Just that really?

A film that you've watched that has stayed with you and why?
Doesn't have to be a film you've ever watched again...

But recommendations welcome!

Finest Hour Set early in the last war a little group are tasked with making a propaganda film but as things aren:t going too well, they have to adjust the film to stiffen morale even more. There's a little romance and war tension and a hilarious performance from Bill Night. Charming film.

Brazil. Mesmerising.

A Few Good Men. Love it.

Galaxy Quest. So funny.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 30/08/2022 00:51

Atonement. Totally took my by surprise the first time I watched it and is still excellent on rewatching.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 30/08/2022 00:52

Sophie's Choice. Unbearable.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 30/08/2022 00:52

Also 500 Days of Summer. I’m a bit of an Eeyore, so the doomed relationship playing out in past and present appeals to me!

Bananarama21 · 30/08/2022 01:01

The notebook, the book thief, schildners list, the boy in the stripped pyjamas, the secret garden, the little princess

Graphista · 01/09/2022 00:35

American history x

Only watched it once, tough watching but I think everyone should see it once

Blogdog · 01/09/2022 00:43

Mother! Was not prepared for that at all, especially the scene with the baby. I read the director intended it as a metaphor for how humans mistreat earth, which I can see when I think back on it, but it was so disturbing.

Also Midsommar - a wild ride with lots of deeply unsettling scenes.

God's Own Country

City of Joy with Patrick Swayze. Wonderful... I must watch it again

Some brilliant choices here but for me

Apollo 13 ( The Ron Howard film) I have seen the NASA control room & it looks like something out of a Thunderbirds set & I do believe they had less computing power than is in a modern mobile phone.

But they lost those men in space and they got them back with slide rules and making a oxygen thing with socks and cardboard.

Sometimes humans can be unbelievable.
DS & I have watched this a number of times and always enjoy it

(Nothing to do with me thinking Gary Sinese is a very attractive actor - Oh dear me no - not at all ) 😊

I agree with midsommar really effective. I have tried and failed to watch mother and Brazil a few times, just don't stick in my brain. Men was a pretty bizarre watch lately, will have to give it another go, but I provisionally liked it.

Breaking the waves, antichrist, melancholia (basically Lars von tries) ooft. Naked by Mike leigh.

Featuredcreature · 01/09/2022 01:32

Tyrannosaur and precious, holy fuck.

avamiah · 01/09/2022 01:42

I recently watched a film called Lullaby ( 2019) it’s French with English subtitles and based on a actual events ( true story) and it was on iplayer here in the Uk and I think it’s still on.

It made me think twice about the people who we bring into our Lives.

This is a must watch

NiceTwin · 01/09/2022 01:57

Sometimes a great notion.

I watched it 40 years ago and I can still remember the heart breaking death scene.

Dreikanter · 01/09/2022 02:52

The Pianist. Watched it with DS for his school project. Hated every grim moment of it.

Midnight Express. Drugs are bad but prison is badder.

Some Like It Hot. Always makes me laugh (“well nobody’s perfect”).

Agree with atonement. Brilliant but so tragic

A very long engagement

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (my fave film ever)

Schindlers list (for all the wrong reasons )

Memento

Shutter island

Hostel (don't watch . Horrific)

Moulin rouge .

OnlyEverAutumn · 01/09/2022 03:04

Ordinary People - watched it many years ago and the grief of the boy over losing his brother still haunts me 😢

Astupidpose · 01/09/2022 03:21

Grave of the Fireflies
Anime film about two children in Japan in WW2. Beautiful and haunting.

Young@Heart documentary film about a senior citizen choir. Lovely. Tears but also fun.

stillvicarinatutu · 01/09/2022 03:27

Oh I isn't quite why did I .....
So atonement- just a tragic bit brilliant story (I read the book first)
It's a love story but goes tragically wrong due to a young girls lie it's very very sad

A very long engagement- French film - subtitles- but just a really uplifting love story set during the war - it's lovely

Eternal sunshine- an incredibly clever Quirky love story - it's absolutely lovely. And I love that Jim carey plays a really serious shy character in it - very unlike his usual roles but he's fab in this

Memento- clever - film goes backwards. Nuff said

Shutter island - massive twist t end

Hostel - horrid . Do t watch disturbed me

Moulin rouge - absolutely brill. Never liked musicals but baz lurman is brill as a director- it's just a fab fab film . Get your tissues ready tho

And actually talking about baz Lurman - strictly ballroom - just a fabulous feel good film that has you punching the air at the end ! Lovely !

Schindler's list - can't watch again . Depicts the Nazi atrocities during world war 2 and how one man saved hundreds of Jewish children. Brilliant but harrowing.

Astupidpose · 01/09/2022 03:37

The last couple of films I watched with Frances Dorman - Nomadland and the three billboards one - I wanted to watch again as soon as they finished.

Especially Nomadland. I found myself on the internet looking up the people who appeared and I want to go on an American road trip.

Frances Dorman was fantastic in it.

That is one of my favorite films of all time.

The storyline was so matter-of-fact but the performances of all the actors were superb.

I am surprised that Donald Sutherland did not receive an Oscar for his performance (Timothy Hutton received one for "Best Supporting Actor", he was 20-years-old).

Brilliant, brilliant film.

Riverlee · 01/09/2022 04:44

Mandy - old black and white film about a deaf girl

Sister Kenny - about a nurse who cured childhood paralysis

JFK - found it fascinating (although since learnt the film isn’t totally accurate)

The Truman Show - superb film

BasiliskStare · 01/09/2022 04:50

Oh sorry if been mentioned - but does anyone remember the Boy with the Green Hair ?
