Just that really?

A film that you've watched that has stayed with you and why?
Doesn't have to be a film you've ever watched again...

But recommendations welcome!

Delicatessen-is a surreal black comedy parts of which, like the rhythmical bed bouncing, make me cry with laughter

Everest. Prior to watching it I didn't know what had happened in that particular bad year on Everest, and nor did I have much idea of the mountain's grim history. I was not prepared for pretty much everyone in the film to die!

Agree with ‘Eternal Sunshine…’ watched it aeons ago but still remember how much I loved it. Must watch again and get the teenagers to watch it with me.

Shutter Island is brilliant but has a particular scene (at the lake) which haunted me for a long time (didn’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet).

I don’t watch many films and have a very short attention span so have to be quite gripped by something to keep watching. Parasite is one film that certainly kept me focused. Incredible film. So original. Have never seen anything like it before or since.

I agree with midsommar really effective. I have tried and failed to watch mother and Brazil a few times, just don't stick in my brain. Men was a pretty bizarre watch lately, will have to give it another go, but I provisionally liked it.

Breaking the waves, antichrist, melancholia (basically Lars von tries) ooft. Naked by Mike leigh.

I found "Men" really disturbing, and I found it much more scary than my male partner did. It made me realise what a different viewing experience we had depending on our experiences.

For example, she is being stalked by a naked man who suddenly appears outside her window. I asked my partner if he found it frightening - he said no, I've seen naked men before . . .
(he's a nurse btw!)

It was a find for me too.

Doodledeedum · 01/09/2022 14:21

Wow thanks all! So many to explore

I'd appreciate warnings for the harrowing ones though!

Just watched a New film on Netflix called “I Came By “ it’s a British film and it’s a must watch as in my opinion it’s very realistic and I actually felt slightly stressed out when watching it but then my friend said “it’s not real it’s a film” get a grip. 🫣lol

But I actually think the film in my opinion is realistic and very frightening as who is going to believe a “nobody, “a person with drug convictions against a High Court Judge ??

Splice.

Not for good reasons. One to avoid!

Sausagedognamedmash · 03/09/2022 06:10

Sound of Metal, absolutely phenomenal film. The story telling and score is absolutely beautiful. The film made me feel things I film hasn't in a long time. Really recommend watching it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/09/2022 06:21

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind - interesting story
Sixth Sense - first time i watched it i watched it again immediately afterwards!
Truman Show - another interesting story

IceStationZebra · 03/09/2022 06:23

Breaking the Waves, I watched it on a bleak wet Sunday afternoon about 20 years ago and it has stayed with me ever since! Thoroughly depressing.

Jungle - man is lost in Amazon jungle alone for 3 weeks

1917 - true story of director Sam Mendes' grandfather in WW1, he filmed it in a way that made it looked like the whole film was taken in a single shot

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 - intense!

Bird Box - thriller

No Time To Die - female roles are great

White Chicks - so funny

NoHeavenNoMore · 03/09/2022 06:25

Lion ❤️❤️ superb

Also -
Parasite!

RitzyTitzy · 03/09/2022 06:35

Nil by mouth. I come from a family of alcoholism and abuse and my mum was constantly ashamed that she was in that marriage and couldn't get out. I felt like it handled the complexity of women staying with abusers beautifully, and the strength of these women and the women who surround them was palpable. Absolutely horrific but equally mesmerising. Outstanding acting all round.

CODA (available on Apple TV) - beyond doubt my favourite film ever, exceptionally well written, hilariously funny and brought me to tears. It also won the best picture Oscar 2022 but thanks to Will Smith it didn't get the publicity it deserves.

Worth an Apple TV 1 month subscription for CODA alone but you can also binge Ted Lasso while you're there!

Riverlee · 03/09/2022 06:52

CODA is a lovely film.

Hawkins001 · 03/09/2022 06:56

The film hackers and film mindhunters with Val Kilmer.
one is the risks of high tech equipment, and the other is the darker psychological side of humanity.

How to make an American Quilt

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 03/09/2022 07:03

The Descent. It's a full on horror film which obviously won't appeal to all, but so well made and effective with a brilliant ending.

grayhairdontcare · 03/09/2022 07:18

Hidden figures
The colour purple
Mississippi Burning

All really good films .

CJsGoldfish · 03/09/2022 07:19

The Intouchables (French)
Mother and Child
Philadelphia

cocktailclub · 03/09/2022 07:23

Titanic. All the water sloshing around in the corridors.
I can't watch any films about Nazi atrocities.
