Valerie Harper as Rhoda and haven't seen her in anything non comedy.

It seems the whole movie (Which was made for TV) is on YouTube so am going to treat myself to some scary shit 😱👿

The Excorsist terrified me and The Devils too. Haven't seen many horror movies.

Oh yeah I loved Rhoda too.

I’d rather sit through The Exorsist and The Shining back to back than sit through that film again.
I was only 18 so maybe I remember it scarier than it was, but I don’t want to watch it again and find out

Enjoy!! 😱😄

HesterPrincess · 13/04/2024 22:10

The Strangers. That really messed with my head.

The Ring. Not even that scary but the horse jumping off the ferry really troubled me.

imforeverblowingbuttons · 13/04/2024 22:11

A film called Ouija board and The haunting. Terrifying 👻

The slasher films never bothered me.

LittleGreenDuck · 13/04/2024 22:14

Yep, The Descent here as well. Terrified me, couldn't wait for it to end and then just when I thought it had... it hadn't.

Otherwise I'm generally not fussed about films involving monsters or ghosts, I'm more disturbed by situations that could feasibly actually happen, such as Hostel or Saw.
