Matilda the musical

Went to see it today.

It was very good, but they have cut out a few of the songs from the stage musical and it's just a musical version of the 90s film.

It's also 2 hours long. Longer with all the trailers etc. it was good but it's coming to Netflix on Christmas Day so if there is no rush to see it in the cinema id save your money!

It was shown in some cinemas as part of the London Film Festival at the beginning of October.

It was the opening film at the London Film Festival - I saw it the following day at a lunchtime screening full of local schoolchildren and everybody had a great time!

I'd looked forward to watching it again on Netflix on Christmas Day, so the news that it's going to be available to stream everywhere except here has royally pissed me off.

@Freshmind001 how did you see it a couple of months ago? It was only released today.

It was opening film at London Film Festival back in October, maybe they saw it there?

CorporateBull · 27/11/2022 17:33

We saw it today and I thought it was fantastic. Emma Thompson is tremendous, as is Matilda herself. I was concerned at how it would feel to lose the energy from the live performance but the opportunity to really flesh out the acrobat and the escapologist, and the brilliantly staged big numbers made up for it.

I think it’s definitely worth seeing in the cinema if you can as some of it is really made for the big screen.

Needmorelego · 27/11/2022 19:08

Just saw it. Loved it. Really really good.

MirandaWest · 27/11/2022 19:26

My DD and I are going to see it on Tuesday evening - both looking forward to it. She’s 17 and we both know the musical very well 😊

“When I grow up” is beautiful

CorporateBull · 27/11/2022 19:33

I sobbed through When I Grow Up. Actually I sobbed quite a lot.

KatnissNeverdone · 27/11/2022 19:40

When I grow up killed me. I'd never heard Quiet before and sobbed my way through that too. I'm sooooooo embarrassing. DD(9) was disgusted "It's not even sad". I liked it so much I came home and booked tickets for February in Liverpool.

CorporateBull · 27/11/2022 19:41

I totally saw what other posters said about Quiet and autism. Although I think it applies to ADHD too.

Needmorelego · 27/11/2022 20:46

@CorporateBull my daughter cried and clung to my arm during 'when I grow up' (she's 14).
I almost lost it with all the cute babies at the beginning.

Saw it today with 10yo DD - it's brilliant! We haven't seen the "live" musical, so this was very fresh. It really is chalk and cheese compared with the Danny DeVito vehicle from the 1990s. I was a bit meh on hearing about Emma Thompson, but in fact her steampunk-y Cruchbull is fantastic. It's pretty dark in places too, and the scenes with Matilda's parents are mercifully short.

Like almost everyone else it seems, I hadn't caught the detail of this not being on Netflix in the UK until next summer - will just have to go to the cinema at least once more in that case :)

Waawo · 27/11/2022 21:26

Trunchbull of course - curse you Mumsnet and your lack of an edit facility!

MirandaWest · 30/11/2022 07:04

DD and I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. We both felt it was just the right length and had exactly the right feel to it. I was wondering what Emma Thompson would be like but felt she was just right too

We saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Loved taking my ds to see the stageshow a few years ago, and he actually cried at the end, he found it so moving.

Madamecastafiore · 01/12/2022 08:13

I've seen the stage show numerous times, the Danny de Vito version about 2 trillion times as both DDs loved it and absolutely loved the new film as did my adult DS and DH. A lovely afternoon out for the family.

I think caution should be used for younger children as there are some parts that my sensitive 9-year-old found too scary. Adults shouting at children and physical threat.

PhDmum22 · 01/12/2022 08:54

Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 review here. Saw it in Oct as part of the Film Festival and loved it.
Also cried (more than once), also spoke to me about ASD.
Highly recommended if you like the book. Haven't seen the stage show (£££££!) but is on the list.

Having said that, it is excellent and I enjoyed almost as much as I did the stage play (which I have seen 10 times).

Yes! The only show we’ve been to with a full house standing ovation at the end, SO we’ll deserved!

sailingsunshine · 03/12/2022 22:08

I've seen it this evening, fabulous, I loved it. Excellent cast, the girl who plays Lavender was in Belfast, I felt I recognised her.

Thereisnolight · 04/12/2022 10:19

Just saw this yesterday. Emma Thompson’s Miss Trunchbull was fantastic - is that really her singing?

CookPassBabtridge · 04/12/2022 10:57

Loved it!! Couldn't take my eyes off the screen once.

CookPassBabtridge · 04/12/2022 11:03

And ET is a fantastic Trunchbull.

skyeisthelimit · 04/12/2022 11:05

I thought it started a bit over the top, but it grew on me as I watched it.

DD is 14 and she loved it, and has played the songs on a loop ever since . We will go and see the stage version if it tours near us at any point.

applespearsbears · 04/12/2022 11:09

Watched this with two tweens and we all found it a bit of a downer and don't understand why it's been released at Christmas. There's not enough humour to balance the relentless misery! Would not recommend particularly
