Matilda the musical

Went to see it today.

It was very good, but they have cut out a few of the songs from the stage musical and it's just a musical version of the 90s film.

It's also 2 hours long. Longer with all the trailers etc. it was good but it's coming to Netflix on Christmas Day so if there is no rush to see it in the cinema id save your money!

@SocksAndTheCity

With a vpn you can watch on Netflix. My dd is keen on k-dramas and they were not available here for a long time and she set the Netflix up to watch them from somewhere else, don't ask me how! That said, I might go to the cinema, I saw the original Stratford run of Matilda and I'm interested in how it changed, I know they reworked it for the west end run

SunflowerSmith · 05/12/2022 20:03

I went to see it yesterday with dd's aged 7 and 9, I thought it was just OK, I love musicals but it was a bit dull in places and did go on a bit, the 7 year old got bored but the 9 year old enjoyed it.

I saw this recently and loved it. Yes we can see it on Netflix’s but it’s nice to watch on the big screen. Emma Thompson was brilliant ax were all the cast.

FunctionalSkills · 12/12/2022 01:16

We saw it the other dat and the kids loved it. I'm not a massive dahl fan for various reasons...

But what I want to know is how did they make Emma Thompsons teeth so convincingly awful?

SinnerBoy · 13/12/2022 17:36

I'm glad I read this, I've just booked tickets for my DD and her pal tomorrow. And me.... I like the film, but I really hate musicals!

Cherryana · 13/12/2022 18:18

I thought it was a bit long.
Fab songs.
Fab choreography.
I liked the stage school shine it had…

Okay, I found the casting of Miss Honey, needed an adjustment in my head - I guess because I always saw her as a blonde white woman.

And then I thought of all those little kids in the film singing and my advice to them all would be go for it, follow your dreams, don’t let someone else limit you…and then I thought it was me that needed to adjust!! So I did.

And the actress who plays Miss Honey is absolutely brilliant.

I loved the casting of the play - they were all fab.

SinnerBoy · 14/12/2022 18:28

I've just come back from watching it, they liked it but said the film was better. DD pointed out some omissions, including the 13 times something sum.

I liked the scenery and didn't think Emma T was as scary as the film one!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 19/12/2022 01:33

Saw it today.

Absolutely loved it.

Was worried it would fall flat as the stage show relies on really, really clever stage tricks that keep you consumed. But it was a visual treat and I think Emma Thompson was especially excellent.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 19/12/2022 01:33

Also please they cut the boring songs out of the film version. The stage show was good but really dragged in parts.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/12/2022 01:38

We loved it but we've never seen the stage show, and DS has never seen the original. He did find it a bit heavy when she had them all in the hall, but he's 7 and it doesn't really scare him because of course the table turn quite quickly

KingscoteStaff · 19/12/2022 06:28

Wonderful film. I wondered if the vibe would change with a female Trunchball, but ET was fantastic. Gutted they cut ‘Telly’ - we had to listen to it once we got home to make up for it!

LemonDrizzles · 19/12/2022 06:29

APurpleSquirrel · 25/11/2022 18:48

It won't be on Netflix on Christmas Day - not in the Uk or Ireland unfortunately. Everywhere else in the world, yes - but not here. According to Netflix & Sony (the distributor) it won't be on UK Netflix till next summer - so if you or kids do want to see it, you will need to see it in the cinema unfortunately.

Ooh how unusual. Netflix used to include us in worldwide releases...

Miss Trunchbull was always female, surely?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/12/2022 07:31

In the stage show Miss Trunchbull is played by a man.

I think it's because in a film you can use camera angles etc to make her look bigger and more imposing, but on the stage you need to get the size difference. You can't have actual five year olds as Matilda, so you make the Trunchbull bigger instead.

@Marnie76
this little girl,
Telly
And loud I think are the ones cut. Might be another one but not sure.

I think the best think is to ignore the racist poster

Noooo.

I love "Telly". But it makes sense to drop it in a film with no interval.

We saw the musical on stage about 4 years ago. The dc were 10 and 7. We then had to listen to the soundtrack everywhere we went for about a year!

So far we havn't had a free weekend to get to the cinema to see it - maybe this week.

I haaaaated the Danny De Vito film of Matilda. Just awful.

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2022 07:54

Ah, I saw the film musical, not the stage production; I hadn't realised.

SuperGinger · 22/12/2022 18:03

I saw it today, goodness it went on a bit and lacked nuance. It was a bit pantomime and OTT the book was far more psychologically dark. Nothing has ever come close to the audio book narrated by Kate Winslet. My DC thought this too

mamatoTails · 31/12/2022 20:18

Watching it on Netflix now (live in Spain) it's dire. Kids were bored and disappeared early on. I think the children in it are just too un relatable, too stage school.
Disappointed and doubt we will watch it again.

iRun2eatCake · 03/01/2023 20:39

Saw the stage show few months back.

Unfortunately l didn't find the "Matilda" actress very believable. She had a very deep voice - so deep that we thought it was a boy - and she was completely expressionless.

Was disappointed by it and wouldn't go again

MeghanThyStallion · 06/01/2023 11:31

We took the DC to see it at the cinema this week. The DC (10 and 12) loved it. DH and I thought it was very bleak and didn't like it much. Emma Thompson was good, and Matilda's mum. I wanted Miss Honey to have a bit more grit TBH.

CrossPurposes · 12/01/2023 17:07

CrossPurposes · 12/01/2023 17:07

Yes interesting! I found the ear pulling really gruesome. Overall I enjoyed it but my kids are not that young, I am not sure they would have enjoyed it at 7 or 8.

I enjoyed the songs and choreography.

I also do like ET.

Meredusoleil · 18/02/2023 07:13

Went to see it with my 11 and 14 yo. We all loved it. Songs brilliant. Matilda's mum not great though. Noticed no older brother in this remake.

Just as good as the West End musical version imho and will definitely watch it again!
