Went to see it today.

It was very good, but they have cut out a few of the songs from the stage musical and it's just a musical version of the 90s film.

It's also 2 hours long. Longer with all the trailers etc. it was good but it's coming to Netflix on Christmas Day so if there is no rush to see it in the cinema id save your money!

@Freshmind001 well many people have said they didn't like the 90s film because it turned an English story (it's set near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire) into an American set story.
The stage version I believe is set in England. Like the original book 🤣

I don't think I've seen the English version but myself and my kids love the 90's one lol

@Freshmind001 we are discussing the film which came out today - have you seen it?

I've seen it in theatre but not the 'movie' version.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2022 17:56

@Freshmind001 how did you see it a couple of months ago? It was only released today.

It was shown in some cinemas as part of the London Film Festival at the beginning of October.

Well perhaps Miss Trunchbull's brother married a black woman , and together they produced Miss Honey, not exactly rocket science. Also as any theatre goer will know it is not unusual to see The Von Trapp children played by a Chinese girl, an Indian boy, an African child a Caribbean child and whatever else. Just enjoy the story!

That’s exactly the casting in the film. To explain further would be a spoiler to those who don’t know the stage version.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2022 20:57

@Freshmind001 the 'English' version is the original book published several years before the American film. Have you actually ever read the book? It's very good.

CorporateBull · 25/11/2022 21:01

We’ve seen the stage show a couple of times and are going on Sunday to see the film. I love the energy of the live show so much (particularly as a PP said When I Grow Up) that I’m really curious to see how it feels on film.

Comefromaway · 25/11/2022 21:02

I’ve not seen the 90s film version. But I think the stage version captures the spirit of the book brilliantly.

No I haven't

clockapp · 25/11/2022 19:47

@Comefromaway that makes sense! Tim Minchin wrote the songs and lyrics etc and his daughter is autistic.

No the story hasn't changed it's just cut out a lot of the parent bits and condensed a little bit more. :)

I was about to say this! Nice to see another Minchin fan here. 😁

I was gutted when they announced it wasn't going to come to Netflix in the UK, especially grating given that the musical debuted here. Oh well. I will watch it when it finally gets to Netflix, but I'll be honest: I love Emma Thompson but in my heart of hearts I wish they'd kept Trunchball as being played by a male, as per the stage show.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2022 22:32

@Freshmind001 you should read the book. It's awesome. Probably my favourite Roald Dahl.

mackerella · 25/11/2022 22:38

We've just come back from seeing it. Haven't see

mackerella · 25/11/2022 22:41

Oh FFS, stupid MN site!

We've just come back from seeing it. We haven't seen the stage version but the DCs were familiar with several songs from school choir, etc. Everyone loved it, especially the big ensemble numbers like School Song and Revolting Children. It is long, though! (Luckily, DCs are older - 9 and 12 - so we went to a 7.30 showing, which wasn't too packed.)

APurpleSquirrel · 25/11/2022 18:58

No problem, it's really confusing & annoying. I'd seen the posters saying on Netflix on Christmas Day & assumed it meant everywhere too; but nope. Looks like Sony & Netflix have done some stupid exclusivity deal to have it in cinemas first & then not streaming until 6 months later! 🙄 But only in the UK & Ireland 🤦‍♀️

It’s not stupid - it’s literally the natural life cycle of a film. Watch it at the cinema or wait. There is little money to be made from putting a film straight on to streaming and it is usually a much better experience to watch it at the cinema anyway.

DS8 and I watched it today and both really enjoyed it.

funnycactus · 25/11/2022 22:43

I was going to take dd to see it this weekend but why is it 2 hours long?!

PizzaPizza56 · 25/11/2022 22:44

@mummabubs agreed but I totally understand why they changed the casting of Trunchbull from male to female!

More Minchin love over here.

We are legion.

Dd(8) and I went this evening. Really enjoyed it. Thought Lashana Lynch made a great Miss Honey - warm and nurturing, but vulnerable too. They cut out Pathetic from the stage version which I was glad about. It definitely wasn't a cut and paste of the book but it very much kept to the spirit and themes of it. I'd quite like to go again to a singalong screening. I do a great "When I Grow Up" 😃

Citygirlrurallife · 25/11/2022 23:06

@CatatonicLadybug i could have written your post word for word! I’ve adored the book since childhood and Tim Minchin has created something incredibly faithful to the book - I hate the 90’s American film.

we’ve seen it onstage about 4 times and I STILL cry whenever I hear “when I grow up” (especially as we took DD and her friends to see the film today on her birthday) although they missed a trick on the “Carry all the heavy things you have to haul around when you’re grown up” which I always think there’s a deeper meaning which makes me quite sad

i missed the brother and I missed Telly and I wasn’t into the new songs - especially the last one that didn’t really seem to fit. I also though Matthew Warchus showed his inexperience as a film director compared to his vast experience as a stage director - but on the whole we really enjoyed it and thought all the cast were fabulous

clockapp · 25/11/2022 23:40

@Citygirlrurallife 'when I grow up' still made me cry! I'm so pathetic 😂

Those who have seen this, what age is it suitable for? Is a 4 yo too young?

Needmorelego · 26/11/2022 11:14

@Ohmygoshposh it's rated PG.

Citygirlrurallife · 26/11/2022 15:36

@Ohmygoshposh i would have probably let DC1 at 4 watch it but he loved movies and would have sat still for 2 hours - DC2 not so much, she can barely watch a 2 hour film at the age of 11!

CatatonicLadybug · 26/11/2022 16:01

@Ohmygoshposh If your 4yo can do a full length non-animated movie in the cinema, you’re half way there. The other thing down to the kid is whether they are bothered by adults who are mean to children. Matilda’s parents are not nice to her and Trunchbull hates all children; possibly all humans. (My now 8yo was that age for Greatest Showman and loved it except for when the boy gets slapped at the beginning, which he thought was terrifying!)

and if your 4yo likes to repeat things, are you prepared to hear either ‘children are maggots’ or all of the songs? Could go either way!

Forever42 · 26/11/2022 21:39

Saw it with DDs (12 and 10) yesterday and really enjoyed it. Much better than the 90s film. We've seen the stage show and the DC know the songs pretty well so that might add to the enjoyment. The big song and dance numbers are done very well.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/11/2022 22:06

We're just back from watching it, my 16yo dd loved it as did my 8yo niece.

I thought it was great, Emma Thompson made for a terrifying trunchbull. The girl that played Matilda was outstanding, I thought the whole cast were fab actually.

I'm surprised to see negativity towards it tbh, it's a great family film and the fact it has a very English feel to it is definitely more authentic to the book.
