Went to see it today.

It was very good, but they have cut out a few of the songs from the stage musical and it's just a musical version of the 90s film.

It's also 2 hours long. Longer with all the trailers etc. it was good but it's coming to Netflix on Christmas Day so if there is no rush to see it in the cinema id save your money!

@Notanotherone6 I have to disagree I don't think Dahl specifies ms honey is white does he? Or that the class mates in Matilda's school are all white?

The excerpts I’ve seen look really good. I read that the brother has been cut, as has Rudolpho. The Russian mafia but too.

lots of ex west end cast kids in it.

Love Matilda but won't be watching this one. You can't change the entire premise of the story for the purpose of being pc.

And what premise would that be?

Explain? I thought the premise was child neglected by parents and finds teacher who helps her? Have I missed something?
Also which songs have they left out? Really looking forward to this so hope it lives up to my expectations

clockapp · 25/11/2022 19:40

@Comefromaway they mention the mafia but in passing, there is no brother. It's a good day out. Especially if your kids know the songs etc

What claptrap. Shows what you are, loud and clear.

Telly
And loud I think are the ones cut. Might be another one but not sure.

I think the best think is to ignore the racist poster

My kids are 18 & 21! But we will all be going. Probably separately though as Dd is currently in panto rehearsals & Ds at music conservatoire. We took them to watch the stage show when they were 8 & 10!

sashagabadon · 25/11/2022 19:43

Just watched it too. I really enjoyed it. It’s a great family movie and quite faithful to the film version. I loved the songs and the dancing and thought the young girl playing Matilda was fabulous. It looks like it’s filmed in the chilterns which is a beautiful place and the windmill was the same one in chitty chitty bang bang.
I would recommend it to anyone that likes musicals. My showing was packed full of kids with their mums and dads and some grandparents too. People clapped at the end!
I agree it’s a little long, it’s the Emma Thompson show in some extended bits but she plays trunchball perfectly.
I would say go and see it

Comefromaway · 25/11/2022 19:44

How has the premise of the story been changed?

dd sang quiet for her vocational school audition aged 11. We are convinced that the musical version of Matilda is an autistic savant and Quiet describes an autistic shutdown.

LadyKenya · 25/11/2022 19:45

I have not seen it yet, but look forward to doing so.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2022 19:46

@Freshmind001 well many people have said they didn't like the 90s film because it turned an English story (it's set near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire) into an American set story.
The stage version I believe is set in England. Like the original book 🤣

PizzaPizza56 · 25/11/2022 19:47

I think the PC comment is going to be to do with the fact that Trunchbull is Miss Honey's paternal aunt in the book.

I can't wait to see it!! Going next week 😁

clockapp · 25/11/2022 19:47

@Comefromaway that makes sense! Tim Minchin wrote the songs and lyrics etc and his daughter is autistic.

No the story hasn't changed it's just cut out a lot of the parent bits and condensed a little bit more. :)

Just got home from seeing Matilda - it is great (if about 30mins too long).

clockapp · 25/11/2022 19:49

@PizzaPizza56 I hope so because the main actress who plays miss honey is a person of colour, Matilda's class mates are very diverse too, and as a person of colour I found it so so refreshing.

So for me that comment screams racism.

Well perhaps Miss Trunchbull's brother married a black woman , and together they produced Miss Honey, not exactly rocket science. Also as any theatre goer will know it is not unusual to see The Von Trapp children played by a Chinese girl, an Indian boy, an African child a Caribbean child and whatever else. Just enjoy the story!

That’s exactly how we felt watching at the theatre, esp my eldest girl who is autistic. She really related to the song.

We’re looking forward to seeing this.

Can live with all of those gone

CatatonicLadybug · 25/11/2022 20:04

DS and I went today and it was a fab time. I am curious if they always intended to cut Loud, since it’s such a counterpart to Quiet. I did miss the comedy value of the brother from the stage show - always there but barely saying a word.

I love the staging of When I Grow Up in the play so much that the movie version will take some time to grow on me, but Revolting Children is so brilliant. We both said we could just watch that song on repeat!

DS wants to know when the cinema will have a singalong version please.

Newuser82 · 25/11/2022 20:06

Myself and my son can't wait to see this as we loved the theatre show. His favourite song was Telly though so he will be gutted 🙈

Comefromaway · 25/11/2022 20:24

I did NOT know that. Wait til I tell dd.

Comefromaway · 25/11/2022 20:28

Reading further when he wrote Matilda he didn’t know she was autistic. The same as we didn’t know about Dd when she used to sing the song. Just that it resonated.

TheTeddyBears · 25/11/2022 20:33

I'm glad I read as I was thinking of taking my girls but youngest is only about to turn 3. No way child she sit through 2hrs plus trailers. I'll leave it for now! Think my 5yr old wld like it though I'll tell her we can watch it on Netflix soon then lol 👍
